The 70s Stuff is really the best. RUSH was so hated by early Punks partially because they sold out hard trying to stay trendy and really completely lost the sincerity of the early records.

Legend has it that, with the exception of Alex's solo beginning at 9:25, "Xanadu" was recorded in one take as if recorded live-- which, for a studio recording, is the equivalent of getting a hole-in-one in golf. And when you consider there are parts where Geddy is playing the synthesizer (MOOG Taurus synth pedals) with his feet WHILE playing bass AND singing ( 5:00 - 5:14 ), and Alex is switching back and forth from six-string to twelve-string and playing the occasional Taurus pedal synth note with his feet, too--it's all the more mind-blowing this was recorded in a single take.

What I take from this song is that even if you get what you want, you may regret it in the future. Like, seriously, the character in this lyrical story read an old book that told him about a paradise where he could be immortal, so the dude went and found it. At first he was all happy go lucky but then after a thousand years he thinks the place is like a prison and has gone mad! That is some deep stuff dude.

Had back surgery this summer. I am recovering well and will resume teaching in the fall. After binge watching Marco Polo on Netflix, this song holds more meaning than it used to. British poet Samuel Coleridge's opium induced dreams was the inspiration for this song: " In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree. Where Alph the sacred river ran through caverns measureless to man, down to a sunless sea. With twice five miles of fertile ground, with towers girded all around... etc Any scholar knows the rest. Xanadu is an English bastardization of Xiang-thu, the Chinese/Mongolian city where Kublai Khan prefered to spend his summers. It was known for many centuries as "The Forbidden City" because no foreigner was allowed within its walls on pain of death. It was considered holy. Consecrated to the gods and ancestors of the great Kublai. Only in recent decades were foreigners allowed to visit Xiang-thu.

Geddy's voice was at its very best in this vocal performance. I was familiar with Coleridge's unfinished masterpiece the first time I heard the song, and I loved what Rush did with it. The "ancient book" is called the Book of Enoch. And its story predates the Bible by thousands of years. It tells of immortals imprisoned until end-times. There are only two places on earth where stars are "stopped in the sky" and only one of those is on land. And there, they are definitely "praying for the light," and with "caves of ice." Immortals who came from a place of unmatched music and brought great technologies with them. A place called "Paradise." Unfortunately, the immortals are condemned and are not to be trifled with. Coleridge may have trifled, bringing back great poetry, but at what cost? Paradise lost.
@tomnoyb83015 жыл бұрын
In paradise angels each play individual and distinct music such that the notes carry one along like crowd surfing. Any one musician could hold you up, but they all contribute, often in a passing-off fashion. Each angel's music stands on its own and they compliment each other, not in harmony, not like a symphony, but like Rush. Better than Rush, but Rush is most like heaven's music, because each musician's song nearly stands on its own with each musician's distinct tale told distinctly.
@immortaloshun4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. I recently started reading the Book of Enoch. It's interesting that the Ethiopians consider this book to be sacred and it has remained in their Bible in a more pure form than other religions that tried to hide or dispute it. Let he who has ears hear.
