Music critics of the day called Rush, “too loud, too long.” Most radio stations didn’t, or couldn’t play their songs. It didn’t stop people from buying the albums or going to their shows. I’m pretty sure those critics never thought Rush would last ten years, let alone over 40. Just goes to show, pay no attention to your critics.

I dont care what the critics think....This is a fine album. Unique and original. Especially for its time.
@zachjohnson63710 жыл бұрын
What's "especially for its time" supposed to mean? The most unique and original rock music was made during this time.
@Greyswyndir9 жыл бұрын
Zach Johnson This was just way different then everything else at the time. Rush took the fork in the road no one else had traveled before.
@zachjohnson6379 жыл бұрын
Greyswyndir I love Rush to death, but it wasn't really entirely different from everything else. There were many other progressive rock groups making similar forms of music at the time, although each had their own unique sound of course.
@Greyswyndir9 жыл бұрын
Zach Johnson Well, I didn't mean so different as to be unrecognizable from everything else, just very different from the pop scene of the time. Unfortunately Rush has really gone downhill in the past 25 years. I find their most recent albums to all sound the same (production-wise). I get ear fatigue almost as soon as I start listening to it. I'm a big fan of the work they did in the 70's and eighties, after that I stopped listening (though I didn't mind Roll the Bones or Presto, everything after that is just a challenge to listen to for me). I'd like to see Rick Rubin or another good producer lead them back to some of their earlier styles. I know Rush doesn't like covering the same ground (so they say) but all of the newer material just seems so thin and lifeless that I cannot get into it. The past five or six albums sound the same to me.
@zachjohnson6379 жыл бұрын
Yeah the production is bad...Very brickwalled and 'loud'. But as far as the quality of the music itself is concerned, I think Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows, and Clockwork Angels are great.

8:38 until the end may be my favorite movement in music I have ever heard. I love listening to Caress of Steel not only for the memories but also because you know you are probably one of about 7 people in all the world listening to it. Caress of Steel is an exclusive Rush club.

When I was a junior in high school in 1983, in our English class our assignment was to tell an American legend. Most of us told stories about Paul Bunyan, John Henry, etc., but one crazy guy got up there and told the story about three travelers from Willowdale and the Necromancer. In the end, they defeated the Necromancer by recording "Caress of Steel". The look of horror on the teacher's face lasted about a second when she realized that it wouldn't do any good.

Back in 1978, I bought my very first album and it was "All the a World's a Stage". I loved it so much that I ran out and bought "Caress of Steel." I have been a die-hard faithful follower of this extremely talented band since that day. There is not a day that goes by that I don't hear some rush, especially when i'm walking my dog Gus. All he wants to do is sniff everything, and listening to rush helps keep my sanity 😂

Im 75 years old & watched the birth of Jazz Rock fusion that is Rush become mainstream rock,is there any better guitar solo in any genre of music ? I think not ,the sheer complexity of the tones Alex uses in this piece make it a nightmare for even the most accomplished guitarist to pull off in 1 shot sitting in a pratice chair let alone live,some comments were left that claimed this album was " underrated " when it came out but that's not what i recall,i recall Rolling Stone magazine raving about the levels & depth of composition while all the Rock radio stations in Detroit played the entire song on heavy rotation because the DJ's couldnt bring themselves to edit a masterpiece like they did to Yes Roundabout.
