EPIRB for anyone who doesn't know- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. It has a hydrostatic release gear that gets activated when the boat/ship reaches a certain depth in the water. The gear comes loose and the EPIRB floats to the top and starts broadcasting signals that contains a unique identification number of that particular vessel

I assumed it was some kind of signal but thanks for the explanation. It helped me to understand that a person didn’t actually send a mayday signal. It kind of seems like somehow the boat went down really fast and the people didn’t have time to send a mayday signal.
@holyghost231
@holyghost231 3 ай бұрын
@@caseyj779 yeah. It most likely was a giant rogue wave which hit them on the side and capsized the boat. A Mayday signal is sent with the push of a single button on the VHF radio. It must have been a violent impact and even a veteran captain couldn't get the mayday out.

Sorry for your loss. Prayer covering for these men is important imo. I come from a long line of fishermen. My great-great-great-grandfather Collins was almost lost when his ship went down off Newfoundland, he managed to get into a dory and row himself and a few survivors to shore. It was considered a feat of strength. Unfortunately, it tore his body apart and he died within 2 years. The men who go down to the sea in ships.

@@e.s.5529if I remember correctly in this particular instance they were overloaded. There are several other reasons such as a rouge wave, too much ice on the boat and a slack tank, all of those can cause a boat to sink with little to no warning.

@@e.s.5529 i just read the coast guards press release which was that they went out overloaded in freezing spray with ice build up and the crew was fatigued. They also believe a hatch was left open stating that would cause the ship to sink within minutes. The families seem to think captain and crew were pressured by the owner to leave the dock early unprepared and wanted criminal charges brought up which was never done. This is just what I read in a news report after googling it so take that for what you will.

Everything I see this rerun during the Deadliest Catch it still hits me. Watching Sig go through his tidal wave of emotions starts my eyes watering every single time. The last thing the Coast Guard ever wants to report is those words," No Joy Found". Just a half inch of ice on a Crab Boat adds several tons and fully loaded with Pots makes the boat very top heavy. No one will ever know exactly what happened but thankfully it added more safety measures to each boat, captain and crew. Now every 2 years instead of 5 to 7 every boat has to go through the maximum allowable weight tests. I remember Sig and the Northwestern going through that test shortly after the incident and Sig suddenly realizing he was like 10 tons overweight because the new pots each weighed 1 to 2 thousand pounds more then the older pots they replaced. I've watched that show since season 1 and even watched Mike Row on his Dirtiest Jobs show working as a Greenhorn on crab boars. Huge Respect for the Grabbers and the Coast Guard who no matter the weather go out to rescue and help those out in the Bering Sea. RIP to everyone who's been lost, prayers to those families and prayers that each season those who go out fishing that they all return

They're first responders of the highest order. You HAVE to maintain that mentality, otherwise you'll start spiraling. Firefighting is scary, but we've made a lot of advances in fire safety. The ocean, though... it's only getting worse and worse as the years go by. Rogue waves are EVERYWHERE. And the Coast Guard deals with drownings and lost at sea cases all the time. With the possible exception of an aircraft carrier, I don't know a single kind of ship that can handle rogue waves. Most of the cases they're called out to help with will result in no retrievals.

Retired USCG, stationed in Kodiak, AK 1988-1990, one spring we lost one boat a week for a few weeks. I really is the DEADLIEST Catch. I went out on many searches and came home with no good news for the families.

4.5 hours of fuel, 2 hours to get to target. Leaves 30 min to search before needing to head back. Damn.

There is a LZ on St George if they have to they can stay on scene longer, I think during the meet and greet the Coast Guard Media folks said it is there for emergency’s and not staffed. Other than that I’ve never heard it mentioned in the Navy but it has been used once? That I could find so have no idea what the status is of it. Not listed on a couple of maps I checked so I dunno

Wish they had kept the HH-3J Pelicans for the long legged missions. 30 minutes for a search? That almost sounds like a disservice, giving professional Search and Rescue personnel things that seem little more than a token effort.

I was ATC 10 years in Alaska. My last 39 months were in Cold Bay, AK where Coast Guard regularly bases a Jayhawk rescue helicopter. I had one of the least physical jobs out there, more mental work and ATC radio work. I was chilled every time Coast Guard called up as "Coast Guard Rescue ####." Even the air taxi pilots kept eyes and ears out for fellow pilots and ship crews. A few air taxi planes have marine radios by choice of the owners, in case they need to assist in a search. There's lots of dangerous jobs and the Coast Guard is standing by for any help they can give.

They were improperly loaded, the crew was fatigued, and the captain set forth into freezing spray despite knowing these things. A hatch was left open, and the crew was so fatigued that they couldn't keep up with ice buildup. It capsized quickly. The captain was unfortunately complicit a string of missteps.

@@delewan she had to be listing bad before the sinking but no mayday no nothing but somebody had time to tie the epirb to a rope im thinking they were in the water when that happened thinking the coast guard would be able to see the bright yellow rope better so they would find them

You don’t ever want to hear “last known position” when talking about a boat (or a plane for that matter) that’s essentially saying without saying “they’re dead.”

The Coast Guard has been involved in many combat missions in wars. Douglas Munro was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions on Guadalcanal during WW2 while piloting a Higgins boat. His actions saved many lives but sadly cost him his. His last words were regarding the safety of the men in his charge.
