Don't forget that Mariupol was completely encircled at the start of the Russian intervention. In 2015, Debaltsevo was encircled but the General in charge of that debacle was Syrsky. As we know, Syrsky has a problem admitting he is being encircled until it is too late to order a retreat.

You made reference to 6,000 Ukrainians being encircled somewhere only a few days ago. So, Ukraine is used to being encircled and loosing thousands of its soldiers. Syrssky should never ever have been given a task he has always failed to execute.

The Russians have improved significantly in their battle shaping ability. Their use of flanking and cauldron forming maneuvers has improved significantly since the beginning of their "special military operation" (SMO) in Ukraine. With Syrsky hating to use the word "retreat" with his troops, this makes matters worse for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
