Itachi .... . One of the best characters in all of anime history . ( like him , hate him , you can't deny that at all ) . You know , dark characters like Lelouch or Itachi or Askelladd , are the most complicated and best writtens ever . Itachi , wasn't a hero at all . He did wrong . He killed so many that night . But can you imagine how many he saved ? How many bodies would've been piled if he didn't prevent a whole world war ? He himself knows he did wrong and wanted punishment and death by sasuke's hands . He is a sacrificer . As his father said , itachi's pain was far more than them .. . Did you pay attention that he smiled only once before his death . That was the time he intrusted shisui's eye to naruto before his fight with sasuke , because he understood that naruto could do what he and shisui died for . He always saw himself as a failure ( as he said to sasuke during their farewell ) and even in his final fight with kabuto , tried to give him another chance of a better life , because he saw himself in kabuto .... . Itachi mirrors the journey of humanity. Always striving for world peace, and leaving a trail of bodies only. This is why humans resonate with these tortured dark characters. Because they see a part of their own lives in them, and if they can figure out the character, perhaps they can figure out themselves and their challenges as well. Itachi against his parents, idealism vs pragmatism, is that not akin to the US Boomer vs new Gen conflicts?

I'm sure there are other anime that convey loneliness, grief, and sadness amidst war in their own way, but Naruto has presented so many characters that you can't help but shed tears at each of their stories. Itachi's role in Akatsuki made no sense. When leaving the village, he told Sarutobi that he will infiltrate them as a spy to gather intel, and this way continue keeping the village safe. He didnt hovewer send any message to Konoha about Akatsuki or their plans. Even a few sheets of Akatsuki members descriptions Shikamaru was reading over didnt come from him. Staying in such an organization and actively helping the Endless Tsukiyomi plan was a madness, but Itachi did that. Not only that; when Akatsuki were trying to get the authority and popularity, they were basically asassins on hire, and Itachi was killing a lot of innocent people to stay inside an organization where he shouldnt have been in the first place. It achieved no goal at all. Except for scaring Danzo, maybe? But i think he didnt need to be with them to be a threat to Danzo, just be somewhere and stay alive is enough. Also, mentally torturing Kakashi by placing him in Tsukiyomi and repeatedly stabbing him inside his mind for thousands of times was just outright cruel. There's simply no justification of that. What did he need it for? He could put Kakashi into sleep, or just trap there in Tsukiyomi until the end of the fight, what was the extra effort for? To show he is a threat? He was already seen as such. No matter how easy he'd go on Kakashi, there are tons of reasons why he, by others opinion, could do so: maybe out of respect for another sharingan wielder, maybe because he wanted to fight him some other time, maybe because he didnt even consider Kakashi worthy of his attention. Noone would think its because he isnt really a villain, no covers blown. But doing such a move that he almost broke Kakashi mentally? Absolutely no reason to do so. I'm not arguing with the rest of his image, but he definitely is no saint.
