@@blackeyedsusan727 -- You've got to admit most of the zealots trying to overthrow our government are very religious. Well, at least they claim they are, but it normally turns out to be a lie and a cover story for their own crimes and "sins". I'm pretty sure that all of the evangelical churches wholeheartedly supported Trump's campaign, while at the same time calling him a useful sinner to further their god's laws. Religion is most definitely a problem nowadays, because religious nutjobs refuse to keep it out of politics in order to "Advance God's Laws on Earth". How is that anything other than very bad news?

Wasting food is absolutely insane. I grew up in a small village here in Finland and as long as I can remember we grew all of our potatoes ourselves. The ones we didn't eat, we kept in the cellar so we could put them back in the field in spring time to grow our potatoes for the next year. We also grew our own strawberries, herbs, peas and much more. But what I really love about Finland, is that we all have something called Jokamiehenoikeus, which means everyone's right. That means anyone can go to any forest to pick berries, mushrooms or even start a small fire if needed for survival. We used to pick our freezers full of berries from random forests, and thankfully we did. It's amazing how little people today know about where their food comes from. When I was a kid, we were told not to eat berries from the side of the road, but we did it anyway, and nobody died from it. You just had to know what was poisonous and what wasn't. :D

I've got blackberries growing in my garden recently I was picking some and putting the in a bowl and my next door neighbours kid asked what i was going to do with them I told him that i was going to make a pie ; i thought he was going to throw up. He couldn't believe that I would eat something that grows on a bush. I asked him where he thought fruit and veg came from "Tesco's" he said looking at me like I was crazy not knowing that. It worries me that this is the generation protesting about global warming they recently held a demonstration locally and nearly every one who turned up was clutching a single use coffee cup and a sandwich in a polystyrene cellophane wrapped tray containing a sandwich or a piece of fruit. Throughout the day vans were turning up from takeaways within a few minutes walking distance. When they left they left a mountain of plastic water bottles and takeaway cartons. This is the future?

+Matt Sweeney I think it's more embarrassing if you're too lazy to spell "through" and you're still listening to Smash Mouth in the 2010's. America is in dire straits. Every nation is. And yeah, I hate that the USA appears to be arming itself for a big war that could be avoided, but there are a lot of countries that are doing the same. At least the USA doesn't have a Queen at the helm. We were smart enough to avoid aristocracy, which is inherently anti-democratic, colonialist and plutocratic. So there's that. Plus, we actually address issues in our country, not like, say, Germany or Japan, where rape is practically legal, because the government thinks that if it ignores the issue and closes its eyes to it, it will cease to exist.

If I may address the most serious issue mentioned in this episode: the main reason why fried eggs sometimes have a runny bit of white around the yolk is that people put them in the fridge (when there's no need to). That means the egg starts out very cold, and if you wait for it to cook all the way through, the bottom will be almost burnt. Take the eggs out of the fridge in advance (or don't put them there to begin with), and it will cook more evenly. Also, putting a lid on the frying pan will make the air _around_ the egg hotter, so you can lower the heat and avoid burning the underside (but this will also cook the yolk a bit).
@montypythonchicka
@montypythonchicka 8 жыл бұрын
+RFC3514 Actually it depends on where you live and how the eggs are sold. In some places they have to be put in the fridge because a protective layer it is naturally coated in has been taken off as part of the factories cleaning process.
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 8 жыл бұрын
+Jenn O - Not so much how they're sold, but how they're produced. But if you live in a place where eggs actually _need_ to be refrigerated, you should move (or at least never touch a raw egg in your life). The point of keeping eggs refrigerated is to reduce the multiplication of bacteria (salmonella). So the question is "how likely are these eggs to be infected?". And, in most of the industrialised world, the answer is "not likely at all". Even if an egg isn't washed at the factory (and if we assume there was salmonella on the outside but _not_ on the inside - which is something that only happens when eggs from a healthy chicken happen to be covered in shit from an infected chicken), bacteria will continue to grow on it, and handling the egg (or letting some of the contents dribble over the shell) can still get it into the food chain. So, whether you wash those eggs or not, you should still refrigerate them, and never use them raw (or, even better, throw them away and buy eggs produced somewhere else). Several countries require factories to wash their eggs, but still don't refrigerate them. In fact, AFAIK the US is the only country where supermarkets refrigerate eggs (possibly Canada and Mexico as well, to avoid scaring US shoppers?). The original reason seems to have been the prevalence of battery farming (where infections spread quickly), coupled with the lack of hen vaccination. But these days (even in the US), egg-laying chickens tend to be given more space, and a lot of them are vaccinated, so there's little risk of salmonella outbreaks. The refrigeration "requirement" seems to be one of those things (like the ban on Kinder eggs) that survives as a kind of disguised legal protection against foreign imports, and as a way for the egg producers' associations to shift costs (and blame for salmonella outbreaks) to supermarkets and consumers, instead of owning up to the fact that some of their associates were / are producing eggs in bad sanitary conditions. Anyway, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is British, and eggs are not refrigerated in British supermarkets. Lots of people still put them in the fridge when they get home, though, simply because there's an "egg shelf" in most fridges. And, while there's no harm in doing so, it does make them cook less evenly (and is the main cause of the problem he described).
@montypythonchicka
@montypythonchicka 8 жыл бұрын
Um okay then, I was just commenting that some countries remove the cuticle so they should really be stored in the fridge because salmonella? Salmonella poisoning is literally being called a "national epidemic" in the US right now so... (source:www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-heres-why-we-need-to-refrigerate-eggs-20140714-story.html) I know the guy in the video is British and he would be safe for him to store his eggs outside of a fridge anyway, I was merely concerned that you suggested to not refrigerate them in your original comment, or even letting them sit outside of the fridge before using them could be dangerous, depending on how long they are let and if bacteria begins to grow. BTW, I don't even eat eggs, just wanted to reply to your long winded response :)
@RFC3514
@RFC3514 8 жыл бұрын
Jenn O - The bacteria likely to land and reproduce on eggs if you leave them outside the fridge in your house are the same bacteria likely to land on fruit, cutlery, bread, or anything else that you keep outside the fridge (I'm assuming you keep those things outside the fridge). Most of those bacteria won't bother you. The real issue is salmonella enterica, which already comes on (or in) the egg. For _those_ eggs, keeping them in the fridge prevents the bacteria from multiplying (but won't kill them). Note that, even if the eggs _are_ infected with salmonella, they're still perfectly safe to eat if you cook them, and still _not_ perfectly safe to eat if you _don't_ cook them (ex., tiramisu, chocolate mousse, etc.). However, simply _handling_ them can transfer bacteria to your hands. So the whole "keep them in the fridge" thing should never be a long-term measure. Instead, legislation should hold producers responsible for the conditions in their facilities, and make sure they aren't infected in the first place. Not only because of all the energy wasted washing and refrigerating eggs that would otherwise not need it, but also because infected chickens' eggs will also have salmonella on the _inside_.
