Little known fact: When offered the role of the professor, Russell Johnson accepted under one condition. He insisted that whenever his character's expertise was enlisted as a professor of science, the science itself had to be sound. Johnson was concerned that young viewers not be misled with erroneous representations of known scientific fact.

Russell was a WWII vet. His B-25 was shot down over the Phillippines and he broke both ankles in the parachute landing. Godspeed to you fine Sir! You got tenure.

He's a gentleman. Doesn't say anything bad about anybody.

Ginger: "But professor, haven't you ever taken a girl to a drive-in movie before?" Professor: " Yes i have. But the curvature of the screen and the fidelity of the sound, made it impossible to enjoy the picture"........LMAO.

Johnson had a long life. He died at 89 and seemed quite comfortable in his skin.

This is such a treat. Few actors - indeed, few people of any profession - speak of ALL their coworkers with such fondness and nostalgia.

I always thought the "Professor" was the coolest character in Gilligans Island. He's the guy I would have wished to be if stranded on a desert isle.

Alan would show up for children's benefits in costume and in genuine sincere delight. What a guy.

My favorite character of his (Russell Johnson) in Gilligan's Island was when he played the old man in Gilligan's Jack-and-the-Beanstalk dream sequence/skit. Hilarious!

Great show -- wonderful memories ---- a time when TV protected children.. (I was one of them watching TV after school) and lots of pure clean comedy --- honest laughter... RIP Mr. Johnson and thank you....
