I've just done the same, just a couple of years later whilst on lockdown (June 2020): My father was born in 1920, a bright man, who was awarded a scholarship but was taken out of school at the age of 14 by his mother and put to work in a mill, he joined the navy before the war and later worked for many years in front of the furnaces at British Steel. He never believed in Comprehensive Schools because in his opinion bright kids raised the bar for the other kids, not the other way around: I agree, but I appreciate the increased choice of subjects that I understand are available in Comps.

I too went from Akala to RK, these interviews are really insightful and shows the class/racial struggles we face in school, which i can relate to.

One thing I really like about this interview is the way James asked Russell questions that really got him to think and reflect. Great work and super cool insight .

I 1000% relate to what Russel Kane's experiences - it really rung home when he started differentiating words learned and used by groups of societies. Coming from a non-English speaking household, I did not know that I was pronouncing "ask" wrong until I was 16, I was corrected by a posh college teacher (rather condescendingly) - and I was an avid reader (still am) who's reading age was always above average.

I hope this furthers Russell's confidence(which is still a lack of confidence..truth be known it's oozing though us all), when i say that, not only was this informative, interesting, compulsive viewing, mind-blowing and humorous but in my book it's quite possibly one of the most natural interviews i have ever had the true privilege of watching. Therefore how can it not have achieved this..... 10 out of 10!!!........................................blinding interview...it doesn't get better than that James..nice one.

I'm not from the UK but I get a little of what Kane is stating here. I got out of HS and was working a night job and then was out of work for a while. I thought this wasn't working for me so got into college and later got my Bachelors and embarked on a career for over 20 years. So I can see what he means here.
