There's a great documentary series about FIFA on Netflix detailing the history of graft. It's not surprising they gave Qatar the WC. The teams should have refused to go. It's a terrible place to have a football cup. The weather, restrictions and above all the dreadful human rights abuse.

As someone that was in Qatar for a year I can tell you a few stories but it is a golden cage. One should also mention that those workers had absolutely nor rights, their passports confiscated and couldn't live the country unless allowed by their employers.

Always enjoy Russel's comedy. That being said, the underlying racism and hypocrisy of the BBC when it comes to football is just appalling. FIFA has been a corrupt organization for a long time, yet it's only brought up when a "unworthy" country hosts a big tournament. All the negative press, the incorrect reporting on the fan village ( why not show the match viewing outdoor lounges, restaurants, food buffet), the noise about alcohol ban when it clearly exists across many other stadiums, it all wreaks of the underlying idea that African/Asian countries shouldn't be "allowed" to host a big event. It feels strange to be writing a serious comment on a comedy video, but really, if England is that serious about it's morality, then why not put your money where your mouth is and boycott the tournament. ..... What little there is could honestly be called polar opposite to football culture anywhere else in the world. There's no football hooliganism what so ever. Basically no funny chants. The west is basically upset that their western liberal values cant be imposed on qatar. This is nothing short of Cultural imperialism. Certain things which are acceptable in the west are not socially acceptable in other parts of the world. They are entitled to their own culture and traditions. Who are we to impose our liberal values onto them as though ever changing liberal values are the the correct ones. Migrant workers rights is an issue, one that I have personally boycotted the gulf countries myself for. But let's not act like western media and governments actually give a shit about that. Its all about LGBTQ rights which qatar, as a Muslim country, does not care for. Agree to disagree. No ones forcing you to live there. Don't we have a cost of living crisis to be dealing with anyway??? Trust the media to fixate on a distant, irrelevant issue to distract and divide. We have far more pressing issues at home. Our nhs is collapsing, our elderly and vulnerable are freezing and kids are going hungry.

For today's match between Qatar and Senegal, the wankers with the broadcast rights in my country hired someone who had worked in a youth academy in Qatar. Obviously he spouted some crappy propaganda, but when they wanted to cut back from that to the second half, the other expert on the couch "hijacked" the outro and slotted in some harsh criticism of the human rights situation.
