RUSSIA: "A killer!" Putin wants this man! "He made no secret of it!"
In a remarkable espionage trial, US journalist Evan Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in a penal camp under aggravated conditions in Russia after being charged with espionage. This case is attracting international attention as it was concluded within just three days of trial, which is highly unusual in Russia. The prosecution had originally demanded 18 years.
Experts suspect strategic reasons behind the quick conviction. Gershkovich could serve as a bargaining chip to be used in future diplomatic negotiations. Talks about an exchange are believed to be underway, with the Russians demanding the return of Vadim Krassikov, a convicted murderer imprisoned in Germany. Krassikov, who killed a Georgian citizen in Berlin in 2019, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Vladimir Putin has commented on the swap and made no secret of Russia's interest in Krassikov. The situation surrounding Gershkovich remains tense and could soon develop further, depending on how diplomatic efforts progress.
