3:58 ~ just want to add, nowadays Ukr and Ru troops ride on top of BMP-1s and BMP-2s coz primarily of the poor mine-resistant capability of the early BMPs & BMD-2s. Are burning coffins in this modern mine-abundant conflicts ... Were designed much earlier than current crop of MRAPs. Even the Strykers had poor mine resistant capabilities and later got double-V hull retrofits. BMP-3s are rarer but Ru troops still tend to ride inside of 'em (as seen in some recent footages), even though of its poor ergonomics and egress design (being rear-engined). Ukr uses BMP-3s as strictly light assault vehicles nowadays than troop transport. And VDV tends to ride on top BMD-4Ms coz it's just a BMP-3 but more cramped. Egress is even poorer.

And there was the small problem that the BMD-4 airborne version could be penned by normal 7mm rounds meaning they offered zero protection.

Riding on top of the vehicle became very popular during the Chechen wars, when a ridiculous number of Russian troops were lost to urban RPG ambushes in their BMP & BMDs.

Ahhh, thanks! It was the same thing in the Vietnam War. American troops would ride on top of their APC's AND the LVT's. But one of the additional things that they did, I don't know how widely known this is, they used to pack the floor of the troop compartment, possibly the fighting compartment (?), just to absorb the blast of land mines and hopefully any of the fragments of the vehicle. Things like flak vests wood ammo boxes filled with sand. Possibly even the kitchen sink? If someone was feeling humorous, but filled with sand of course! Flying drones over New Jersey?!!!! You gentleman crack me up!!

Grinded out the BMD-4 during the event. No regrets about keeping it. It was a huge upgrade over the BMP-3 at the time thanks to the rapid reloading ATGMs. One of my fav event tanks

To be fair, rocket-assisted landings have been used by the Soviet space program for decades, as they recovered their capsules on the Kazakstan steppes, as Soyuz craft do to this day. The extra safety feature makes a lot of sense when you're landing on solid ground instead of water. So, there's a lot of technical know-how about those systems in the former Soviet Union, they probably didn't have to reinvent the wheel to come up with a similar system for a parachuting tank.

Remember when they promised bmd4m for the tech tree after everyone complained about the bmd4 being an event Vic? (and, then seeing how well it sold) and now they're promising other bmd variants for the tech tree? Sure yeah give us some objectively worse variants for the tech tree, that will make it up, obviously.

random info: the turret sturmling was referring to is the Sinitsa combat module, mounted on the BMD-4M and unveiled in 2017. The standard BMD- 4 I believe has the more rounded turret as he mentioned which is the Bakcha-U, same one found on the BMP-3

It's worth pointing out that this vehicle is pretty much extinct in reality now, & not just because so is the VDV, because giving it the firepower & ammo loadout of a BMP3M while making it light enough to be theoretically combat dropped by parachute with a driver & gunner aboard, even though the Russian's are never actually going to do that in reality, meant that all the Ukrainians have to do is look at them a bit harshly & they literally explode. Or... have exploded. The side armour won't reliably protect the ammo storage from incoming squad weapon fire, it'll barely deal with rifle rounds, & they are one-shots for small drones, RPGs, HMGs & .50 cal sniper rifles....
