The House of Soviets was emblematic of Kaliningrad's rich cultural history for more than 50 years. It took more than 20 years to build, and then remained empty for another 30. Now the massive building is coming down.

"Even if it was German" OK so Germans can't be victims of war? 14 million ethnic Germans that have been living in East Prussia, Silesia etc. For hundreds even thousands of years were ethnically cleansed and 2 million died as a result, 2 MILLION German women were violently raped by the allied soldiers (AFTER THE WAR) and hundreds of thousands were starved to death, civilians were bombed to the stake by the Americans and and the British. I'm not saying this as a justification for what the regime did to others but I see literally no one mentioning or recognizing these war crimes committed by the allies, no sympathy for innocent civilian life, they appear to have a strawman view of Germans even after 76 years of the war. One crime should not justify the other. I hate the saying "history is written by the victors" but in this very specific case, it couldn't be more true.

It was quite a beautiful castle that they tore down. It is probably impossible to rebuild in any way that would do it justice, but that is what they should do if it was possible. Our pre-industrial cities are often much more beautiful and much nicer places to live, as they were made for people, not for cars. Wherever possible, people should build for people, not for cars. That will last, unless crazy governments demolish it. Happened a lot in the USA too.

I think the problem is more so that in order to renovate they would need to basically tear down the building without ya know, tearing it down. Then rebuild it from the inside out whilst following the already archaic design. If it was being built from scratch today then yes that would be much faster, thus the plan to tear it down and build something new.
@ThePaciorr
@ThePaciorr 3 жыл бұрын
@@alfredvonsfer7136 yeah, renovating takes a lot longer than building new a lot of a time. Close to me they were renovating an old (70 years or something) bridge. It took them more than 2 years and supposedly they could build new one for 3/4 of the price but they didnt because of some environmental issues with simply tearing down old one. It's even more compliacted with historical landmarks because sometimes they need to do it in a technique that is dated and there aren't many specialists that can do that or it can be even hard to find adequate materials (exotic wood etc. which might be illegal to cut down nowadays)

Well here’s my opinion on this. Do I think east Prussia belongs to Russia? Not really. And the Germans pretty much had the East Prussian lands for a extremely long time. But here & there people did occupied it for a shot amount of time but it still mainly remained German until 1945. However west Prussia was mainly Poland. But when it comes to what the Soviets & of what they did to the people in east Prussia it was beyond cruel at that point, and they’ve had the lands for like over 70+ years now. & I don’t recognize Kaliningrad as a part of Russia, because of the vary fact it was occupied by the Soviets and then it collapsed since 1991, it doesn’t make sense.

But if you take the best of your construction and built cities that funtioned better you'd think different. Even your huge Khrushchyovka wouldn't be so bad if they had public bathrooms every several floors and at intervals of length. But like i said the philosophies arn't bad its just there is no insight or maybey care for citizens - so i understand why you hate them. But with the smallest "western" tweeks they aren't bad at all. @@cliffwoodbury5319 the urban planning that comes with the commieblocks is great. Nothing else is great about it. Small flats, angled walls, not soundproof at all. Packing so many people into a single building removes any feeling of community. Also management of the building. Locators often can vote on issues that causes nightmarish solutions without any technocratic approach. It’s a miracle if any „staircase” (all flats connected with one entrance) manages to vote in e.g. some solar pannels, external cleaning service, digital media usage meters or literally anything that would improve the community. Plan cities the way Soviets did, but exchange commieblocks with anything else. I was very sceptic, but after moving to the West, the typical for UK and NL red brick row houses seem to be a much better solution. I mean, if somebody should build commieblocks its Dutch with their limited soil. But Central and Eastern European states have more than enough land to build.
