I’m a U.S. citizen and believe the Ukraine war didn’t have to happen if the government of the U.S. started a dialogue. Ukraine already decided not to join NATO to avoid an invasion but for Putin this was too little too late. Dialogue is the only way and eventually builds trust. After the West kept arming Ukraine which is sadly in the Russian sphere of influence it hardened Russian resolve to conquer Ukraine and deploy regime change. Now because the West didn’t start meaningful discussions before the Russian invasion it will take many years to build trust if at all.

It is in waters open to international travel. Legally the UK can't do anything but realistically they should consider doing something anyway although that may be exactly why it was sent via this route, to create a incident and then blame it on the UK when it blows. This is what the russian government and military is reduced to as they have no means to compete with nato militarily.

Why does it need to go through the Channel? Surely because of the explosive cargo it can take the Atlantic route around the UK and Ireland. The next problem then will be the Strait of Gibraltar if it goes to Malta and I don't think that they, or Spain, or Marocco, will be happy about that either.

The Ruby is currently sitting in the middle of the English Channel about 10 miles from Canterbury. The problem is the ship needs repairs but no ports want it to pull in make repairs for obvious reasons. This creates a Catch-22 hazard no one wants. Ultimately, some government navy will risk the lives of personnel to repair it or, preferably, tow it somewhere with a long tow line and sink it.

@zonzeven If it goes into the Channel then will be in waters policed by the UK and France and both countries will be affected should it go off. Even though it is international waters the blast which equates to two Hiroshima bombs will cause a Tsunami that will do great damage to London as well as several commercial ports and that is before we even think of the risk regarding the wreck of the Richard Montgomery which is still laden with explosives. The fact that this ship has already been chased out of several areas of economic and military value suggests this isn't just a normal maritime sailing especially as it should have been turned back by Russia after it ran aground or could have gone through the Denmark straits and avoided coming close to the UK. It also hasn't gone unnoticed Putin's very clear threat some months back to submerge the UK.

By the way, when the ammonium nitrate arrived at BEIRUT port in 2014 or 2015, the SYRIAN civil war was in full heat. At that time the ASSAD Regime used ammonium nitrate as the filling for its barrel bombs. From BEIRUT to DAMASCUS ther's a good road connection for any kind of goods... Ther's no prove, but it would make sense if these 2.750 tons did not end up in BEIRUT randomly, just because of the reported "technical problems" of the vessel.....
