Russia has always been the aggressive, bullying, and attacking nation to the countries surrounding it. Finland fought back against Soviet Russia back in 1939 and won the battle. Finland will do the same in 2022, if Russia decides to invade again.

American here living in Finland for 37 years ... speak Finnish, have a Finnish wife and kid. University graduated, worked in Finnish multinational company for years. Reporting on Finland is actually lacking. Finland has already been planning for this day for decades. They are nowhere near dependent on Russian energy, every single building, and infrastructure decision in the past 70 years has war planning baked into it, nearly every Finnish male has served in the army, with refresher training, and knows exactly what is expected of them in a crisis. Finland has 208,000 soldiers ready to go, another half-million that can be called up (3 times the army of the UK). Russia 'retaliating' in the panicked, breathless manner of this reporting is nonsense. Finland already closed off its airspace to Russia, they have nearly stopped all rail traffic, and practically every Finnish company doing business in Russia has either suspended operations or pulled out, I personally know this in detail. Hanhikivi I nuclear plant, which was to be supplied by Rosatom reactor, has ended the project altogether. Public opinion could not be lower of Russia, but most see this as Putin's actions more so than Russia itself. Putin made the decision for Finland to become a full member, not Russia per se, and certainly not Finland. Better days are ahead between Russia and Finland as soon as they git rid of Putin and make sure a doppelgänger does not replace him.

To be honest the relationship between russia and western european countries have been a mutual beneficial one in a contemporary sense.... the arching issue is nato on its borders.... take nato out of europe and their will probably be peace.... while nato claims its a defensive organisation if you think critically peace in europe would make nato irrelevant and thus end the strategic advantage that the US has over russia..... the US would probably never wants peace in europe because it is against its interest and influence there..... the policy of the US there seem to stoke tension there with russia and feed off the fear against russia it creates to strenghten their position.

Finland has prepared for the worst since WW2 for 80 years having a neighbor like Russia. During that whole time they have strenghtened their military and maintained conscription unlike many EU countries giving them 280,000 war time strength and almost a million reserve personnel. With an arsenal of 700 howitzers, 700 heavy mortars and 100 multiple rocket launchers, Finland has the largest artillery capability in western Europe. Homeland defence willingness against a superior enemy is at 76%, one of the highest rates in Europe. Size isn’t everything. If Finland is going to join NATO, now is the time to do it, together with Sweden, while Russia's forces are humiliated in Ukraine and the Russian economy faces the prospect of progressive decline. Helsinki is just 240 miles away from St Petersburg, Russias second largest city. A 3 hour train ride. So the notion of Russia so just invading Finland is stupid. If you have studied Russias rhetoric in the past they use nuclear weapons as a form of verbal threats and they’ve never nuked an enemy (unlike the US). The moment they nuke a sovereign country that wants peace, they know their already collapsing country is done for. Also just because Finland isn’t part of NATO that doesn’t mean they won’t have help in the event of an invasion. Finland has works for decades on building strong Allies. Finland is in the European Union, and Russia is aware of the Mutual Defence Clause in Article 42 of the Lisbon Treaty (under which the other member states would be required to come to a member state's aid " by any possible means" in the event of that member coming under armed attack). The Russian military is struggling against a largely volunteer Ukrainian force who has "some" western military tech and who the US is feeding intelligence to in support. So anyone who believes Russia would expand its war = has a hole in their head. If Russia were to engage NATO or Finland who have a sizable competent professional army on hand they would lose on a massive scale.

Some regions are not suitable for a variety of crops, might not have practical means of energy generation, necessary domesticated animals, or a population with the needed skillset. Even if a country like the USA can make everything domestically, the cost would be astronomical than a region rich in the resources, climate, or with cheap labor. If you want to learn more, take some economics classes.

Russia has underestimated Finland before, in history. Considering Russia's poor performance in Ukraine recently, I doubt the Fins are quaking in their boots. Finland should be made very welcome in NATO. It is long overdue.
