I have zero experience with BMPs, but I was involved in amphibious exercises with BTR-80 during my compulsory military service in Ukrainian army in 2010. It didn’t take a week to prepare a BTR for river crossing, but it took 2 days to tighten and seal all the drain plugs and latches and to be sure all the amphibious gear works as intended . Plus, all weapons, ammo and equipment had to be removed to make it lighter. The company commander specifically instructed drivers to drive carefully, because once BTR touches solid ground with it’s belly, you have to do the drain plugs all over again. Anyway, all but one BTRs made their way across the lake. One got some water into the intake, critically stalled the engine, drained the batteries and had to be towed to the shore. Somewhere at home I still have the photo of guys standing on the roof of the BTR in the middle of a lake and shouting for help.

Thank you for sharing your personal insights. If you see my comment, do you have a personal view on the state of the war's development so far? Western news is very pro-Ukraine, which I want to believe but it's not reliable to believe that filtered news. How do the actual citizens and soldiers on both sides feel and how are they doing? I am in some online communities with medieval armored armored combat, and I hear 1) the Ukrainians seem very proud and motivated, though concerned by the Russian numbers and weight of weaponry -- I've read dozens of comments about how they have waited in line to get supplies and ammunition, slept in subway tunnels waiting to defend their city, and seen a community fundraiser to buy someone's brother (a volunteer soldier?) an offroad truck to use; and 2) those Russians think the war is reckless -- certainly their own international sales have been completely destroyed but also some of them seem personally quite upset at this invasion of a neighbor who should be a friend instead. In both cases, many of them are facing challenges in relocating their businesses west into e.g. Slovakia and away from the war. It's really informative to hear details such as how water can easily get in once the plugs are compromised by hitting the ground, or how water causes which systems to fail. This fits with how most inexperienced people (TV news, civilians, even amateur military history enthusiasts) tend to assume a claimed function or ability on paper is 100% usable like a on/off light switch. If only they would pause 5 seconds to consider how complicated it is to change summer/winter tires on a car, or drain and replace the oil. Try making that car float safely in water. Now scale that up to a 20-ton armored vehicle with systems that have not been designed for easy civilian consumer maintenance. :P

@@dakaodo Armies are 90% over hype, propoganda and lies. It's the reality. It's same everwhere. All those features, ads, documentaries, news. Serve to scare the other side away, by making them believe that you actually have those capabilities. So every gimmick counts as "full reliable awesome feature that will shock balls". In reality, it's your own soldiers getting their balls shocked, while trying to use that awesome feature. Really, all these tanks are actually cannon fodder, why put expensive tech there? That's why you don't have expensive reliable tech there. A tank is just an armored truck with a slapped on artilery in it. War in itself is stupid and sad. But it's always a real part of human history. Which is even more sad.
@sergeigogenko9192 жыл бұрын
@@dakaodo I can only tell the Ukrainian point of view. We were kinda fed up with Russian propaganda since 2014. Everyone knew, the war will start at some point. We weren't prepared enough for the war but we did what we could. Some of my friends signed a reservist contract, others joined territorial defense. Every single person I know helps the army in some way (donates money, helps with supplies, does some kind of moral support). As for living in the metro stations: it's totally true for Kyiv and Kharkiv for the first weeks of war. (I live in Kyiv and I have a few friends in Kharkiv). We are really willing to fight for what we believe in. We have more men willing to fight than government can arm and feed. In Kyiv it's approximately 1 slot for 6 men. The support of Russia and soviet union is almost non-existent. We desperately want the war to stop, but only plausible way to stop it is through Russian defeat. I don't have an idea of what's really going on at the frontlines but I can definitely say that the troops' morale is high and the soldiers are far from being exhausted. We really appreciate any help we can get (even thoughts and prayers do these days). And my personal thoughts: we wouldn't last a week without international support. The only hope we have is that at some point Russian troops will be depleted whereas ours will be rearmed with western equipment and trained properly by NATO instructors and will be able to regain the lost territories. So far the things are far from being good, but at least we stay our ground (mostly) and hope for the best.

If it took only 2 days to prepare but then only one vehicle made it through, then it probably should have taken more than 2 days to prepare. That said, thanks for the insight, because right or wrong, if that's what's going on it's good to know.

The definition of "high intensity combat" is resource utilization that exceeds maintenance capability. IOW, high intensity combat means that the combatant is wearing down/sacrificing its own capacity to fight. Which is acceptable if the tradeoff is sacrifice in exchange for important objectives achieved. A small note to crossing rivers with BMPs by swimming. The Czech Army - which uses BMP-2s - does regular swimming excercises with those vehicles, but those excercises are always conducted at the same spot, where concrete ramps with slopes leading into the water are built on both banks of the river. An officer told me that the problem is not crossing the river, but getting out of the water on the other side. And no commander would want his BMP company stuck floating in the middle of a river without any way out. Therefore swimming with BMPs is cool on paper, but impractical irl.

Correct. Lots of Bradleys drowned when trying crossings. Bridging is better, but more vulnerable to, say, saboteurs or drones or arty. As we’ve seen. Ukrainians seem fairly good at interdicting Russian army tactical bridging. But here’s the issue. Ukrainian forces are backed by their country and logistical lines which could be interdicted by the Russian air force (not the “RAF”!) but who pretty much aren’t doing the job. The army-dominant Russian military structure simply doesn’t know how to either develop or properly use airpower. They like artillery, which is a brute force method fitting the Russian model. BUT, Russian forces are backed by the entire country and logistical might of RUSSIA. They can keep feeding men and materiel into this fight without much capacity for Ukraine to interdict those lines. Yes, the Russians have only certain logistical lines. But the rail lines in Russia that back them up are essentially unlimited for this type of war. The Russians have the long-term logistical advantage despite their incompetent operational performance thus far. Just remember the classic Russian military MO: massively screw up initial operations, draw back and then apply mass and overwhelm the enemy. Mass wins, whether it’s going after Tatars in Crimea in the 18th, 19th, and 20th century or Ukraine today. Mass, proximity, and sheer capacity for suffering have been Russian military advantages for centuries, ones they are conscious of and rely on.

In Sievierodonetsk/Severodonetsk (you see it spelled both ways because the ie/e vowel is a letter that our Roman alphabet doesn’t have), the first two “ie/e”s are pronounced with a “y” sound as in “yes”, so it’s more like “syev-vyer-aw-daw-NETSK” (again, “syev” and “vyer” here are not like “sigh” and “Levi’s”, but just a “y” sound as in “yes”, said with the “e”…”ss-yev”, “vv-yer”, as a single syllable). And while we’re at it, Kyiv is pronounced like a very quickly-said “KIH-yeev”, where “kih” sounds like “kiss”. Hope I was able to make that all make sense.

You are absolutely correct on air support as well as we would have artillery established to cover. Infantry could possibly be dropped behind lines to assist with multiple aspects. It sucks that you as well as many of us commenters are providing the Russians better information to advance than their Generals. The fact that we aren’t supplying offensive weaponry to Ukrainian military is the hardest point that you expressed at the end. The defensive weapons provided aren’t helping them push back the areas already acquired by the Russians. There will have to be tough decisions made to help them recover from the threats.

Also 40 Billion that'll 100% increase tensions between US and Russia. Also will harden the Russia-China alliance. We shouldn't get involved. The aid would not and will not be reciprocated. Why are we getting involved now? Why not when Russia annexed Crimea? We're aiding a country that would not aid us. We don't need to be the world's police. They kept vehicles like the T-14 Armata out of the fight because they don't have enough to actually to deploy them effectively. Actually, what you saw in the 2015 parade is possible the only T-14s that they have. I believe that they temporally halted production of this vehicles a few years back. This actually shows a weakness that Russia has and that they are unable to produce vehicles like the T-14 and even the T-90M because they simply lack the financial and industrial capability to do so. That's why you see such a mis mash of older generation vehicles in the Russian military (T-62 really lol) because that's what they can actually deploy. Everyone keeps saying the ukrainian attack towards Kherson was enabled by the sinking of the Moskva, but i have yet to see a single person point out that this attack happened as soon as the Ukrainians announced they had the Harpoon anti-ship missiles Denmark sent them online. Sinking russian ships didn't free up those forces from Odessa, as exciting as that was the russian navy still has plenty of ships. getting defensive systems they trust to counter a naval landing before they hit the beaches is what did it.
@thespanishinquisition40782 жыл бұрын
Moskva carries more weight here. Important notes on why: 1-The Dutch Missiles arrived at Kyiv, they still need to prepare them for real use, that will take days. 2-Moskva aside from its importance as the fleet's flagship was carrying the anti-missile and air defenses, it was basically a mobile "shield" for the other ships, which are for the most part fairly outdated and severely lacking in real defenses. Hence why it was such an important target. Without Moskva everyone else in black sea fleet is an easy target, and with the Turk strait closed only way the russians are getting defenses there is declaring war on Turkey and therefore NATO. So yeah, killing that ship was VITAL to freeing up troops because now so long as they have missiles and drones everyone else can focus on something else.

The Ukrainian T64 isn't something to laugh at. during the cold war, the Russians wanted a really good tank that could do anything, this is when they invented a tank which scared the shot out of the west, the T64. However, it was really expensive and couldn't be produced in mass. they left most of the T64s built near their factories in Kharkiv. After the collapse of the soviet union, the Ukrainian government used their blueprints of the T64 and made a charged up version, with a gun stabaliser. so the tank in the clip is probably an older variant.

So one night on exercise we pulled upto a river in Germany in my Chieftain tank. As we sat there the Royal Engineers bridging unit drove straight past us and into the river, they formed a line in the river and then the tops of the vehicles opened up and a bridge began to form between each floating unit. Within an hour they were connected and then we began driving over. That was really scary as I did not want to go into the river but it was completed without a hitch. Once the squadron were deployed across the bridge they started to take the bridge apart for the next river crossing. Unbelievable and the river was a good 300 feet wide and this was I think 1974.

FYI, for pronunciation it's useful to remember that the incorrect use of "h" in transliterations leads to errors of pronunciation. Any time you see an "h" in Russian (or Ukrainian) you should sound it as a "g." Hence "Ihor" is actually "Igor" and "Luhanks" is actually "Lugansk." This rule always holds. The mistake is due to an error in a very early Russian-English translation manual that was, thanks to Soviet insistence that no errors were ever made in a Communist system, never corrected. Conversely, Russian speakers imagine that "h" is always a "g" sound, so we have voiceovers that insist one stays in a "gotel" and the young magician was called "Gary Potter."

As far as I know, it's actually more complicated. The Ukrainian version of the Cyrillic alphabet actually has separate H (г) and G (ґ) letters, while Russia only has the G (г), which looks the same as the Ukrainian H. In exchange, they don't have an official letter for H. Phonetically, the closest to H is the "Kh" (X in Cyrillic). So in Russian, H always gets replaced by G, whereas in Ukrainian, G almost always gets replaced by H. In both cases there are a lot of words that sound weird as a result. I don't know the historic background behind that, though.
@MrKotBonifacy2 жыл бұрын
@@gradivus. I'm not sure what is that "historic background" you're referring to, but after Bolshevik Revolution, Soviets decided to simplify the alphabet, in order to make literate as many people as possible, in the shortest time possible (literacy rate wasn't all that great back under Tsar). Obviously, they did it not for the benefit of people, but to enhance the reach of their (Bolsheviks') propaganda, which was back then mainly through newspapers. Anyway, you're right - there's this funny way of changing "h" into "g" (г), in Russian - so "Hague", which in Polish is spelled "Haga" becomes "Gaga" (Гага) in Russian - even though there isn't any obvious reason why it couldn't be spelled "Хага". Judging by Polish pronunciation and spelling (Polish being closely related to both Russian and Ukrainian), there used to be a distinction between "glottal/ silent h" - something akin to "hour" or "home", and "hissing h" (in Polish spelled as "ch"), which is more like well-pronounced "h" in "history" or "perhaps" (well... perhaps, as I am not a native English speaker). But at any rate the distinction is pretty much lost in Polish, while Russian and Ukrainian still get this "switch".

T-54s had a one-axis stabilzier similar to the Sherman and M3 Lees. Later on it was upgraded with 2-axis stabilizer which I think carried over to the T-62. T-64 came with stabilizers. Another thing cappy got wrong is that the UA army had active T-64 before the war. It wasn't like they 'resorted' to bringing them out from storage. The video shows that there's a building on the left and forest on the right. If the T-64 kept going, it wouldn't be able to maintain LOS on to the target so it had to stop for a shot. Also no matter the stabilization, the gunner bumping around is going to affect accuracy.

Russia has 4700 artillery pieces in Ukraine and 20, 000 more in reserve. It has the domestic industrial ability to manufacture and supply munitions from raw materials to finished products uninterrupted by any sanctions. Even if the US supplied 1000 artillery pieces, they would need - in a WW1-like artillery 'meat grinding' slugfest, a constant supply of NATO shells. Ukraine would find it difficult to obtain that constant supply to match the rate of fire that Russian supplies can muster.

Back in the 1990s I was obsessed with this idea, because I noticed that the weight of the A-10's GAU-8 was about the same as the 120mm gun on an M1A1. I'm pretty sure it's a dumb idea, but it sure would look cool in a video game. In all seriousness, though, the much smaller .50 cal GAU-19/B might be a useful addition to an MBT. It's only modestly heavier than a normal .50 cal, but it would offer a lot more firepower to use against small drones and infantry.
@brandondillman58482 жыл бұрын
@@IsaacKuo the GAU-8 , or at least it’s concept, could be used in a very effective manner on a tank support vehicle as a main weapon. The upside being that , due to it not being on a plane, a whole lot more ammo could be carried. Take the GAU-8 and add some anti tank/ anti personnel missile launchers, some grenade launchers, and a system to aim and fire and drive all from inside the vehicle and it would be a devastating weapon in my opinion. @IsaacKuo2 жыл бұрын
@@brandondillman5848 Well, something similar to the GAU-8, but with fewer barrels, could definitely be better. For example, the GAU-13 weighs much less but it has a rate of fire more suitable for a ground vehicle. I'd argue that the GAU-22/A would be even better. It's actually not THAT much lighter than a GAU-13, but its 25mm ammo would allow a lot more ammo than the 30mm GAU-13 ammo. Those shells are the size of freaking milk bottles! The thing about the GAU-8 is that it was designed for a very specific purpose - taking out ZXU-23 Shilka's from the air. So, it needed more range than the 23mm, along with an extreme rate of fire so the attacking airplane could fire a lethal short burst and still have enough time to turn 90 degrees away before entering the Shilka's range. The fact that this gun would also be able to penetrate the top armor of enemy tanks from above was a bonus. For a ground platform, the rate of fire seems not so useful - look at the 20mm Vulcan used on the M163 VADS. The gun (originally designed for air-to-air use) is capable of 6000rpm but they reduced it to 3000rpm for this use. So here's the reason why I think 25mm is better than 30mm - there's not really any targets that a 25mm GAU-22/A can't take out that a 30mm GAU-13 can. The 30mm has better range, but for urban combat I don't think that's really going to make a difference. But you can carry about twice as much 25mm ammo. But anyway ... I guess the real question is whether or not they really want a gatling gun platform at all. I guess the M163 VADS has proven useful enough to at least keep around. They've basically never been used for their original anti-air role, so really the only reason for keeping them in service is so they can shoot at soft ground targets. But neither has there been any clamor to develop a proper replacement (something without an exposed gunner, and maybe a touch of armor).

20:10 T-64 are completely different then the T-62 it’s reported Russia are sending towards the front. The T-62 is built on a much older technology level the T-64. The T-72’s were mainly built as a cheaper and faster to produce alternative to the T64’s. Meaning that the T-64’s were actually a lot better then the T-72’s. Ofcause a good part of the Russian T-72’s have been upgraded a lot so they might be better now, as I don’t know to what level the T-64’s have been upgraded. The T-62, is kind of an upgraded T-55 with a 115mm gun. Going to be a logistical nightmare if mixed with newer USSR/Russian tanks. It got a much weaker armor, though the frontal armor have slightly got improved in their last upgrade around 1980. There are no modern 115mm shells made, at least not to my knowledge. The T-64 use the same size 125mm gun as T-72, T-80 and T-90 versions. Even the T-14 use 125mm main gun. That means the logistics are easy as all tanks use the same shells on the Ukrainian side. Also they can fire the most modern shells they got access to.
@dalel36082 жыл бұрын
The T-62MV has been performing well in Syrian hands, the armor upgrades make it T-72B/-90 comparable on the front, the extra crewman (no autoloader) provides extra eyes & extra maintenance hands, and the optics upgrades make it nowhere near as blind as it used to be. Still a fuel thirsty and underpowered pig of a tank though. Used as an infantry support gun in Ukraine, and not as an tank brawler, would be a benefit to the Russian side. If their commanders send them off to die like the rest of the gear so far, then it'll make no difference.

To Expand on that, the company that designed and buidl the T-64 During Soviet times is Ukrainian, and the Ukrainian army has a large number of heavily modernized T-64's, and their most modern T-64 variants are significantly superior to both Russia and Ukrianes best T-72. As for the T-62, it is indeed an improved Version of the T-55, which in turn is based on the T-43, so the 62 is really a pretty old tank in comaprison to the 62 which was a new design.

Good video. I'm no expert so I can only summarize what people smarter than me have said. For the US, and to some degree NATO, this is still a foreign policy issue more than a war issue. Foreign policy is about power rather than morals. Throwing 40 billion in equipment and aid to Ukraine, and all the aid we gave them after the incidents in 2014, was an investment. Ukraine is now a buffer zone between Russia and NATO countries that can grind down the Russian military and their worldwide power projection. The longer this lasts, the more it weakens Russia. The longer it lasts, the less likely Russia will pose a threat to NATO countries. A near peer has been shown to be a paper tiger and not viable competition on the world stage. This hurts Russia, and helps NATO countries. Notice how I haven't said if it helps Ukraine? Right now they may just be an unfortunate pawn. I hope that once this is over all of NATO pitches in to rebuild Ukraine to the glory it deserves for taking this on the chin and basically preventing WW3 by keeping the conflict within their borders. I don't know if that will happen.
