Russia has almost no influence in Italy. There are nearly no ethnic Russians living in Italy, and Italy is pretty far away from Russia, and the Alps are difficult to cross. Italy's population, economy and military are not negligible. The only type of influence Russia may have there is energetic dependence of Russian oil and gas, but Italy gets a major part of its oil and gas from Lybia and the rest of the Middke East trough an Lybian-Tunisian-Italian pipeline. And why isn't the UK included in the Tier 3 countries of operations? Surely Russia has a lot more operations in a country that was the world leader 50 years ago than in a country who lost WW2.

They are over-simplifying Russia's sphere of influence possibly based on USSR's influence in Italy... you should know Italy was very "red" back in the day alongside France.

Putin's personal relationship with Berlusconi used to be big issue. Surely Berlusconi's cronies or other pro-Russia leaning people are still in positions that can benefit Russia, be it in some positions in government or business. This increases, but not guarantees, that Italy might not help its NATO allies, in case Russia does something. As for UK being left out, Germany and France have some pro-Russia leaning parties (as Front National or AFD) creating large media buzz around them, even getting some candidates elected nationally. Britain really has none.

tudor mardare- Italy is far closer to the west then Russia, Italy is definitely a "tier 3" if that is even a level of classification. Italians may put a potato in their spaghetti and meatballs once an a while but that's the most influence Russia has on them!!
