The biggest tragedy of the Su-47 is that it did not wait for the engines for which it was developed. It was supposed to have a power plant from the upgraded AL-41F with thrust vector control and the ability to fly supersonic in the cruiser mode (without afterburner for at least 2 hours). Unfortunately, aircraft and engines are developed by different design bureaus and many aircraft do not wait for their engines, although they are on the shelves of history. Among them are the Su-47, and the M-50, and the T-4 (Soviet Valkyrie) and all the ekranoplans of the Alekseev Design Bureau. All these machines were designed for their power plants and they never showed what they are really capable of.

I thought forward swept wing had problems going supersonic because of pressure buildup at the wingtips causing them to twist Both SU 47 and X29 were abandoned because of this?

Did you ever hear about the tragedy of SU-47 the Berkut?
@guestnight9463
@guestnight9463 Жыл бұрын
@@kentl4386 This was one of the reasons, but not the main difficulty. The twisting of the wings manifested itself only during active maneuvering (the estimated cruising speed should have been Mach 1.6 and for active maneuvering it had to be reduced to 0.9. However, at speeds over 1.5, no one is engaged in aerobatics anyway). The biggest problem is the transition between Mach 0.9-1.1 and Mach 1.8-2 - at these speeds, airframe vibration appeared, which, according to calculations, can cause loosening of fasteners and / or destruction, and each time a long service was required before the flight. The reason - errors in the design of the airframe / the curse of the reverse wings / the use of the engine in the afterburner (the plane did not fly on its own engines) was not fully clarified. Then the carrier-based fighter was not needed at all due to the closure of the aircraft carrier program, and the passing time already required new machines to work in the sky. The Su-47 was actually still a test glider. The final version provided for folding wings for ship-based, continued flight with the loss of 50% of the bearing surfaces of the wings, and automatic return and landing on the airfield when the pilot was injured. (yes, it sounds fantastic, but such a system already existed and worked at the end of 1988. The first and only flight of the Buran spacecraft - the system did not just return the aircraft to the coordinates, but calculated the conditions / wind and made decisions about the optimal landing approach "Buran" went to the alternate runway because the automation considered that the side wind was too strong). Perhaps in its final version, the Su-47 would look a little different (this is typical for Su-brand aircraft - the first flying aircraft of the series always differed from production models. The machine was tested and changes were made to it during the running-in process). At one time it was believed that there were actually at least two Su-47s. The aircraft changed some elements and it was clearly visible in the photo (panels and aerodynamic elements of the airframe)

@Frostbytedigital
@Frostbytedigital Жыл бұрын
Push propellers are largely low/slow applications for a reason, and if I'm going low and slow with a likely single push prop(like ultralights I've flown) I certainly want a very stable wing design for gliding through an engine out situation. Fuel savings can be damned, over my safety. But I wouldn't mind hearing the data on that setup if it ever exists

Forward sweep tends to kill laminar flow, so you can turn almost without resistance from the air, but you also can't use laminar flow to stabilize. It's great for maneuversbility but makes the flight adjustment computer mandatory.

Forward swept wings greatly reduce the stall speed, giving superior close range dogfighting capabilities. In todays air engagements, dog fights happen at kilometer ranges beyond the reach of each others guns. However, I guess having superior last-second evasive maneuvers would come in handy... for the lucky.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios 10 ай бұрын
@@jkg6211 pretty much. "normal", back swept wings tend to stall from the wing tips. But with forward swept design you'll keep aileron control even when lift is gone. And shock waves start at the root of the wing instead of the tip. Same with vorticies. In general a really good design that is just super unstable (aka manoeuvrable even when you don't want it) and needs the right materials to be even possible to build.

I would love to see a video made on the P51-FSW proposal. There isn’t too much information about it available, but it’s was a proposed Forward swept wing P51 with mixed propulsion systems (A turbojet at the back and F82 Piston Engine at the front)
@foxgaming76yt24
@foxgaming76yt24 Жыл бұрын
So, basically, they attached a turbojet at the back and called it a day? I mean, obviously there were some design differences here and there, but yeah. Reminds me of the Yak 15 ngl, but it didn't use hybrid propulsion though. What I'm interested in seeing is the Supermarine Spiteful, Hawker Sea Fury, the Yak 3 and the He100. The Yak was actually a rather popular aircraft, so it's not exactly exotic, while the sea fury was basically at the peak of piston engine aircrafts potential. The Spiteful meanwhile was supposed to be the Spitfire's replacement, and the He100 was an immensely fast aircraft for the era it was built in, reaching 600+ kmh in level speed, even at lower altitudes. Considering this aircraft was first test flown in 1938, this was pretty much the fastest aircraft of its time. Unfortunately, it never went past prototyping and was never put into production, but a video on the history would be nice. It's blueprints also seem to be destroyed too, so that sucks

@@MrTaxiRob I hadn't thought about that fact, but I'm pretty sure there were many other factors within Nazi Germany that had caused them to reach the situation they had, the effectiveness of its Luftwaffe just being a small part of its overall competency. The plane itself was far from perfect either, despite being incredibly fast for its age, it had one of the most vulnerable designs for its cooling system, which was placed around its entire structure, meaning that even a single 7.62mm would render the plane unfliable after a relatively short amount of time. So, it wasn't a superior aircraft compared to the allies, just another take on an aircraft design that could've potentially been seen in the skies of Nazi Germany and their adversaries, I mean, there was a reason why the Bf 109 was put in production over the He100 after all.

The maneuvering leverage of the reverse wing, was complex as driving a car with rear steering only, so an AI navigation support was needed, it also limited aerodynamics into a lean form body. So to fix that & also reach high SR speed, the wing needed to be a separate stage action from body, that scrolled the craft main wings from mid to rear adjustable. This way the craft could've been also bulk, as used in fictional cartoons model crafts of shows like X-Men or Zillion Red Photon, only now feasible in real life.

@@Aeronaut1975 nope. This is gibberish, there are many gliders that use less dramatically forward swept wings that are used as trainers with simple push rod and cable controls. The controllability and stability of an aircraft are largely determined by the relationship between the center of mass and the center of aerodynamic pressure. The sweep of the wings forward or otherwise has almost nothing to do with it.🤣

Maybe in '84 I'd heard of this forward-swept idea, or I just thought it had possibilities. I designed and built a model of an airliner-looking spaceship for some visual effects shots we did for a movie I think was released as SPACE RAGE. I used the forward-swept concept for the ship which is seen briefly in flight in space and coming in for a landing on another planet. I felt this would give this ship a different look than what was going around at the time. The film, as I vaguely recall, was kind of done in a western-in-SF-setting style, and starred an actor who I believe was in a series called THE GREY FOX. Very fuzzy memories of that part of it.

Correction from this experienced engineering expert in the field, stress is not the problem per day with forward sweep, it's static structural stability, aka divergence. Stiffness of carbon fiber allows for higher structural divergence speed, preventing the wings from ripping off.

It's very unstable, without constant computer interference it would spin out of control. The upsides are that the instability makes it more maneuverable and the forward wings make it stall less somehow.
@CarlosEduardoGuerraCova
@CarlosEduardoGuerraCova Жыл бұрын
Aside from being very unstable, it severely limits the weapon loading capabilities and high speed maneuvering, thrust vectoring allows traditional aircraft to achieve about the same level of maneuverability without these compromises, also with hypersonic missiles and missile/radar technology getting better and better, close encounter between enemy aircraft (dogfights) are even more unlikely, meaning aircraft need to fly faster than ever and stay fast to get into firing position, defend any incoming missile and recommit until downing the enemy, not possible with forward swept wings threatening to break off for turning at high speed, violent turns are not necessary to defend an incoming missile, speed is.
@wilburwilliams36
@wilburwilliams36 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you turned too hard the wings might shear off. Some video games, like Ace Combat 7, tried to solve this with a variable wing that could be trapezoidal for high speed and forward-swept for low-speed maneuverability. However, studies have shown that during transition, the wings would still come off due to stress. So there isn’t a “practical” solution to this issue unless you have very good avionics, and very good stealth to evade missiles and enemy radar.

For a business jet with engine on the fuselage, the forward sweep would allow for even more sweep at the transonic shock near the trailing edge of the clean wing. That is if your plane flies slightly faster than all commercial jets. I think that the citation X can have the shock there. It is still stable , but thirsty.

Forward wings make for a much more nimble plane, but more unstable. Swept wings make for higher speed. This is well established. Flat wings make for the most stable platform for bombing. I've seen plans for a jet that can reconfigure the wings for whatever situation it's in, but that was a while ago. I think the push now is on for a more generic airframe that can use technical trickery to simulate the various wing configurations. The F-22 has much more "normal" looking wings. It uses thrust vectoring to increase maneuverability, and stability for bombing isn't an issue when using GPS-guided munitions. Max speed is another questionable capability. Sure it sounds awesome to go faster and faster, but really how valuable is that in a war? If you get there fast but run out of fuel, you're really not winning. The F-22 is pretty fast, but it has "supercruise". That means it can break the sound barrier without using the afterburners. All of these super fast speed jets use afterburners to get there. This drains the fuel very fast, and becomes a liability on combat unless you're trying to run from the fight. It's much more useful in a war to have good speed but exceptional efficiency and range. I think there is an ideal range for loiter time. There were some planes of the past that were inefficient so they would get to the battle and only have enough fuel for maybe 15 minutes of fighting before they had to return home. That's not enough. Likewise, if your loiter time was 8 hours, that's too much. You shouldn't have any ammo left after 8 hours of fighting. A more practical concept would be to launch from farther away (extended range) or return home for more weapons. 8 hours is too much loiter time, and a commander would see this as wasteful. So instead you use drones for maximum loiter time. They could stay over target for 24 hours. Why not? And they would already be there if a fleeting target popped up. Fighter jets would then be used mainly for getting to new theaters where drone coverage isn't available. I'm thinking 30-60 minutes is good for loiter time. Get too high or too low and the commander will readjust the operations accordingly.

As a one of a kind fifth generation fighter aircraft, the Sukhoi Su-47 is as sleek and awesome like G1 Cyclonus! It has a forward swept wing design capable of hitherto-impossible maneuvers. If Sukhoi had the right funds for mass production, the Su-47 was planned to enter service in 2010 but never happened, in favor of the PAK-FA program the Su-47 was never chosen because it's airframe design is already obsolete.
