Denmark and Sweden control the very narrow entrances into the Baltic Sea. Keeping ships out that come from Russia would be legal and easy. Charging crews with terrorism and holding them for years would make taking money to do this less appealing. Selling the ships and cargo that did this for compensation would make shipping companies and Russia reluctant to keep doing it. Without doing these things the countries along the Baltic will become like Vietnam and the Philippines where the local bully claims your waters or like Taiwan where they claim your land water and people, and "hand it all over, or else".

@@dustintacohands1107 Look at a map of the entrance to the Atlantic. Easy, yes. Could it trigger war, yes. But Russia is a bully. Letting them get away with it is the highest risk path to war.

This is the second major incident... Why aren't these ships out of Russia being escorted as they steam across all that vulnerable European undersea infrastructure?

You don’t understand the volume of shipping transiting the passage. Intercepting out side of entrance and denying passage is easier. You also don’t understand the “flagging” of ships. This ship was not registered or flagged in Russia. It takes time to determine the actual origin or ownership of a vessel. It would be more effective but not easy to set up a water road block to identify ships way before they enter the passage. Announce that all ships must declare themselves before entering or be denied passage. Remember that economies depend on this shipping.

Escorted by whom? At what cost? Who will pay that cost? What if Russia refuses escort? Will tensions rise even further? Lots of questions - too many to list.
@JaneJetsin
@JaneJetsin 3 күн бұрын
@ Cargo ships can’t refuse escort. It’s like a semi hauling a loaded trailer refusing a car to follow it. Obviously countries with the escorting vessels. Smaller fast inter coast vessel are inexpensive to operate. Who cares if it raises tensions? REALLY! That’s like saying don’t have a neighborhood watch because it might upset the burglars!

So what would stop the Chinese in a submarine from doing this? How would it ever be detected anybody ever think about that?
@AnniKlami
@AnniKlami 2 күн бұрын
There are hardly any submarines in The Baltic sea. Some Russian ones maybe. The cables are cut by tankers dragging their anchors on The bottom of The sea. Many of these tankers May Be Chinese but they sail under different flags and are chartered by The russians to transport oil from St Petersburg area

A Chinese "Military" submarine intentionally cutting a cable of a NATO nation would likely be considered an act of war or incredibly close to one.
@ospehu1
@ospehu1 Күн бұрын
Baltic sea is guite shallow plus the seabed is formed mainly from granite or gneis so there for the sub's actually are one of the worst ships to sail in there since every sound they make bounches back from the seabed. Plus average depth is around 55m so it is easy to sea mine and good place to use depth charges as well.

Russia is literally trolling at this point. The whole plausible deniability thing over the data cables, Ok. A month later you do the exact same thing? And of course they shot down a commercial jet carrying both Russian and ex-Soviet citizens. And had that plane been allowed to land at Grozny there’s a possibility that plane would have had enough hydrolic pressure to make a safe landing. Instead the Russians forced that pilot to cross the entire width of the Caspian Sea and even then the fact those pilots saved as many lives as they did they’re heroes. I think just today the Ukrainians captured a North Korean mercenary willing to talk. That’s gonna be interesting lol. I know Kim Jong Un was happy to send his troops over there in exchange for caviar and cognac. But the Chinese are only offering material support and I guess a lot of oligarchs are less than happy because in return the Chinese got a lot of economic boons that’re bleeding them dry. Probably why Putin took pity on Assad and evacuated him.
