Updated version part 1: • UPDATED Russia: The Em...
Updated version part 2: • UPDATED Russia: The Em...
It’s 30 years since the tumultuous events of 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell, the Iron Curtain lifted and the Soviet empire began to crumble. Our Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg has travelled across Europe to examine how Russia views the events of 1989, and how Moscow is trying to regain influence.
NB: For all those asking: the music at 1'47 is "Red September Reborn" by Terry Devine-King. Thanks for watching!

@Hexus Mexus So why did the Berlin Wall fall? Could it have fallen in the 70's? With fossil energy and commodity prices at their height? With Breshnev as GS and Andropov as Chairman of the KGB? Unthinkable! It did fall, because the USSR did loosen its grip on its satellites. It did loosen its grip because it couldn't afford its role as superpower anymore. And that is identical with crumbling power. So the docoumentary here reverses cause and effect. What is true is that the USSR als a state began to crumble after the fall of the wall. But that's another question.
@samwanjere2039
@samwanjere2039 3 жыл бұрын
@@hannshartz4815 I agree on the two points being related but distinct. The fall of the Berlin Wall is an effect. By this time, the USSR was already on a downward spiral. This had began earlier but accelerated post-Breschnev. In truth, sustaining that empire was not possible. All empires inevitably decline. Here, the Beeb indeed got their explanation wrong.

True. If there was any one event that could be labelled the beginning of the end it's the Soviet Union's Vietnam - the Invasion of Afghanistan. But this isn't a typically British perspective, it's a typically NATO piece. It's not educational it's opinion forming material. They probably chose the Berlin wall rather than the invasion of Afghanistan as a symbol of Soviet evil because that could be problematic considering NATO's military adventures over the last two decades.

No shit... they'd literally shoot their own people if they retreated. Without the lend-lease deal, and the combined air power of the US, Great Britain, and Canada, the soviets wouldn't have been able to push back Nazi Germany. Russia would have just thrown body after body, until their military lost moral and quit the same way it did in WW1, mainly because they had zero equipment, and they had some of the worst generals out of all of the countries involved in the war.

well, this blame sort of divides equally between "the west" and russians... in a lot of places western companies bought ex-soviet companies for dimes and shut them down to prevent competition. f.ex. western cigarette companies buying local tobacco factories to dismantle them to gain bigger market shares in the new eastern market.... at the same time, oligarchs decided to sell those factories for dimes, criminals decided to exploit their old neighbours and colleagues instead of cooperating and working together. in the baltics these same shutdowns and poverty happened, but people also had constant urging and desire to "go westward" and that meant inviting over western advisors, going west to learn, and working hard. now latvia-estonia are in some instances better than western europe, while russia is left behind. in this instance, the russians mentality is different, for them its always us vs them, and that means russia vs the world, and also our family vs everyone else. that means if you become a company executive, you will corruptively hire your relatives to high positions and steal all not bolted down from the company. but this sort of mentality only works if you constantly conquer new places to steal from, enslave other people to exploit. now they are afraid of nato shackles, as this means they are like rats in a bucket, stealing from each other, disassembling giant companies, aerospace rockets and deepwater diving equipment to buy diesel for their personal bmw's and ham on their bread.... a slow downfall of them eating each other

If you notice documentaries that tend to be on the negative side about the United States of America you're commentator will usually have a British accent also.... Especially all documentaries that our moon mission was fake will be a British accent person.... And about everything about the Earth is flat again you'll notice this a person with the British accent again..... And I'm glad you brought this up because I'm sitting here listening to the story about the USSR and again it's a person with a British accent..... And there used to be a British rock and roll group who had a song back in the US back in the US back in the USSR..... And of course it's another British rock and roll group who was dubbed knighthood by the queen herself with the song sympathy for the devil..... And read this one excerpt from the songs lyrics that crushes me.... Stuck around St. Petersburg When I saw it was a time for a change Killed Tsar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain (I'm an American that's a sentimental fool... This part of the song about Anastasia draws tears in my eyes as she was a young girl very beautiful that break any man's heart just for the sight of her beauty .... I ran across some devastating information one time researching the British just before the massacre of the czar and those guardian Anastasia as it was one of Anastasia's cousins of the royal family in England that hated her and was her diabolical plan that started the revolution just to ensure that Anastasia would be murdered I can't go on it I'm crying with this... It's been so long since I've read about it I can't remember the details but it was a member of the Royal family who was a woman close under the Queen's power as it was just family business as the British royal family has skeletons in their closets don't you doubt they don't... So what I'm saying about the British it's just not politics only but their own blood relation turning against one another but Anastasia never had a clue she was only a young girl born in royalty without any animosity towards anyone she's just a teenager she couldn't know anything I cry for her today I don't know why) I rode a tank Held a general's rank When the blitzkrieg raged And the bodies stank This is about our United States general George Patton a crazy insane root and tooting pistol packing like the cartoon character Yosemite Sam in my opinion... There was some documentaries and horror movies about him by the dozens as general Patton proclaimed that he was incarnations of great military leaders in the past as in one movie it was played as he was staring out across this field in like a trans and one of his operatives asking me all right and Patton's going like I was here once before and would direct his battle plans that he claimed he'd won a battle similar to what was coming and he would be Victor about every time crazy s***... Anyway that's what I'm making the song when he said I rode a tank held a general's rank .. in world war II are tanks were named after Patton as the Patton tank but next to a German Nazi tiger tank the tiger tank could crush a Patton tank like a monster truck crushing cars in the arena in America like Bigfoot undertaker of the monster truck mayhem entertainment we do crazy things like that in America) Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name, oh yeah Ah, what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game, oh yeah I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made (This last verse has always intrigued me as I can't place history to this words of kings and queens fought for 10 decades? For the gods they made? I feel so compelled to sort out the riddle as I can't help from thinking if we can sort out the history that this part of the verse proclaims will show us just how ridiculous we are pushing others with our beliefs of conquering them just like religion where everyone believes their God is the only God and everyone else who has a god should die.... And that my friend goes back a long long ways as to the mortals who invented religion who also invented money and taxes and war give you three guesses who that was and the first two don't count could it be the royal family again and just how freaking old and just how freaking far back do they go that is the British empire that's been the largest empire in the entire world history and this didn't come from stupid teachings from America I looked this one up myself and it's agreed on a lot of other countries about the British look at them now as they sit quietly at home but it's always a British accent person telling the story their way.... Peace brothers God I hope this turns out better than anything else last.... And I said it before I'll say it again I don't have to agree with Vladimir I don't have to like what he does but God damn it I admire the bastard because he has a very strong heart perseverance as he is a real man unlike some of the Sissy boys and my century as you should be aware our general millions of population have no voting power no control of what we call a democratic Nation but if you pry into our pervert perversive leaders leaders passed they have been seen to commit blatant Federal offenses breaking federal laws and never brought the trial never committed never accused never arrested murdering our people right before our eyes and the majority look onward like it never happens like today President Nixon ordered national guardsman to break up the war protest at Kent State University Ohio 4 students were machine gun down and unknown amount of others went to the hospital full of bullets and the poor students who were murdered never had anything to do with the war protest going on and when I say war protest a bunch of students walking around in a circle on the campus carrying signs stop the war as it was Vietnam raging halfway around the world that was basically a population control move as I had close friends and family was daily letters coming in in the mail with pictures and explanations of really what was going on in the jungle fighting and it was just mayhem bought and paid for orchestrated ambushed after ambush so each side was murdering each other on a daily basis as for orders of their superiors marking them right into death traps anyway enough of that talk) look at the history of the United States beginnings and the signing of the declaration of Independence 1776 I can send that there are no conspiracies there are no conspiracy theorists as the United States of America is the largest known conspiracy the world has ever seen that is still raging...... Talk about propaganda no one is better at it than the unknown man behind the curtains of the United States of America's secret government as I like to call them as today we have a new hero I like to call Little Lord Fauntleroy namely Elon Musk who seems to have the answer to everyone's trouble and how in the hell is a private citizen of the United States of America allowed to boast on KZbin what he's going to do to stop this what he's going to do to stop that and now boasting that he has a robotic army to fight Vladimir Putin's army with Will somebody please take him over in the corner somewhere and explain to him what I would like to do as he's got every millennial age group in America following him like he's the pied Piper that's very very dangerous for all of us will someone accidentally take him out with some friendly fire please..... And he's very busy with real machinery that's really taking away all the carbon dioxide out of our atmosphere as our leaders of the United States claim is making a big carbon footprint causing global warming causing overheating causing plants to die because they're oversaturated with carbon dioxide friendly friends please listen to what I just said this is insanity real as I'm speaking and the trees and plants seem to be dying everywhere the oceans seaweed is gone washing up on the beaches there's no buds on the trees in the Midwest and it's springtime and no buds coming out of the trees branches means no leaves are only source of oxygen for every human being man woman child and all dogs cast and the oxygen levels are dropping and the carbon dioxide levels for the entire Earth atmosphere is only 0.04%, and Joe Biden who's a puppet keeps screaming out I'll cut that number in half we won't live long enough to see it I got to go this is too much we got major countries rattling their swords at each other while our billionaires Elon Musk and Bill Gates are destroying the atmosphere by allowing all vegetation to die that is our only source of oxygen well I said here with broken bones surviving on disability payment checks that I can afford to be free I'm so free to cash my check but enough gasoline in my pickup to make it to Kroger's to buy enough groceries and make it within a day or two no food till I get another check that is my freedom as you can see I'm free to do it or I'm free to refuse and die

...And as a human being living here in one planet we shared day by day I wish there should not be a war and misunderstanding as if we could share the same feelings towards one another as human.To love one another even if we are all in one far away land.As people it is inscribed in our hearts the true meaning of identity being human to show support and care and love to one another even though we raised in so many different races.It's not a problem being red or yellow or black or white? Is there lacking in some point just to live a healthy and happy life or some kind of fulfillment when we are all still alive now? Who will win after this tragic moments they called war? And I'm very sure we are all just loosing in the end.It's a devastating scene to see children and women and innocent one dying because of this crazy war.Instead of killing one another how about making good music and indulge in sports instead of fighting and war? We only live only once and why we should not give our neighbor a chance to live to about 40 50 or 80 yrs old at the very least just to experience how to live harmoniously on earth we called ours.Life is just too short and to all leaders please give peace a chance.People in Ukraine God bless. - The people from the Philippines also pray for you.

Oh what could have been… peace in our time. I was part of a UN Youth Peace delegation in 1988-89 behind the Iron Curtain. Everyone under 30 wanted out of the USSR, Hungary especially. Watching the Berlin Wall come down, had me in tears watching the news. I’d like to think that we played a tiny part in the fall of the curtain… but, I guess 40,000 nuclear weapons, Reagan, Gorbachev, Yeltsin & Thatcher played a slightly larger role. 😂

NATO and the EU had to force Ukraine to "join" them. This is the cause of this war. If USA will not accept Soviet bases in Cuba and subscribe to the Monroe doctrine with massive buffer zones for themselves; why should they expect Russia to have it any other way?
@Delta2D2

@@mmuku8655 You are mistaken, but then that’s what your ‘Disinformation Mission’ is. Ukraine 🇺🇦 applied to join NATO 9 years ago. Membership could have been swift, however, given the situation in the East, it was constantly delayed. NO NATO COUNTRY WANTS WAR WITH RUSSIA 🇷🇺. Neither do we want to see a country being ‘invaded’ or having ‘civilians targeted’, despite what your government run media tells you. When you look at the destruction and civilian life’s lost, do you still believe that you are liberating Ukraine 🇺🇦? It’s easy to compare Ukraine 🇺🇦 to the Cuban 🇨🇺 crisis. However, NATO was not the one to introduce short range nuclear weapons to the region… Mr Putin did. Further, they are hidden in cargo containers, in docks, on trucks, on ships, on trains, which is sneaky, and that broke the original 1989 agreement. NATO only responded. Nevertheless, Ukraine 🇺🇦 NEVER asked for nuclear weapons, nor would ever be offered. Any nuclear weapons are looked after by specific units, and NOT just handed over. I have just read a brief on civilians being recruited to spread disinformation across Russia 🇷🇺. “Zanami Pravda” & “Tribunal Project”, which is about taking western media stories about Russia 🇷🇺, and tearing them apart to put Russia 🇷🇺 in a glorious light. Propaganda hasn’t been seen like this since the fall of the CCCP. *I am recently retired Flying Officer, Royal Air Force. Nothing I have said is not public information, but it’s accurate. But ask yourself; why do NATO countries want war with Russia? Why do we want another war, or colder-Cold War. Putin is making us enemies, not the other way around.

The Russian contribution in World War II has a BIG caveat. Did you forget that Stalin signed a treaty with Hitler that including invading a neighbor (Poland) and splitting it with Hitler? If you dance with the devil you may get burned. Then you also have to consider what Russia did after the end of World War II. First agreeing to free elections in Eastern Europe only to then resign and install communist regimes everywhere that they occupied territory. Russia should embrace democracy and stop being a asshole for the sake of being obstinate. No country in the West would support an invasion of Russia and NATO is no threat to Russia, unless you have designs on the independence of your neighbors.

I completely disagree. If you get your "education" from Hollywood, then yes, but nobody who cares about history has forgotten Russia's sacrifice. Nor have we stopped appreciating it. As far as i know GDR and BRD was formed thanks to the will of United States, as they wanted to split Germany in to occupation zones. Later during the Cold War, Soviets had their troops in Eastern Germany in case War would break out, just as Americans had their in Western Germany. @@robertomanalo6346 Russia never lost there black Sea base in Crimea. Even when it was given wrongly to Ukraine. The reason Russia secured Crimea. Secured there military assests and base from possible threat. Over 95% of Crimea are ethnic Russians. Not a single person was killed in Crimea. Russia deployed overwhelming force. Many thousands have died in Ukraine all across the country. But mainly in the east. Where the Ukrainian military attacked it's own people. To the maker of this film, what you don't understand is that there was and is more at play in 1989 than you can possibly imagine. For all the anxiety over Crimea and the agitation over its interference since that time....if it came out why the USSR fell and Communist China survived Russia would simply go silent, its eyes would go black and set like stone and you could then officially be truly afraid if you lived anywhere near them. It wasn't an accident of history and it wasn't people power. Feel lucky and fortunate that wiser men no not wish to cause events to become out of control.
