After the Second World War, the USA pursued clearly defined interests in Europe. They founded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to enforce them. The first NATO Secretary General, Lord Ismay, formulated its task unequivocally: "Keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down" - the Russians were to be pushed back from Europe, the Americans were to assert themselves permanently on the continent and the Germans were to be kept down.

I think it is true we should go at this in a broader sense. However what the US has to do with Ukraine is pretty much A LOT! Who knows if the reasons are valid since we can not go back in time and manipulate and coerce less of the world stage. The reality as of now is that the US has consistently lost the plot and exemplifies what he declares it is against. I mean at present the US is complicit in everything in Yemen and yet we are going to arm Ukraine now too. The old strategies do not work for a multipolar world. The US needs to go back West willingly not by force. Russia head back East. Europe become independent. A broader example to the world could be that the US finally instead of threatening everyone and contradicting itself could publicly say hey yah we have been mucking shit up a lot and we will now restrain ourselves. More weapons in Ukraine is just going to Isis all over again with the Azov picking up all the guns and turning the Country into utter chaos. Joe Stalin is not anybody I would "treat" with unless a gun was pointed at my head, much as Hitler was doing in 1940. Lying and deception are the largest tools of Russian diplomacy going back into the 19th century and further. General Patton may have had the right idea- it may seem repugnant to us today, as it did then to a war weary world, but it would have been much cheaper then. One thing stands out; Russia had little in the way of an internal oil business, state or otherwise- 8 in every 10 gallons of fuel oil or lubricants was lifted from US wells- eight in ten. The Russians still have problems with the military logistics train to support troops and mechanical war operations, even a few hundred miles into Ukraine and relatively close their own fuel depots. Thank you, Ms. Hill- wonderful summation of an incredibly complex problem that has many elements reaching back to and before WW2. I don’t agreed. Putin put his people into running the state TV stations. Their job is to make Putin look like an angel if they want to keep their job. Our Liberal media TV etc… makes our Democrats look good, omits their screw ups, etc…. What the US needs is impartial investigational type media that reports both sides of an issue. Democracies need this type reporting more than anything to work properly. I’m sure there may be some bias reporting on the West’s side, but we are talking about many countries with different media which I doubt are colluding on the stories they are writing or reporting on. On the other hand Russian TV and reporting is 100% bias Putin’s way. As far as hitting civilian targets, that’s Russia’s mode of operation to demoralize their enemy and that’s sick. Speak to any Russian or Chinese that have moved to the US and has learned the language and they will say they have more freedoms and the media is more honest than Russian TV.

I would like to see some discussion of the role that nuclear weapons play in ongoing statecraft of this sort. I only ask because in my observation, it severely limits the “military options” available…which is probably a good thing. For example: Does NATO discuss options such as (a) Furnish Ukraine with enough military, logistical and humanitarian support to maintain what is essentially a stalemate with projected casualties of less than 500,000 over 24 months….versus….(b) A direct military involvement with a 50 / 50 chance of “quick” outcome…but also a 1 / 1,000 chance of a “civilization ending” nuclear exchange between NATO and Russia. Were this to occur it would probably be “by accident” when the wrong missile and flick of birds meets up with the wrong early warning radar and launch computer algorithm…or something like that. NATO or the USA has never engaged in a direct shooting war against Russia beyond light skirmishing and depth charges dropped on nuclear armed Soviet subs during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Members of the “nuclear club” simply do not go toe-to-toe with each other. It’s too dangerous. Even India and Pakistan now conduct their “wars” with each other through proxies.
@wisdaniel2 жыл бұрын
You cannot say that a nuclear event is a 1 in 1000 chance when you are dealing with a one man show, and that one man is a sociopath who cares about nothing, and no one, but himself and his ego. You can not attribute chance equations to a scenario like this.
@josephhuether11842 жыл бұрын
@@wisdaniel I am talking about probabilities and game theory that has been at the very center of nuclear command and control since the inception of the nuclear age. Rest assured, hundreds of “invasion of Ukraine” scenarios have been gamed out at NATO…including the “mad man” scenario. BTW…nuked are not launched by “one man with a button”

A gendered approach: Russia is a large tough nation with a glorious past, and like masculinity uses its strength to conceal its insecurities demanding attention and respect. When its honor is challenged, it gets violent. Ukraine is a younger, fresher, fertile land, confident and despite past mistreatment was rediscovering its independence. Russia treats Ukraine like an abusive ex-husband who is obsessive, jealous and still crazes affection. When Ukraine flirts with anyone else, Russia comes in and “saves” its estranged love interest by physically forcing it back into submission, and making perfectly clear to prospective suitors that its “property” is its “territory” alone and not to be looked upon, and certainly not touched by another masculine nation. On top of being brutal and criminal, it feels like toxic and creepy. Even more so as Ukraine goes from being defiant to reluctantly conceding parts of its own autonomy. Ukraine’s women are a key part of the resistance, and research has shown this is key to resisting invasion successfully. At the same time, Russia is targeting civilians, especially women and children, as if to punish their betrayal.

I think it is obvious that the process of NATO enlargement has nothing to do with the modernization of the Alliance itself or with ensuring security in Europe. On the contrary, this is a provoking factor that lowers the level of mutual trust. Now we have the right to ask: who is this enlargement aimed at? And what happened to the assurances that our western partners gave us after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact? Where are these explanations now? You don't even remember them anymore. But allow me, before this audience, to recall what has been said. I would like to quote a speech by the Secretary General of NATO, Mr Wörner, in Brussels on May 17, 1990. At the time he said: "The very fact that we are ready not to deploy NATO forces beyond the borders of Germany gives the Soviet Union firm security guarantees." Where are these guarantees?" Dr Hill explains why Russia is serious about Ukraine not having any connection with NATO. Then she say's we can't ignore that. What does she mean, by we can't ignore that? Is she saying, therefore we should be tougher on Russia, demand an end to her collaboration with Belarus? What exactly does she think the greatest military and economic power in the world "has" to do, because Russia doesn't like Ukraine talking to any NATO ally? She talks about Russian aspirations, as if the Russian state has coherent aspirations. Maybe, she is right. Maybe we aren't dealing with arbitrary rule by a fascistic dictator. Maybe, we are dealing with a political elite which has a clear policy framework and who support the supposed dictator Vladimir Putin only if he furthers their political agenda. It's not money that interests them. They could care less about Ukranian oil. Is this what she is saying? Russia, not Putin, wants to rewrite European History for the last thirty-years to achieve a more satisfactory political arrangement? Goodness me. And, now, according to Dr Hill, we in the West are in a "very difficult" position. Why? Because, the UK has to replace Johnson with somebody who supports his foreign policy to the gills? Because, of a perceived weakness? Because, of frictions in an alliance with over 30 countries having a combined annual military budget of more than a trillion dollars, compared to Russia's $70 billion dollars per year in military spending? Because, of a combined NATO economy of over $40 trillion dollars compared to Russia's economy of $1.8 trillion dollars? We should be shaking in our boots? Really? Russia has us, where she wants us? Is that what she is saying? Who is pulling these people's strings, and how do they come up with this stuff? Who are they advocating for? Cheap Russian gas, and a state of perpetual war which would only serve the American military industrial complex? Obviously, they've been talking this way from the beginning. We need to put an end to this.war. Let's support the Ukrainians and get the job done. So we that we aren't dragged into conflict ourselves. Russia can share the frigging black sea with Turkey, and Ukraine in the same way every other normal country has to do share their waters with their neighbours. What kind of mind game are we playing here? Is this the choice we must make, between weak willed idiotic Democrats and evil gone-rogue pirate-Republicans? I mean, Trump would be sending military aid to Russia were he in power. He'd want a cut in the booty. Dr. Hill should check out a map of Eastern Ukraine some time. Because, this is as crazy as crazy gets.
