It's now been 10 years since Russia illegally annexed Crimea following an invasion using troops without Russian uniforms. It was the beginning of a decade-long war with Ukraine - culminating in the full-scale invasion two years ago.
Its position on the Black Sea makes Crimea a strategically important asset. The peninsula serves as a key base for naval fleets and safeguards security interests in the region. Crimea is home to both ethnic Russians and Ukrainians - as well as indigenous Crimean Tatars and others.
Russia's annexation tactics there are being used to claim other territories in Ukraine.
Following the illegal annexation of Crimea, Russia made promises to improve the lives of the people living there. Ten years on the situation has deteriorated. Western sanctions have impacted the economy and Russia has been cracking on human rights. For the Ukrainian leadership and the Crimean Tatars, the liberation of Crimea remains imperative.
For more on this, we’re joined by Maria Tomak. She is the head of the Crimea Platform - an initiative launched by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy which is designed to coordinate the international response to the ongoing occupation of Crimea.

One thing that is never discussed when it comes to Crimea is that Crimea was an autonomous region of Ukraine with its own Constitution and its own parliamentary system of government elected by Crimeans. This is important to know because it lends credibility to the referendum of 2014 to reunification with Russia and explains why Crimeans have not risen up against the Russian military as you saw when Iraqis launched an insurgency against the US and British occupation forces in the 2000s. Crimea is lost to Ukraine and is forever Russian because Crimeans want it that way. It's hard for the Wedt to accept but that's the truth.

@jesusaguilar4585 Ай бұрын
@@yuriyseliuk4120 I do believe I saw protests in Crimea back in 2014 against the referendum and don't doubt that it happens today as well. But having said that, the vast majority of Crimeans accept Russian governance simply based on the fact that if it were an occupation and Crimeans wanted Ukrainian governance; without autonomy as was the case from the 90s to 2014, we would be witnessing continual rebellions similar to the US occupation of Iraq, and killings of Russian soldiers by Crimeans on a daily basis. This simply is not happening.

Honestly, at the moment there are hundreds thousands of Tatars living in Crimea, and there are more than 5 milons of them throughout Russia. There were no cases of deportation or other forms of persecution. There are Ukrainian-language schools in Crimea. An attempt to present this situation as the deportation of Tatars during the USSR is simply ridiculous.

Sure Russian population, which elected an ex-KGB officer for a president in a free election in 2000, is a problem. Russia signed three international agreements by which it recognised Crimea as a part of Ukraine. The last of three - a bilateral Ukraine - Russia treaty 2003 - was signed by Putin personally. Crimeans themselves voted in favour of Ukraine independence in the referendum 1991. To be precise 54% of them and 57% in Sevastopol.

Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity. In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas. If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy. Zelensky admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements. Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time Russia's national security was compromised once nato began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining nato was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns. 20th September, 2021. Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO NATO is not a defensive alliance. Nato illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter). We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster? Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest. Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland. Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”. Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it. Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country. Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list. Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list. There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence). The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present. Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave. Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) RIP. The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims). The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter. I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion. I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written. Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

Not even close: in 2014 Putin threatened the then Ukrainian president victor Yanukovych if he went ahead with the Ukrainian people’s desire, following a democratic vote, to become an EU member county Hundreds of EU delegates were present in Ukraine awaiting for Yanukovych to sign the paper work. However, he returned from a call with Putin looking extremely frightened - and refused to sign, causing the Ukrainian public to revolt and complain. Following the fighting between the then Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian people, heavily armed Russians appeared in the Donbas. Recall what happened in Georgia and Chechnya? Putin delivered his militants to lay siege against the Ukrainian government and would use the false claim Russian people were being targeted - how many civilians have access to automatic weapons and rocket launchers We all know what then happened in Crimea. It’s hardly credible that one day, for absolutely no reason. Ukrainians started persecuting Russian speaking people. It’s very funny how this happened in Georgia and is now happening in Romania right now 🥴 I will claim that as Russian land now thanks It’s also of no coincidence that 80% of Ukraines massive, untapped natural resources, reside in the Donbas area Putin is trying to steal Nice try bot

Putin emphasized that Crimea is not only a strategically important territory, but also the history, tradition and pride of Russia. The most important thing is the local people, who have never been separated from Russia. Putin also mentioned the four eastern Ukrainian regions that were annexed in special military operations, describing them as "New Russia". He also said that compared with Crimea, the return of these regions was more difficult and tragic, but they all returned to Russia in the end. It is a grand event in Russian history. Putin also announced the construction of a new railway connecting Crimea through the occupied eastern Ukraine region. Putin said that in the Russian-occupied areas of Berdyansk and Mariupol, the road between the two eastern Ukrainian coastal cities has been repaired, and the authorities will build a new railway line extending to the Crimean port city of Sevas. Topol, became an alternative road to the Crimean Bridge.
