Ep. 346
Watch Jordan Peterson's "Vision & Destiny" on DW+ bit.ly/3KrWbS8
Peterson draws upon his extensive research and relatable real-life experiences to illustrate how to develop attainable goals for intimate relationships, meaningful friendships, and your career. Transform the chaotic potential of the future into actuality - with a vision.
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Senator Mike Lee discuss the ever present conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the role of the United States in that conflict via proxy war, the rise of ESG investing, why the top investment firms do not care about your values, and what Senator Lee plans to do about it.
Elected in 2010 as Utah's 16th Senator, Mike Lee has spent his career defending the fundamental liberties of all Americans and advocating for America's founding constitutional principles. Senator Lee acquired a deep respect for the Constitution early in life while watching his father, Rex E. Lee, serve as the Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan. He attended most of his father's arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court, giving him a unique and up-close understanding of our government. Lee graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Political Science, and served as BYU's Student Body President in his senior year. Senator Lee serves as the Ranking Republican on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights, in addition to serving on the Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests, and Mining and the Committee on the Budget.
Dr. Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: bit.ly/3KrWbS8

The most amazing thing about this interview is that neither party tried to articulate what are Russia's goals in this conflict. They talked a lot about how to define West's victory, but to my mind, the very minimalist definition of a victory is to at least disrupt the enemy's plans and prevent the enemy from achieving his/her/their goals. And, obviously, that cannot be achieved without a clear understanding of what these goals actually are. P.S. And, of course a gem like "Russia's been a problematic country for the last 150 years" is so amazingly Anglo-Saxon-centric, that I just burst out laughing. It exactly mirrors Russian perception of the role of Great Britain and USA in their history. Another interesting phenomenon, that I would think could merit a discussion from an eminent psychologist :) .

PLEASE ARTICULATE WHY you think Putin is such a terrible person and leader. I want TRUE FACTS on this perspective. Im so tired of being called a Putin shill, when EVERYONE just repeats rhetoric about the man. And please, Mr. Lee, correct yourself in saying that MOST US CITIZENS are for this WAR ON RUSSIA!!! Because it is NOT SO!! Please educate yourselves on the ongoing battle in the Donbas Region and the slaughter of Russian Ukrainians, the ban of news agencies, the jailing of the US reporter because he spoke out against what UKRAINE is doing!!! And yet, the President of this mans country doesnt even speak about it nor defend the man. This is ALL criminal!! And to speak of it in the way you two do is such a travesty!!!

In our childish attempts of social security we have trashed valuable relationships with the our multiple cousins (nations and cultures of the earth)(American as a global diaspora). This is the idiot senator who fell for an obvious excerpted video of Zelensky that was carefully edited to make it appear that he (Zelensky) was saying that American troops would be dragged into the Ukraine-Russia War. In fact, Zelensky had said that if Ukraine falls, then the Baltics may be next, at which point American troops will be obligated (under NATO) to become involved ('so it's in America's best interests that Russia doesn't triumph over Ukraine'). But Senator Lee heard what he wanted to hear, and rather than checking the veracity of the video, jumped on it to further his misguided narrative. A complete fool...

After the war, the OUN circles operating in exile conducted a systematic action of changing history. In publications, studies and memoirs, the topic of cooperation with Germany, participation in the Holocaust and murdering Poles was omitted. The OUN and the UPA were presented as noble organizations fighting for a free Ukraine against two enemies - the Third Reich and the USSR. An idealized image of Bandera was also built as an outstanding politician, leader of the nation, thinker and noble fighter for freedom. All those who recalled the Ukrainian collaboration, participation in the Holocaust and the Volhynia massacre were called Soviet agents. Rossoliński-Liebe

Dear Mr. Peterson ...I am a big fan of yours from Romania and as a Eastern European, I beg of you to listen to our perspective. Russia in all its iterations has been an existential threat to all Eastern European countries ..whether it had been the Russian Empire, the USSR or Russian Federation, Russia expanded 88 sqkm every day for the last 300 years. It attacked Romania and the principalities that preceded it, 17 times in our history. It carved our countries' teritorry to its will and acted since its inception until today like a imperialistic juggernaut. Poland has dissapeared for almost 140 years in the Tsarist Empire. All Eastern European states have suffered tremendously under the Russian yoke - only in USSR, there have been millions of people going to Gulag and starved by the Holodomor famine. When finally in 1989 we had a chance to rejoin the European family, we did it without looking back, glad that the "big Bear" was weakened. Being in NATO was our best guarantee for national sovereignty (and by our I mean countries such as Poland, Romania and the Baltics). Both economically, socially and politically, countries of the East EU have made incredible progress (My country had a 800% economjc growth in the last 22 years). We developed also a civil society, going and protesting each time our politicians were not respecting the rule of law. We managed to put many of our corrupt politicians behind bars. You say Ukraine is corrupt? It sure is - but it will be 100 times less corrupt under the Western sphere of influence than under Russia's tentacles. EU has rule of law control mechanisms and it slaps the wrists of any state that doesn't respect the democratic principles of separation of church and state, separation of state powers, rights and liberties etc). If anything its the KGB leftovers who fuel corruption and secrecy because of their ties to Russia and the FSB (successor of the dreaded KGB). Ukrainians had 2 relentless revolutions wanting to break away from Russia's tyranical regime - and wanting to allign themselves with the west - from a principial point of view - it wants to break away from the post USSR oligarchical tradition and attempt to be more like its Eastern European sisters, who are all, shining examples of democratic and capitalist success. They could witness the fantastic devellopment happening in the new EU countries and how things started moving both socially and judicially. When you say that Ukraine is tied to Russia historically, that may be true for the Eastern side, but Western and Central Ukraine are far more similar to Central European countries like Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic (both linguistically and culturally). There is more linguistic affinity in between Italian and Romanian (77%) than in betweem Russian and Ukrainian (62%). Western Ukraine has been part of Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Romania, thus being culturally intrinsicly linked to the Central European Civilization. However, even Eastern Ukrainians in their large majority don't want to be part of Russia, even if they are Russian speakers. It's easy to see why - what Russia has done to its neighbours only in the last 30 years is unspeakable - it attacked Moldova in 1991 and controls it through the anachronistic stalinist Transnistrian "region". It attacked Chechnia twice and completely flatened the capital Grozny and they killed 150 000 civilians. It attacked Georgia in 2008 and took 20% of its terittory. It attacked Ukraine and took Crimea...Then it moved to take the Donbas. Russia will not stop at Eastern Ukraine - it will move to take most of Ukraine up to the Carpathians as well as Moldova, The Baltics and possibly North - Eastern Romania (Western Moldova). Please stop appeasing a war criminal - and don't sell Eastern Europe to the Russians like the West did after WWII at Yalta.Yalta has been a unbelievable tragedy for Eastern Europe, the effects of which can still be felt to this day. We in Eastern/Central Europe, if anything are the most logical allies of US/Canadian conservatives - we believe in classical liberalism, freedom, right to self determination and definetily wokeness has not permeated our societies like it did in the West. We, if anything, are as societies "vaccinated" against communism and its "benefits" and we have seen how much capitalism has benefited our countries. We need US conservatives to support us and not to use us as a political token against the US democrats. It's not a Left vs Right wing issue here - but an issue regarding if we want countries to have the right to sovereignty and self determination or not. Is it morally acceptable to appease a country behaving imperialistically in the 21st century? Should we create a precedent and let big countries have their way with smaller countries? Wouldn't that create the greatest precedent for China to attack most countries in Asia Pacific based on some "invented" historical clause? In Eastern/Central European countries the political spectrum from Left to Right is united in identifying Russia as the existential threat and as the "de facto" aggresor in Ukraine.

It was not a debate. Debates assume adversarial confrontational exchange of opinions. And that's a big problem of this discussion, there was nobody to challenge the faulty logic, wrong assumption, and invalid data. I wish this were a debate and somebody knowledgeable could retort the irresponsible statements made here, there was so much wrong said about the war and it will further mislead many, who listened, and who know even less about the topic.

As a person, who has lived in Russia for 45 years, I can say, that even though all your considerations are very interesting and as far as I can humbly tell correct on the American side (ha-ha, how arrogant is that), it's still surprising for me to what extent western people tend to look onto Russia and Putin through some kind of distorted glass, I mean through some "western lenses". And it affects their judjement and conclusions to a great extent. And it might be one of the reasons all this is happening in the US now. Russian mentality is totally different from American, and I've come to believe that without living in it for several years you can't form any correct opinion on the processes that take place there. You can't get the right picture just from the books or from conversations with some people. It's dificult even for the Russians, for example, to understand Putin's intentions and state of mind (because he has been sitting in his Ivory Tower for so long now), but at least we know where he comes from and how he was formed, from inside. And that's why I can tell that even the most educated and wise speakers don't see the whole picture. (Sorry for my mistakes in English, I hope, I managed to convey the point).

Ok, so I have got a few questions for you. So, I guess I am mainly of English/upper European descent, though with a little east European. My ancestors may have got here, in america, around the time of the mayflower. What I do know, is that they did not want to remain England English. They wanted to identify with a new country. And today, I can't think of really any american, austrailian, canadian etc. who is thinking at this moment, "I really wish I could become a citizen of England, because my forefathers were English." So does that mentality then apply to the Russians living all around the world today, even those in the Donbass? Like me, though I am technically English, do they also choose to forget their old country? If that is the case, and so they are like me in that regard, then it cannot really be proved that those Russians in the donbass and crimea all really want to still identify with russia, as russian russians. Do you know what I mean

@@uniquename846 You are thinking in the right direction. I am a Lithuanian and I thought I knew Ukraine quite well, but since the beginning of the full scale invasion I've got really surprised by the number of pro-Ukrainian native Russian-speakers I on the Ukrainian TV and KZbin cannels. The identity of a native-Russian-speaking Ukrainian is really a fact and now it looks to be prevailing even in the unoccupied part of Donbas. When it comes to the occupied part of Donbas and Crimea, things are much more complicated; however, even the infamous Igor Girkin admits that they have lost most of those who were welcoming "the Russian spring" back in 2014 - first and foremost because they never even tried to instate a just government and/or improve life quality in the occupied regions. So, I have a strong feeling that those regions might welcome the Armed Forces of Ukraine with much more passion and sincerety than one could expect.

@@uniquename846 If your ancestors went to America on the Mayflower, the didn't "move abroad seeking to identify with a new country." The Mayflower was in 1620, at which time the colonists still considered themselves thoroughly English. The US didn't become a separate country until 1783. A new national identity didn't really develop until sometime after that. Your ancestors simply moved to an English colony on a new landmass. With regard to your point about Russians outside of Russia, it's a complete sequitur. These Russians are indigenous to the lands on which the live. They didn't move there, fleeing Russia. It just so happens that after the fall of the Soviet Union, they now had a new arbitrary border drawn up around them and separating them from Russia.

I felt like this was somewhat misleading/misinformed. If I paid $1m for a tank 30 years ago but sent it to Ukraine today, it will be marked as $1m spent on the war. That's fine from an accounting perspective, but it means simply stating totals is not representative. In many cases, those weapons (for example, the M113) were no longer suitable for American use anyway. Their value to us was as good as scrap, so on an open market we wouldn't be able to get the full value from the weapon. Many of your points seemed correct, but I felt like I should point out this one. Thanks for what you do!

This is NO DIFFERENT than when Quebec had two, yes two, referendums, about whether to separate from Canada. Majority voted to stay. “Certain” individuals “challenged” the “process”, and the 2nd referendum had even more people vote to stay a part of Canada. She said to us in a whisper once “I have to be careful what I say here in Australia about the war. I like Russians, studied in Moscow, I speak Russian, but if I say that here people seem upset”. The relationship between the two countries is long and complex. It shows that our society continues to be easily fooled by propaganda, but also an equally unwillingness to listen to anything that may be contrary to the “story”.

Term is based on silly uniform, that were given to ussr soldiers in WW2 or something, im not exactly sure. So this word meant type of clothes. As a person from Ukraine who moved to the US about a year ago and previously a big supporter of JP ideas - I can notice a few things: - Poor understanding of Peterson and Senor on what is really going on in Ukraine. And on the history of Russia - Ukraine "interaction" over the last 2 decades. -A heart and mind full of fear from Senator side that doesn't let him to even say what he wants to say. -Basically, their idea is to trade peace with Russia, let it take over some territories and continue trading pretending nothing ever happened. But hey, I think we've been over such a scenario with Georgia, Crimea, Donbass and it didn't end up well. Also, completely disappointed when Senator or JP would use some vague information (like UA tanks planning to get to Moscow) and make a conclusion from it.

With all respect, as someone who is from Europe and looked into it, there is a lot more involved in Ukraine especially around its history that makes it a very complex situation as you pointed out. However, this is why the ukraine good, Russia bad scenario is so nefarious. It’s simply not that straight forward and peace should be sort where possible. The rhetoric from the US and NATO was not helpful and fuelled the start of this war, and they appear hell bent on continuing it without discussion or peace talks. I think claiming the interviewees are ignorant to it is emotional and not correct and it does not change the fact that all possibilities should be tried - and not just claim that it wouldn’t work.

Ekaterina Shulman or Maxim Katz are foreign agents on the payroll of the US State Department. They have a very biased position. A polarly charged one sided position and point of view. It is dangerous to trust their opinion because it is not an adequate assessment of reality. In fact, an adequate assessment of what is happening will be made only by historians a hundred years from now. Try to consult sources such as Mikhail Hazin, Sergei Pereslegin, Andrei Shkolnikov. Agreed. I’m all for second guessing and questioning, but he completely ignored some of the mainline arguments. Any smart person should be scared of Putin, but this is a unidimensional consideration. Does it therefore follow that we let saber rattling determine foreign policy? His references to pre WW1 policy could be appropriate, but what about 1930s pre WW2 policy? Appeasement is also a problem. And the Eisenhower references to the threat of the military industrial complex are important injunctions to take into account. But increased military spending also helped bring an end to the cold war. This doesn’t seem consistent with Peterson’s extended metaphysics or his continual calls for multivariate analysis.

The ultimate root cause question here is was this war provoked by NATO expansion, Russia expansion, or a splitting of Ukraine?
@ingabaranauskiene5889
@ingabaranauskiene5889 Жыл бұрын
@@bthemedia The ultimate and basicly the only cause of this war was Russian expansionism or, better to say, revanshionism and desperate desire to get its empire back. The split within the Ukrainian society has always been a result rather than a cause, because Russia has always been intentionally fuelling every internal tension that has ever occured in Ukraine. Besides that, those tensions have never been as harsh, as it may look for an uninformed outsider: even among the polititians, there were plenty of those who were anti-Maidan, but immediately stood against the Russian invasion when it began in 2014 (take Genadyy Kernes the late mayor of Kharkiv or Oleksandr Vilkul - the vice prime minister under Yanukovich but currently the head of the Head of the Military Administration of Kryvyi Rih). As for NATO expansion, in fact, it benefited Russia: if it didn't happen, the CEE countries would have formed their own defensive alliance and it's fair to say that such alliance would have been much more cautious about Russia, that NATO led by western superpowers that just wanted to trade and, thus, were inclined to look at Russia through rose coloured glasses. Moreover, NATO expansion created at least a formal split between the CEE countries and made putin believe that he could take them one by one (athout he miscalcullated severely). So, it's really appalling to watch western thinkers like JP swallowing Russian propaganda bait, hook and sinker and calling to foresake every value the very western culture has been built upon.

He's just applying normal psychology to the situation, rather than the alternative psychology of a communist mind. This is the key. Many westerners have been duped into thinking that Russia is no longer ruled by those with "ideological zeal and monolithic unity" as pointed out by soviet defector and KGB strategist Anatoly Golitsyn, and today's disinformation framing of Putin, at least towards the American conservative audience, is that he is a nationalistic Christian conservative who speaks out against wokeness" instead of an internationalist/communist reexpanding USSR territory through Ukraine toward western Europe. They are fools that think they know it all. Have you ever seen Peterson talking to a Ukrainian at least one? No you haven't. Because he's afraid to hear what Ukrainians got to say to him. But he would rather speak to all sorts of people who have no clue about Ukraine and its history with Russia. So there you go. Peterson is not God neither he is a Messiah. He fails too.
