Several international treaties have established freedom of navigation on semi-enclosed seas. The Copenhagen Convention of 1857 opened access to the Baltic Sea by abolishing the Sound Dues and making the Danish straits an international waterway free to all commercial shipping.

You do realize that the main reason hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have died is the US and UK interference right? If we lived in a just world then nation states could choose their own alliances, chose their own policies etc. That's not the world we live in sadly so it makes more sense to adapt one's geopolitics to the reality we live in. As such, NATO expansion into Ukraine was always going to result in what we've seen unfold since 2022 sadly. The same way that if Canada or Mexico decided to join a military alliance with China and Russia and allows those two countries to have military bases close to the US border, you can bet your behind that the US wouldn't stand for that. If you think I'm crazy, look back to how friendly the US was with Cuba with the missle crisis. The sadest part is that those in power reap the benefits and make the profits during and after wars and it's the common people that lose family members, their homes, and their lives.

It was beyond frustrating to watch. I understand the arguments the other 2 guests were making and can work with that but Horton was nuts. There was no coup in Ukraine, Yanukovych was impeached and not a single MP voted against it, the ones of his own party simply abstained or didn’t turn up. In the mind of these people nobody has agency, the CIA is behind everything. People cannot choose to join NATO for protection, we force them to. I have listened to enough interviews of people who were on Maidan, the common theme was we were begging for a more forceful American/Western support but it didn’t come. People like Horton pretend to be experts in a field but have a myopic view of the problem, Ukraine since 2014 is nothing more than what Russia has been doing for centuries. He simply can’t accept the simpler explanation that’s it’s in their DNA. I did the rough maths and the Baltic, Nordic, Polish coast of Baltic Sea is approx 5585km, with Russia and Kaliningrad at approx 485km. Agreed, though I think minerals were a major reason for the invasion. They are not all stupid in russia, and the writing is on the wall for oil and gas, so lithium and other rare earths look like a way forward for them.

Under the fields of Ukraine are both oil and gas plus also a good amount of other minerals (mostly rare earths). The Russian oil industry is keen to get some resources in areas that do not have perma-frost and that is near a port that doesn't ice up. The rare earths are a bonus that Russia could move to mining and sending to China. Remember that China is investing heavily in Africa to secure access to resources, but Russia would be closer. Russia would love the to address the trade balance with China.
