This further leading ro WW2, then NATO was developed initially for the threat of Russia, hence the Tsar Bomba nuke, used as a means to show Russian power. Then everything in-between leading to the cold war, where NATO influence kept pushing east, eventually being expanded even further under Bush. The tipping point for Russia was in 2008, when Putin warned Bush if he continues to expand NATO, he will take back Crimea. What does bush do, entices Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO to have a leg up to the Black Sea to push Russia in a corner. America definitely has been asking for war on their soil.

That almost aligns with the russian nuclear doctrine. According to it Russia can use nukes if it is under nuclear attack itself, or there's a direct existential threat to it. The issue is in the interpretation of 'existential threat' though, as in, how vital is Crimea(and Sevastopol in particular) to the country. IMO not to that critical extent, so the nuclear scenario is pretty negligible.

Problem from the russian pov is that Crimea is considered russian territory for about 9 years now. If they lose Crimea and they don't try to nuke a solution out of it that will be a signal to others that piecemeal invasions of Russia can work. Russian soldiers wil then ask a question 'what if 5 years from now Poland invades Kaliningrad emboldened by our lack of reaction to Crimea?'.Or China goes for Vladivostock? Or take your pick as to piecemeal invasions. Nuke powers can be invaded short term and not go nuclear but to lose a war and territory with no nuclear use would invalidate their arsenal in the eyes of the world. The US would go nuclear if Alaska was lost in an invasion and no conventional solution seemed plausible if only to avoid any other future invader getting emboldened. Putin may not have the guts to use nukes but the russian military itself would rather do it than embolden future invaders to go for piecemeal invasions. Heck if we're being honest Russia not going nuclear to protect Crimea would scare other nuke powers into dangerous actions. Pakistan might say 'Russia gave up with no nuke use this will embolden India against us gotta compensate to make sure they won't'. North Korea might think 'if the russians didn't use nukes the americans will be emboldened against us gotta do something to restore our position'. There's a reason why a former Los Alamos head said he fears the entire nuclear balance has collapsed from this war. Nuke powers have nukes to make sure no loss of territory ever happens in a war. They might not use them on day one but losing territory without using nukes would embolden future invasions. That's how the militaries of these countries see it. Its not about how vital x territory is. Its about the legitimacy of the nuclear arsenal itself. That goes to the top.

If what he is saying is true, then this is scary because Russia has already been attacked a few times on their own soil in the last two weeks and also Ukraine is already seeing success in the very beginning stages of their offensive because of NATO weaponry. This is not do or don't. Inaction only postpones what will happen so west needs to make a stand and defend it with ever increasing capability until Ru is out of Ukraine. If nukes start falling it won't be because something was done but because not enough was done. Nukes are the end. Ru knows that. And if they launch tactical ones (oh, they might, especially in Ru territory or Crimea) they are sure there will be dare consequence.

U should read the updated russian nuke doctrine, signed in 2010. They will use nukes in 3 case, if they get hit with nukes, if they will face existential threat, or if they get nato forces on their land.
