May I clarify Efreiter? This derived from Gefreiter, a German rank, since Germany provided much ground instruction, and France, much naval instruction, during the rise of the original Russian Empire. The rank is equivalent to the archaic Italian lanza pezado (patched lance), referring to a cavalier who, with lance broken and horse dead, was required to fight afoot but, by dint of his prior duties, was presumed to know tactics and quick thinking, so he was assigned a few soldiers, as an _ad hoc_ corporal. Indeed, Gefreiter is equal to the British Lance Corporal. Your viewers might enjoy a class on the specialty shoulder board colors of the Russian Army. This was especially useful for finding a particular type of officer without having to poll everyone. Back during the Cold War, I used to tell my people to look for purple. This was for the political commissar, without whose behest, a company commander could not act. Stop him, and effectively freeze the unit until another could arrive.

Good video, exclude one point. Jr. Lieutenant is no longer in use in Russian Army, so Lieutenant is the most junior of officers. P.S. Junior Sergeant and Sergeant are squad leaders while Senior Sergeant is platoon sergeant and Starshina acts as company first sergeant.

The way I interpret the rank of junior lieutenant in the Russian army is to equate it to the that of an Army Cadet or Navy midshipman. In the 19th century a third year Cadet or Midshipman was expected to spend some time gaining Field or Sea experience before returning to the academy for a final period of class instruction before being fully commissioned

NCO are the back bone of the USA military. "NCOs are the doers," the senior enlisted advisor said. "They provide inspiration, purpose, motivation, direction and discipline to the troops they lead, and they are also responsible for the individual training of those in their charge." If there are not battle field communications NCOs are allow to give orders to carry out the mission not to wait for orders from officers.

In the old Soviet Union the senior NCO’s were, usually, career lifers. The junior officers, lieutenants and captains, were conscripts doing their mandatory military service, but had gone through military service preparation courses in college or university. At the end of their mandatory service the officers were given choice to continue their military career or return to civilian life. Also to rise in the ranks it was mandatory to be a Communist Party member. During the heyday of Soviet Union there substantial monetary, tax, living, and social prestige incentives to choosing a military career.

Junior Sergeants and Sergeants are Squad or Armored vehicles commanders. Senior Sergeant is a "Platoon Sergeant", being in fact second in command to his lieutenant. Starshina is usiually a "Company Sergeant", being the most ranking NCO in a company. They usually manage weapons, and other material equipment. Praporshchiks may be in charge of warehouses or other base facilities. As for Generals, there is no such thing as Brigadier General in Russia, there for the top rank for the commander of a brigade would be that of "Colonel". Major General is usually a division commander or XO in some other larger military unit.
@salavat294
@salavat294 2 жыл бұрын
Actually the verbatim translation of “Starshina” would be elder. The rank is similar Sergeant Major in the British NCO Ranks. Usually, these fellows are the grizzled, experienced, battle-hardened, crusty, respected, wise, old veteran NCO, usually on his way to retirement.
@romanzavsegolov4925
@romanzavsegolov4925 2 жыл бұрын
@@salavat294 Yes the meaning is actually "major", older-one, oldest-one. Just several years ago a soldier could be promoted to starshina while serving his 2 years conscription. Now conscripts serve 1 year, while requirements for promotion changed, so becoming a Starshina is not that easy task anymore. As for the video, it was all based on translation without real understanding of what russian army and its ranks really are.

Врешь, хоть звание старшины и появилось ради должности как ты говоришь сержанта роты, но чаще всего эту должность занимает прапорщик или старший прапорщик, а бригадой у нас может командовать и генерал-майор, не до полковника
@romanzavsegolov4925
@romanzavsegolov4925 2 жыл бұрын

Maybe you now understand why I wrote to you to use NATO rank codes instead of DOD paygrades in the USMC video, you can easily compare ranks from any nation to each other. The name can mislead sometimes. I’m a Lt. Colonel in the Croatian Army, the rank is in my language called pukovnik, in many other Eastern Europe armies this name is used for a full colonel, and the rank of the Lt. Colonel is called potpukovnik, it means like undercolonel. In our Army the rank of the full colonel is Brigadir. So that’s the reason I suggested to use NATO rank codes. 2nd LT OF-1b 1st LT OF-1a Captain OF-2 Major OF-3 Lt. Colonel OF-4 Colonel OF-5 Brig. General OF-6 GMJ OF-7 GLT OF-8 General OF-9 5* Gen. Marshal of the Russian Federation is supposed to be a continuation of the "Marshal of the Soviet Union" rank, the most prestigious rank in the Red Army and probably a much more desirable position than most political offices at that time. And - in my humble opinion - said prestige probably only radiated off of the fact that Georgy Zhukov held it. Russian military subaltern practice is much as it was under the Soviet name: non-commissioned leaders of sergeant and below are mainly for accountability, mustering their men and relaying orders and commands. Their authority and initiative are limited because details and serious information will not be entrusted below a certain rank. Not informed of the bigger picture, a sergeant will hesitate, in case his initiative accidentally crosses the purposes of higher authorities. The ultimate reason is likely that, with junior troops trained so little, they may have insufficient discipline not to break and divulge information in a crisis. The sergeant has enough to do, just keeping his troops orderly.

You make a mistake pretty common among people translating general officer ranks. In Russian it goes general-major, General-lieutenant, General-colonel, then general of the army. You do *not* reverse the order when you translate as it leads to people confusing them with western ranks of the same name, when they are not equivalent. Furthermore, the Russian army does not have a professionally trained NCO corps with duties similar to Western counterparts. Russian NCOs are poorly trained and rarely in leadership roles. Most of the things done by Western NCOs are done by the Praporshchiks and Lieutenants in the Russian military.

You sound authoritative without qualifying yourself. Your statements make more sense than the presentation itself. What you said about sergeants makes sense given poor performance in current special operation. I thank you, I think. Will have to do more research.

@qewqeqeqwew3977 Жыл бұрын
@@bobertjones2300 It doesn't. Poor logistical planning in expectation of a 4 days war was the reason for Russian failure in the first phase of war. That is a fault of political advisers, wrong intelligence and operational command. That has absolutely nothing to do with training of low ranking soldiers or anything other people try to read from it. Especially since Ukranian army is much worse trained and equiped to begin with. That starts to show pretty clear in the second phase of the war, where Ukranian army is getting decimated at growing pace in Donbas.

Ok, so, this is gonna be harsh. The breakdown of how each rank used here is frankly terrible, to start this is functionally inaccurate, junior lieutenant isn't a thing in the Russian army anymore....... current event fact check yourself..... "a small group of soldiers" "a larger group of soldiers" "plays a vital role"...... Isn't a description for those who want to know what these people actually do. Those inside military circles can barely tell what you're talking about if we equate what you're saying to what we're used to but that's a vague stretch..... mostly because no...... the world may have come up with similar names for rank but other military forces use their dudes very differently from one army to the next so you can easily get the wrong impression if you go by name alone. For instance how hard the Russian army leans on its junior officers to get shit done is WAY different than the American army..... as in America there is a vast Corps of NCOs both in rank type and structure that forms the spine of our army..... these people are encouraged to act in the absence of orders in the event that their low level administration and decision makers (junior officers) are absent so that a company commanders vision can be executed. That's absolutely not how it's done in the line units of the Russian army. This is one of many, many examples that you need to take into account to get real depth out of your description rather than this be a dry video that wasted the viewers time. Worse.... Those outside military circles will have absolutely no idea what you're talking about because there is a ton of assumption of knowledge in how this was written. You need to either better describe what you're trying to explain, or do research that is greater in depth than a weak wiki search.

When, Tsar Peter The Great began to modernize the Imperial Russian Army, the vast majority of military instructors were Prussians. The Imperial Russian Army was, therefore, organized along the Prussian example, the uniforms jäger field-green. Musketry drills were copies of Prussian drills. So, some ranks are Russified versions of Prussian ranks.

Problem with Ranks, especially in the Russian Army, they give virtually no authority to NCOs. That's why they're getting their behinds whipped by a lesser Ukrainian Army which was trained since 2014 in Western tactics and strategy.

It’s so much incorrect explanation of responsibility of military rank. For example: lieutenant in Russian Army is the first officer rank and possession is as a platoon commander . First lieutenant is using as a downgrade . Battalion commander position is for lieutenant colonel, Major as a battalion commander deputy officer . Demerol major usuals positions for commander of division
