In the 18th century Russia was an immense continental empire and even started to spread out overseas. However, in the second half of the 19th century, after the Crimean War and the Great Reform, Alexander II decided to sell the land that was too far and too hard to control, and it was sold to the US on March 30, 1867.
Later it became the source of gold, oil, and countless jokes and speculations regarding ownership.
In this video Stanislav Chernyshov, the author of "Poekhali!" Russian textbooks and a prominent Russian language teacher, tells in simple and slow Russian the short history of the Russian America: Alaska and Fort Ross in California.
