Russian deserters in Georgia | DW Documentary

In September 2022, Russian President Putin ordered a partial mobilization to deploy more soldiers to Ukraine. But many Russians defied that order and fled the country - as many as half a million to date.
Some 100,000 Russian deserters have fled to Georgia so far. The nation maintains very close, but also rather strained relations with its neighbor - after all the most recent war with Russia wasn’t that long ago. Just how welcome are the deserting Russians? How are they faring in a foreign country after an often-risky journey out of Russia? DW reporter Oxana Evdokimova reports from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

A deserter is somebody who is already enlisted in the armed forces and went away. In this case you are referring to people who avoided being enlisted. A crucial difference!

Hello, I am a russian who fled ruzzia on 23 of september. Since the war (yes, WAR and not "special military operation") started I had been depressed, had problems sleeping after reading horrors of war crimes that russian army was commiting. Those videos and images are imprinted in my mind. I felt powerless and hollow. One of my best friends fled russia right after war started and me and my other best friend cheered him on it. He has money and could do it, but it was not easy or cheap. Me and other best friend had no money. We were trying to save for tickets to somewhere, we were working, but for no awail. A lot of places just closed, many more reduced pay or fire people outright. It was hard to obtain a decent ammount of money. As summer was blooming we relaxed a bit, and it was our mistake. By the end of the summer I had 2 jobs that were not the best but could help me get somewhere. Me and my best friend now reside in Kazakhstan. I heard many stories of good people in Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan etc. Stories of people helping people. But to be on the reciveng end of volunteers was bizzare. People helped us, strangers. Some were giving tea and others were allowing to sleep in their places. It was the first time I had something like this happened to me. In russia a lot of volonterring work is done from position of "Our college forced us to volunteer" or "We were treatened to go to this pro Putin rally or we could be fired from our jobs". I had tears in my eyes when people came and just wanted to help, no strings attached. We were thinking "There is sure must be a trick" but no. We just had been living in a country where you are always suspicious of actions of kindness. We were not expecting any people to help us at all because of what russia is doing right now. But we were wrong. And I am glad we were. Thank you people of Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Litva, Finland and many other countries that helped Ukranians and Russians who fled due to the war! I am okay but many people in Ukraine are not right now. If you can, donate something to small charities and individuals who help regular people on the ground (don't donate to red cross as I heard they are quite useless and majority of work is being done by small teams). (even spare change is enough, dollars and euro have nice convertation rate) Glory to Ukraine, I hope they will be victorious and take their land back. I don't need nor Crimea nor Donbas. Fuck this imperialist bullshit. Fuck the war. And fuck Putin. Хуй войне. Ебал путина в его ботоксное ебало, пускай сдохнет в своём бункере.

Also funny thing. My friend was in mandatory army a few years ago. He still hava not recived any draft letter. None. And me? a draft dodger for 3 years before the war (Pacifist), had at least 2 letters coming to my grandparents house. Another funny thing. Many mothers and fathers were driving their sons to conscription points. Oh. It is not funny, I lied. And as we are taling about lies. A lot of people think that war is going great. All they see is propaganda on TV where even losses and defeats are being presented as victories or minor things not worth a thought. Many believe these lies and many just live trying to forget this is happening.

I am in Batumi (Georgia's second largest city - Black Sea coast). These days for every one person who I hear speaking Georgian on the street, I usually hear 2-4 people speaking russian. Rents have sky rocketed. Georgians are well practiced at judging individuals for individual beliefs, so those russians who are against the war will not find an overtly unfriendly nation. Georgia is rightly known as a hospitable country, and even before the war there were a lot of anti Putin russians moving to Georgia to escape russia. I know a few who got out years ago because they knew their mouths would get them in trouble; they could not stand quietly by after 2008, or 2014... but still, the atmosphere here is definitely more tense than it was a year ago.

I'll tell you more - before the war with Ukraine, half of the Georgians were for Putin. Now I can't say for sure. A million Georgians live in Russia. There are 10 times fewer Russians in Georgia.

Russians have arrived In the Philippines I was a bit surprised to know that some of them have found our province like a guy now started vlogging in staccato English but then he is supported by American and other expats. I was on a bus last week and three young foreign guys one sat beside me while the two sat next to us. They were kinda chatty and a woman asked their nationality when they said Russian there was a dead silence. A part of me feel the pain and sadness from the youthfulness of those Russian brave enough to go into the unknown to oppose the war. Somehow I feel for them. I just wish they will learn something from us we might not be the number one choice in South East Asia I wish them to be happy and feel safe and at peace here.

I have Russian relatives living in the US, they’ve lived outside for many years but feel lost bc they never felt right inside Russia but still love their country/culture. They speak to relatives and struggle to hold a conversation because it always goes back to “NATO is trying to get us” and just falls apart, it’s very hard for them. This ain’t to detract from Ukrainians who have it much harder, just it’s important to remember that there are decent Russians out there many of whom have chosen to leave their homeland and families because of their horrible government. Others argue they should’ve stayed and fought, but most people don’t realize how absurd that prospect is, besides the fact that most Russian don’t have weapons and face and extremely well armed police/national guard, a good amount of the Russian population supports the government so it’s a losing battle, the only chance these people have is to flee.

I live near a North American port city and I remember Polish and Russian ship jumpers/defectors back many years ago. They landed with nothing and no English but they were honest and hard working.... and yes, the Russian guys families treated them like traitors and never spoke to them again. The problems of the cold war were already forgotten by America and Europe. They were all happy to see the countries of the former USSR moving towards cooperation and democracy for the most part. I live as a foreigner in Georgia, and while most Russians who come are doing it because of personal belief, there are of course a number of infiltrators. Russians are known to keep together here, but it causes a lot of friction, as they expect to speak Russian and be understood wherever they go. Life in Georgia has become far more expensive, as Russians splash the cash, and locals cannot get rental property as easily as before. There are just so many, and while the government is happy to take them, the people themselves in some cases feel intimidated. The government is very Russia biased, and with rich Russians coming and getting property and starting work - which may not lead to long term employment - there is tension, especially after 2008. Figures for growth are artificially inflated, so this whole thing could end in disaster for the local population, especially if Russia casts its eyes this way again. There is no clear winner in Georgia, but to avoid friction, I would advise any Russian to try to integrate and not remain in a group - and realise English is the second language of Georgia, not Russian - it is mostly due to repression that older people speak Russian here and not English, as it was forced onto the country. I do apologise if my words seem harsh or unfair, but my experience of Georgia dates back to 2010, and since then, so many factors have seen it decline to what it is today. Understand it from their point. Their in a country and can't speak the language and most don't have family or know anyone. I would stick with my people too until I got acclimated to the other way of life. It's comfort being among you're own kind nothing more. It would be like you coming to my reservation in northern Michigan and being the only wasichu and couldn't speak our Ojibwe language. You would feel like an outsider and would look to find people like you but would not find it here. There many circumstances at play and we shouldn't judge because it's not of their doing!

I think it's the same mechanism that leads so many to go along with the mobilization itself, instead of hiding. The risk of dying seems abstract, and easier to downplay, deny or ignore, while immediate consequences, being arrested or, in his case, being separated from your family, appear more real and therefore a worse option. It's a fallacy, but that's how human brains work, sometimes.

I'm sure he's either already out of Russia, or well on track to be outside of Russia soon. However, being "outside of Russia" in this case most probably means being in Ukraine. While I do feel the irony of dying as a consequence of doing what is normally considered to be the right thing to do (staying close to your family and your kids!), just think of the tough decisions Ukrainian fathers have to make... For Russians, it's like being the brother of a mob boss - it might not have been your choice, but you should still do the right thing. If you stick with your mob murderous family, nobody will have pity on you. If German turns up on a Telegram channel, as a dead body on a picture in a trench, I will not bat an eyelid or stop for a moment. It was his choice to go back, even if a very tough one. At this point in the game they would most likely end up like Navalny, or any other of the host of Russian dissidents who have ended up imprisoned, exiled or deceased! Of what use would that be to Russia, or to Ukraine and the rest of the world? There are still simply too many ordinary Russian citizens who have bought into the Kremlin's decades old propaganda re: the cause of Russia's faded glory that must be restored at all costs, and the West's concerted desire to minimize or extinguish Russia altogether. This was alluded to in the documentary. The circumstances must be right for any serious challenge to uncompromising autocratic rule to be successful. Russian society as a whole (or even in significant enough numbers) just isn't there yet. It has been reported that many of the young men who have left Russia to avoid the draft have done so out of concern for their own well being, and not out of concern over the immorality of Dictator Tin-Poot's "Special Operation". Many of them are okay w/the state of Russian affairs in general, as long as they aren't directly affected personally.

Not long ago someone told me that everyone is the same. That we are walking on a narrow line and you can be pushed one way and you can become the aggressor. At 9:40 I feel so bad for him but family is everything. A good friend of mine who lived in Australia recently went back to Russia. Everyone told him not to, begged him.. but he said his family is there and yes he is scared to be conscripted but his girlfriend is there and she takes care of her very sick old parents. She can't leave them alone. So he had to go back. I will pray for this war to end. Every war is a tragedy and this one is no exception I wish very much for all fighting to cease. Mature, conscious parents would say to their children to escape to better life, not drag them back to take care of them. Life of young children and their freedom is more precious than old people who are sick and stuck in Russia. Thats my opinion. My opinion is also that children are not obliged to take care of their parents when they are old. This is not to be put on adult children, since this is uneven relationship. Parents hold so much power, becouse of chilren being so dependent on them for so many years. They can mold their children and make them into slaves. Thats unfair. These young Russian men are very brave, to leave their country and loved ones behind to feel freedom and democracy. They and the thousands who have fled the tyranny of Putin, will be the ones who hopefully will bring change and democracy to Russia. This younger generation don’t want war. Gedaman should stay in Georgia. The partial mobilization is still ongoing at a low level. It's going to ramp up after Christmas and far more extending then the 1st round. Likely 350k to 400k new blood for cannon fodder.
