true. he needs to match the force of the rotation gained from the friction of the top blades and their inertia to the applied force of the tail blades. which I can only imagine how difficult that is.

Hunters Association You kidding me? 2 tests (of the main and tail rotors separately on the stand with a dynamometer) and a simple equation with 1 variable to match the size of the gear. 5 minutes mental work 4 hours of a wrench swinging. His first success came with the S-2, the second aircraft of his design and construction. His fifth airplane, the S-5, won him national recognition as well as F.A.I. license number 64.[6] His S-6-A received the highest award at the 1912 Moscow Aviation Exhibition, and in the fall of that year the aircraft won for its young designer, builder and pilot first prize in the military competition at Saint Petersburg.[7] After immigrating to the United States in 1919, Sikorsky founded the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporationin 1923,[8] and developed the first of Pan American Airways' ocean-crossing flying boats in the 1930s. In 1939, Sikorsky designed and flew the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300,[9] the first viable American helicopter, which pioneered the rotor configuration used by most helicopters today.[10] Sikorsky modified the design into the Sikorsky R-4, which became the world's first mass-produced helicopter in 1942.

@@tigerlike3642 WTF? Ukraine didn't even exist... Kiev was a part of the Russian Empire, and before that, a part of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth from the 1300s till the 1600s, though most of that time it was controlled by the Mongols. Sikorsky was in no way Ukrainian. He wasn't even ethnically Ukrainian (not even mentioning that the 'Ukrainian ethnicity' isn't even defined since the genetic pool of so-called 'ethnic Ukrainians' are either just Poles, Russians, some even more similar to Romanians than slavs, and others related to turkic. According to the Ukrainian government, the term 'Ukrainian' refers strictly to nationals of Ukraine, it's not defined by ethnicity.) If you want to be a delusional nationalist, you should also remove most of the things that were built by the Russians or Poles, including the university of Kiev, the entire city of Odessa which was built by Catherine II from a fishing village in the Ottoman, and while you're at it go remove all the Polish architecture of Lviv (which is almost the entire city), including the statue of Mickiewicz.

Used to be simple piston engines, mostly around 200 hp. But as the jet age dawned, engineers realised how much stronger a jet engine is than the equivalent piston engine, while also being far more reliable (eventually) and cheaper to maintain in the long run. The first turboshaft-powered heli was American, the Kaman K-225. Turboshaft engines are basically turbojet engines with a "connecting rod" to drive the rotors of a helicopter.
