I could tell you awful stories of how they’ve played ‘hide & seek’ sometimes they’ve found badly injured men, barely alive abandoned. Conscripts generally want to go home and many professional soldiers want to as well, some of the contract soldiers don't. Ukraine follows the Geneva convention and they do not forcefully repatriate those who feel they will be tortured, killed or persecuted. But of course the choice is to go home or stay in captivity for the duration of the war. Ukraine wants to exchange as many as possible, but there is also a benefit to permantly removing Russian soldiers from the field of battle and spreading the information of how well Russians are treated in captivity and that they are not forced to return.

@eliannafreely572514 күн бұрын
I think this attitude enables war. They should definitely be treated well, I don't disagree there. But this insistence on viewing russians as having no personal agency or responsibility is infantilizing. You are not hearing the stories of people who tried to evade service, or to sabatoge if evasion failed. You are hearing them say they "weren't following" political events that were killing children next door. You are hearing them describe indifference, apathy, and ultimately acceptance of going along with genocide. These are the voices of men who were "just following orders". But we've heard that before haven't we? From the soldiers and guards of Nazi Germany. What humanity learned from that experience is that when the protections of civilization fail, final responsibility rests on the man with the gun. No one thinks that is an easy responsibility. But it's difficulty doesn't mean it isn't a responsibility. The west needs to stop encouraging russians to feel like victims. They already view themselves that way, and so excuse themselves from taking action. We need to reinforce to russians that there is an obligation not to simply wash your hands and ignore the rot of your country until it becomes a juggernaut of evil and death.

From Canada: Hopefully a major theme common to every Russian I have seen interviewed, soldier or not, will not go unnoticed. That is not a single Russian interviewed who empathizes with the unprovoked aggression, massive destruction of non-military infrastructure, slaughter of civilians, or shocking numbers ( Russians and Ukrainians) killed. And don’t forget, if they choose, they could easily cut through the blizzard of propaganda by going to the internet. The fact is they do not care about the lives of other people. They care about not bucking the system and/or making money. Their morality and ethics are despicable.
@bnast684914 күн бұрын
Conscription in Russia is mandatory for everyone except those that have money or connections. But, it seems same thing happens in Ukraine as well. You can see expensive cars with Ukrainian license plates all around Europe. I guess you don't have to fight if you got enough money...

I saw several coaches of Ukrainian POW returned from Russian captivity and I was genuinely shocked at their appearance! Every single one looked exactly like the images of prisoners from Nazi Concentration Camps! Gaunt, malnourished and hollow cheeked, with many looking literally like starvation victims. The contrast between the Russian POW and the Ukrainian POW was that one set looked like modern period prisoners that were well cared for and well fed and the other were like Nazi Concentration Camp victims! That Russian POW recieved better care in Ukraine than they did in Russian military service is telling...

Thanks for the informative, balanced reporting, Francis. BTW, US has no conscription (draft) since the end of the Viet-Nam war, thus no draftees. Here we are…. 2014 democratically elected Ukraine government was overthrown by what US administration?
@halojump12314 күн бұрын
Obama openly admits 'brokering power transition' in Ukraine In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Barack Obama acknowledged that the United States had "brokered a deal to transition power in Ukraine," thus admitting to a high level of democratic impropriety. Before we consider Obama’s revealing remarks, and how the Ukrainian people sold their country for a song, let’s rewind to November 2013, when then-President Viktor Yanukovich had shocked western capitals - and, more importantly, western markets - by suspending plans for an association agreement with the European Union. As if on command, thousands of Ukrainians suddenly poured into the streets of Kiev to protest the decision. Such a rapid reaction should not have come as a surprise. After all, a multitude of US government agencies - most notably, USAID - had been operating in Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union, investing billions on its latest "democratic" pet project.
