A lot of learners of Russian make mistakes when using the verbs "останавливаться / остановиться" and "оставаться / остаться". All of them can be translated as "to stay". This video lesson will teach you how to differentiate between them and in what contexts to use one or the other. It will also teach you to use correctly the Imperfective and Perfective aspects of these verbs in the Imperative Mood.

The way I understand it is more simple- Останавливаться refers to stopping when there was motion before. Оставаться is when the status before is no-motion So the first is always related to the moment of stopping, and the second refers to staying where you are (literally and figuratively).

Very instructive. I might note, though, that "after the meeting" can often be "from the meeting," a little closer to от встречи. E.g., "I went home from the meeting" means "I went home after the meeting " Using "from" implies immediately after the meeting.
@ARusPro
@ARusPro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the addition! Would you also use "from" when talking about your impression/emotions after the meeting?
@ForrestRhoads
@ForrestRhoads 3 жыл бұрын
@@ARusPro Yes. "I got this great idea from the meeting." That means the idea is a takeaway from the meeting, a consequence of the meeting. Of necessity it is temporally after the meeting, since the meeting must have occurred first. Кажется, предлоги сложныe в любом языке.

LOVED this!!! Such a comprehensive explanation! it helped me clarify some things about these particular verbs, however I still don't get the difference between the imperatives останься and оставайся. For me it's a very subtle difference... for example, how would I say in this scenario: imagine you and 2 friends have an accident and one of your friends gets hurt badly. And then you say to your other friend "stay here while I look for help", how should I say: оставайся здесь (the action of staying would be in this case a continuous one, until the other action (getting help) is accomplished? another thing, talking about that expression "my heart skipped a beat", I've also read you can say "моё сердце ёкнуло". But it's more colloquial, am I right? would it be synonym of моё сердце остановилось, wouldn't it?? Thanks in advance!

I thought we always use imperfective for negative imperative, but I hear people say "не забудь"
@ARusPro
@ARusPro 3 жыл бұрын
We use Imperfective for negative imperative if it's "general prohibition", and we use Perfective for negative imperative if it's a warning. *Не забывай меня!* (I don't want you to forget me, so I prohibit you from doing this) *Не забудь, что завтра мы идём в кино!* (I'm worried you might forget about our plan to go tto the cinema, so I'm warning you: put a reminder for yourself or something like that) *Не покупай этот телефон. Он не очень хороший.* (General prohibiton: I recommend you not to buy this phone because of its low quality). *Не купи чего не надо!* (Wife might be saying to her husband when she is sending him to the store for groceries, but she knows he is always buying some unnecessary stuff on top of the items on the list, so she's warning him: God forbid you to buy something unnecessary this time) *Не выключай компьютер. Я буду работать.* (General prohibition: Don't switch off the computer because I am planning to start working on it now) *Не выключи случайно компьютер! У меня там несохранённые файлы.* (Warning: make sure you don't switch off the computer by accident. I have some unsaved files there). In all the Perfective examples we can add the word "смотри" to reinforce the idea of warning: "Смотри не забудь, что завтра мы идём в кино!", "Смотри не купи чего не надо!", "Смотри не выключи случайно компьютер!"

I think it's useless to explain Russian grammar in English unless you know as well both languages, most of the time it's not the case, you can save time by doing the whole explanation in Russian, keep in mind that most of the on-line learners do not know English grammar either.
