There are some no-go zones in every major city in Germany, where you probably shouldn't go after dark. I have been in Berlin once and I did go into a city district where a majority of foreigners live and I thought it was pretty safe. You might get stabbed or beaten up, but it's not as bad as american hoods for example.
@kurtwagner6574
@kurtwagner6574 4 жыл бұрын
@@ethhics Thats not really accurate...In Germany there aren't reaaaally such things like no-go zones. There aren't evan real ghettos in Germany like in England or in the US. Of course there are a few "problematic" city districts in Germany but the people there are just poor, alcoholics, drug addicts and rather kill themselves pretty often then beeing violent. For example there isn't such a thing like gang crimes like for example in New Mexico where people shoot each other openly on the streets. Of course organised crime exists in Germany as well like drug dealing and also human trafficing but it's much less than in the US and way more subtle. But I agree that Berlin is looks really sketchy in a lot of areas and is in general a really ugly city, mainly because its socialist history and its large amount of immigrants that live there. In general the big german cities are really not that beautifull, especially Berlin and Cologne. Cologne for example was 95% destroyed after the second world war and the rebuild of the city had to be rushed which led to the city beeing complete eye cancer inducing today. Hamburg however is pretty nice, it's modern and clean. Munich is also pretty decently kept and also is the most expensive city to live in all over Germany so only middle and upper class citizens live there. But in general the mid to small sized cities/towns are the most beautifull like Marburg, Bremen, Münster or Aachen. My favourite beeing Monschau, it's small but really amazing.

Crime and safety in Berlin is just a relative issue. Compared to other German cities Berlin is simply less safe. (Frankfurt and Hannover are No. 1 & 2 regarding crime btw. Source: PKS 2017) But that doesn't make these cities dangerous or unwalkable by night by any means. After all Germany is rated as "highly secure" by the global peace index. Ofc it depends on the neighborhood but even the "bad ones" are safe if you use your brain and don't get yourself in shady situations. After work I used to walk through Berlins drug parks at night and all the dealers and thugs were literally minding their own business. I don't know which right wing morons told you that you're getting stabbed by refugees over here. In my experience these statements come from people who haven't even been to Berlin or Germany at all. I highly recommend reading the statistics on crime in context of immigration published by the federal criminal police office.

I live two streets away from what's supposed to be Germany's most dangerous street, I regularly cycle all the way up it coming back from work at night. I wouldn't do that in some of the "safer" places I come from in the UK.

@Sandrine Sorry to disappoint you, but I´m a Berliner and I made completely different experiences. If a man don´t look like common, and have long hair, a bit colorful, a bit "feminine", you have to be very careful in areas which are called "Wedding"(between Mitte and Reinickendorf) and Neukölln. That´s damn consence from many people in that city. It´s not some rightwing-minded opinion. (One of many )sources: www.berliner-zeitung.de/mensch-metropole/angriffe-auf-homo-und-transsexuelle-in-berlin-li.10888 This "tolerant washing" of Berlin is so stupid. As a LGBT-Person I got disappointed here only and I wouldn´t feel more save like probably in Russia. People can say lot on papers (Gay-Marriage), but the reality is different. What roman said about the guy who told him something about the refugees ist true. What i really like on Berlin is the so called "Mietendeckel", which allows people to stay in their flats in Buildings built before 2013 during prices for rents were rocket up since the last twenty years. But, many people don´t have work here. In most points, Berlin is a fancy facade.

Of course Prague is "mpre beautiful"... Prague also hasnt been destroyed in ww2... But before ww2 Berlin has been way more beautiful. Berlin has been called second Athens by international press back then. And by the way: Prague was German ruled for most of its history and alot of it has been built by Germans. Prague architrcture is completly German for a reason. Only difference is that Prague survived. Prague basically looks like every medieval-renaissance timeline German city. Same for most of Poland and many other east european countries where big German communities have lived for centuries + most of East Europe has been ruled/dominated by Germans for most of european post-Roman Empire history. The Germans obviously influenced those lands and the look of their cities by alot.

@@whynotstayhonest4706 Wtf are you taling about. Do some research before spouting nonsense please. Prague is actually built like most Belgian cities and French cities are built wich is Goth architecture. Germany didn't even have lots of goth architecture. The only main gothic building that i mostly know off in Germany is in Cologne and that's it. And again no, those cities weren't ruled by Germany but mostly by Ottomans since the Ottomans constantly invaded central Europe through Hungary and prague and other main cities were basically constantly being destroyed by the constant invaders ( The ottomans ) and the Papel church wich at that time mostly reigned supreme over Europe. Next time do some research about European history please. Prague architecture is GOTHIC and not GERMAN. Get of your high horse mate and no, they were mostly occupied by the Turks and not the Germans. prenzlauerberg is like one of the most rich areas so i can definitely tell you its not the cheapest got to Lichtenberg,Marzahn or Neukölln, can‘t mention kreuzberg cause it’s getting more expensive cause it beeing in but if u go to kottbusser tor or görlitzer park. But i love Berlin it’s my second favorite area in germany been there think 10 times in the past 2 years but i love my ruhralley too much (it’s like the town where ur living cause it was the coal & industry area of germany but its definitely way more likely to live there cause we handled the economic situation quite well, still one of the poorest areas in germany but also great diversity and very multicultural with like 10 over 200.000 population city and 10 75.000 population city in reach of under an hour by public transportation, which is absolutely great in almost all parts of germamy) Berlin is like the LA of Europe what i quite like about it, a cheap LA. Is it in Russia same that u gotta pay for public toilets

Having been to East and West Berlin back in the 80's when I was 8 years old. My father was in the Berlin brigade at this time, and the 30 minutes that we drove around in the East was terrifying to me. I swear that we were being followed the entire time. I went back in 2016 and it was quite different. We also went to Czeckoslovakia in 2016 along with Hungary and Poland, with a short stay in Austria. The Slovak part of Czeckoslovakia is pretty poor compared to Prague and the rest of Europe.

@I HATE TOUCANS Nobody is giving Berlin a leg up. It generated 136,6 billion Euro in 2017, making it the fourth largest economical hub in Europe. It's debt though is high for a single city with 15 billion in 2018 (Hamburg for example had 2 billion more in debt in the same year). That the Länderausgleich is problematic is nothing new, afterall it's still being debated every few months (and will need ongoing reforms - like everything in politics). And yes, in that regard, Berlin is expensive but to say that it's a "leech" is a rethoric nobody should ever use. This is politics afterall, not some argument about a sports club in a bar. The point is; Berlin itself isn't the problem, it's the government of Berlin that is. And why is that the case? As a centrist, governments need a certain balance. Some liberal reforms, some authoritarian measures, moderate left and right positions cooperating or shifting relativley regularly in order to achieve the best possible rule. The issue with Berlin is that it is being ruled by the left parties alone and these parties are not the economical backbone of the country but the moral one. They understand social inequality, environmental issues and so on but to have a strong econemy, you need liberals (FDP) and to some extent CDU though the later is questionable economically as well - the CSU in Bavaria on the other hand is doing an excellent job in that regard. Despite being way too conservative. Well, in that regard, balance is not everything afterall but the point remains: the issue is not Berlin as a city but Berlin as a government. It's also the result of Berlin being a city state that used to be integrated in the local econemy for centuries burocratically. That would normally balance the left leaning cities with a conservative countryside. Take Bavaria. Many of the hubs of the country are more left leaning but they have to cooperate with the overall conservative population. Berlin on the other hand is what happens when local politicians are only trying to appeal to their voters and are surrounded by their own yes men. A city which is a compeltle mess and should be integrated into Brandenburg and eventually, the Bund (federal government) will do exactly that, take on Berlins debt and end this farce. Sadly, not yet. One last thing about the econemy though; German econonemy is complex because as with all federations, having similar base government archetypes doesn't change the fact that each state is very free in their approach to politics. In terms of the econemy, Germany would profit from more centralized approaches but in the end, to break down the whole national econemy would take ages so let's leave it at that.
