ВРАЧ is a specialist with a higher medical education engaged in therapeutic and preventive activities, and a ДОКТОР is a person with a scientific degree in any field of knowledge (including medicine). Доктор юридических наук - Doctor of Law. (scientific degree). врач-стоматолог - dentist. (profession) The dictionary meaning is, but in colloquial speech, ВРАЧ is often changed to ДОКТОР. If you are advised to go to the doctor (сходи к ДОКТОРУ), it will mean that you are not being sent to a person with an academic degree, but to a doctor (сходи к ВРАЧУ).
