You can pull the opposite axle you're working on up on a block or car ramp to bring the other off the ground, I changed a front car tire by pulling the front frame onto the beginning of a guardrail, lol it was rear wheel drive.

Try using drum brakes coated in Decromet. They are coated for marine use

I don't have that trailer any more but that's an interesting product. It looks like it has to be professionally applied. My new trailer has four wheel disc brakes which are much easier to wash.

Nice job on this taking it apart . I got boat trailer has 1 axle brakes are not working all rusted . Toke master off the front of trailer change to normal hitch. I own a 19 ft boat truck is f150 Ford 5.4 v8 . Mechanic said 1 axle really dont need brakes on trailer . Save your money . Toke it down high way seems ok . Drum making noise . I just thinking do away with the brake system all together . What your up pinion ? I drive on high way 65 . I keep my distance . Would you rebuild whole system over ?

Every state has laws concerning trailer brakes. The HideAway dry weight is 3,500 lbs- add a motor & boat stuff and we probably close to 4,000 lbs. The new trailer is about 800 lbs.- (see my video " New Trailer Launch"). The old trailer was too rusted out to fix- (See my video "A sailboat trailer's End"). The total towing weight is around 5,000 lbs. My F150 4.2 V8 pulls it with no problem- Stopping was an adventure. The boat & trailer will push you right through an intersection with the truck brakes on hard. Our new tandem axle trailer has disc brakes on all four wheels. I would not pull it with anything less. Hope this helps - be sure to view " A Sailboat Trailer's End" it will help you decide whether to keep your old trailer.

I use a heavy duty bottle jack directly under the axle and no brake system really likes salt water its not like you can fish oil your brakes so i guess regular replacement of the brakes on our type of trailers is just a part of life .

I've heard some are going to stainless steel disc brakes. It would be easier to flush. I broke the brake line the other day - the metal one - it was rusted solid. We use the trailer in the yard only so I'll not likely change anything

I store my bot at home so it has to be road legal unfortunately . However the cost of replacing the brakes $230 Is a lot less than paying for storage costs .

Yeah I know what you mean. We've talked about bringing the boat home, our driveway would just hold it, but while the Com Pac 23 is trailerable its not a day sailor. We keep it at our sailing club where we can leave the mast up.

It would be illegal to drive it on highway. However you should also consider if you use equipment on site that is not to spec you might get sued if you have an accident. It would be easier to replace the shoes.

This was basically a yard trailer. I would never have trusted it on anything approaching a highway even before all the rust arrived. The two times we did move it I had an escort and we picked a low traffic time and route with no issues. In my humble opinion it is a waste of time and money to rebuild and maintain a used trailer. I made the video to show what you're getting yourself into. I have since purchased a new trailer directly from Compac- see my video "Compac 23 New Trailer Launch". Thanks for you comments - Fairwinds M

I trust the hydraulic jack more than the cement blocks you are jacking on...

Yep, blocks are placed wrong, should have the cores up for strength.

Can't really grease the brake shoes and run on the road. It was a yard trailer anyway but I was shocked to see how fast it all rusted away. My new trailer has disc brakes on all wheels- much easier to flush! M

Clicked on to learn . not for you to say half way though .. yea it’s a yard trailer now ... lol

There are laws in our state that govern how much weight you can pull with out having trailer brakes. The HideAway exceeds that magic number. Because we do not trailer the boat on public roads, I did not replace the brake shoes. Therefore, it was now an official "yard trailer". The trailer eventually rusted away - see the videos of the old/new trailer - and I learned an expensive lesson. Don't waste your time and money on a junk yard trailer, and when you replace the trailer be sure it has disc brakes. Our new trailer has disc brakes on all four wheels- they are much easier to flush and should last longer. Get a new trailer - you'll sail more and trailer safer! Fairwinds my friend- M

Salt life....

I never understood those salt life stickers, salt, is HideAway's nemesis after all. I once asked a woman whose car was adorned with one. She looked at me like I was from a different millennium. Can't imagine why........
