Rusted of antique tobacco grinder Restoration

In today's video, we'll show you the renovation of an old tobacco grinder.
This grinder I chose for you from the things I want to renovate over time. I have a mill at home for some time, I bought it at auction.
I'll add the mill to my collection. The mill is marked PATENT size 4. 19th century antiques 1859-1873, cast iron grinders were used to produce chewing tobacco. The original patent date is August 2, 1859, ext. August, 1873. It is provided with three foot feet, each leg having an eye opening for attachment to a countertop.

14:10 We use beeswax on wooden parts and wipe them dry
14:54 prepared all parts before assembly
15:11 old holes in the pad to fill a match :)
15:25 and the mill itself is assembled

This man is smart ! He noticed the original white glass enamel and did NOT remove it ! Hurray ! Even though it was damaged, he kept it the way it was. That's how you do a restoration. And I like the paint job, too ! Great restoration.

You deserve it. I once saw another video where a man removed a beautiful and intact (!) layer of white enamel glazing. He replaced it with white paint from a spray can. Just sacrilege. Painful to watch. He did not understand the value of it nor the fact that it was impossible to replace. Now his object lost the last remaining original detail and destroyed some of the heritage.

Great work. I am always interested to see the complexity of these old machines that you restore. It makes me sigh when I think about today's synthetic technology and that somehow the essential arts shown here are becoming lost. In the 40s till the 70s if you bought a car or an implement you could repair it yourself but nowadays you cannot fix anything without the help of professionals who specialise in that item. It is great to see these old items being put together. Thank you for taking us on this trip to memory lane where everything was simpler and less complicated. I know that you use the latest high tech tools and potions but it is satisfying to watch these old beauties restored.

I noticed you did a few things differently. You did not use the blasting for the rust and you also did not lubricate the parts at the beginning to take it apart. That was enamel. But since the storage of the side knives was in lead, it will not be used anyway. It will only be on the shelf as a decoration :)

I'm just curious why you didn't re-ceramic or apoxy f The part that you ground off? Wouldn't that be potential for rust formation if the device is used or an organic substance and residual organics breaking down?

Because "enamel" as such can not be repaired. There are repair cements for enamel, but they are not food! And I wanted to avoid criticism of customers. Moreover, I wanted the grinder to retain a little old look.

A home ceramic repair device is called a kiln. To melt the porcelain/glass you have to fire it at 2400 f. in a controlled oven.

Great job !! Unfortunately one still can not use it, because you forgot to restore the white paint on the inside! Now particles of the damaged white paint edges on the inside will mix with the tabacco, but if its merely for decoration its good enough,

The inside is not white paint. It is fired on porcelain. Similar to the finish on a cast iron sink or bathtub.

Good morning. Great job. I recognized this contraption as I saw it. My uncle who was a great smoker had it from his father. I don't think you tried to put the tobacco leaves in the machine. This type of machine from what I've seen it doesn't cut so finely tobacco. It's more like a pipe. The thinness of the cut is proportional with the spacing between the blades. The tighter the tobacco is the more finely chiseled. In any case it is a real prodigy to have managed to clean the blades. The oxidation is due to the action of nicotine. After cutting a certain amount of tobacco, a thick, black liquid smells quite bad. If the machine is not rinsed quickly after use. The smell is unbearable. It stinks outright. Once the tobacco is chiseled it should be dried for a while. My uncle passed the tobacco in a spinner to remove more nicotine, then dried the tobacco to his liking. I never thought I'd see something like this again. Especially since it was forbidden to have one like that at home. Tobacco cultivation was reserved only for the state. People who had fun doing it at home took a lot of risks. That's how it was back then. Thanks for this video that reminded me of memories. I love your channel. If I was less active in the last few weeks it is because I was sick. So I advise you, if I may, to protect yourself as much as possible from this virus of misfortune that circulates and kills outright. Gabriel (France).
