Definition
Cathodic protection is when the metal you are trying to protect is turned into the cathode of a galvanic cell.
Since most metals oxidise by turning the protected metal into a cathode, you prevent this from happening.
Outline of the Cathodic Process
Cathodic protection occurs by pumping electrons to the metal you wish to protect.
This can occur in 2 ways.
A sacrificial anode, a metal that is far more reactive than the protected metal, can be placed in the electrolyte.
This oxidises and generates electrons that flow to the protected metal.
Alternatively, the electrons can be provided by a DC power supply and be forced to the protected metal.
This is called impressed current protection.
The electrons at the cathode cause any of the oxidised cathodic material to reduce and return to its original state.
Applications of Cathodic Protection
Cathodic protection has a range of uses.
Protecting ships and docks from corrosion by the sea.
Protecting some steel roofs from corrosion from the rain.
