@@sasukeffx2167 Katanas with medium long blade are true Katanas. This is a Wakizashi. And those Katanas which are longer than usual are "Nodachi." Generally, every single edged curved sword can be called "Katana" in Japanese. But to be precise, this isn't a true katana. True Katanas are 1 or 1.5 feet longer than this one. Those which are 1.5 feet more long than true Katanas are called "Nodachi" or "Odachi." Furthermore, these are historic weapons which you are talking about, not some newly created fantasy weapon by yourself which you can call wharever you like.

A katana is a single edge sword. Even if it is short, the wakizashi can be considered as a katana. Not all katanas are like the uchigatana or the tachi

Bro u made an art piece, but there technical faults here that I would like to highlight. Firstly dont make sword too much curve. It should have a depth between half to 1.75 inch. Secondly don't remove too much steel material from the handle core. This will make the sword less stable and more prone to accidents. Thirdly, if you are ever making a katana don't make the tip of the sword too angular instead give it a smoother transition from the main blade (Ha), in practical this increase swords shock absorbtion and smooth action when hitting a target.

Brother, I am telling you this because you have the talent and ability to make a super blade from scrap metal. You can hardly call this a replica of a WAKIZASHI (short sword).KATANA is far away I am sorry. But you can make it for sure, you have the sense. Katana is all about tradition and perfection. Every single Katana Bears history. They must be hand-forged like you did, this why each of them is unique in its own way. Your Katana will bear your history. But you must follow the rules and the method. Please follow the below points: 1. Length: A katana is longer than your knife. The length of a KATANA is measured by the length of the hand. The exposed part of the blade should be 3-5 inches longer than the length of your whole hand. 2. Material: The metal must be folded at least 10-12 times. The folded steel blade is the most basic and "must-have" feature of a KATANA. You also must combine multiple layers of high carbon and low carbon steel for durability and sharpness. You need to use the clay quenching on the edge side of the blade. A single swing of katana should cut a man clean in half, but your knife can barely cut two mere water bottles. 3. Handle: It is really great you made it a full tang. But there should be two handle attaching pins instead of one pin, which you did. You don't rivet the handle permanently. You should be able to detach and attach the handle as easily as you breathe! 4. Scabbard: The tip of the scabbard should be round, not pointy. The sword should fit in the scabbard just right. Not tight, not loose. But your scabbard is tight. These are only some highlighted points that I know. However, I am not an expert and there is much more to it. You can find a lot of authentic Katana-making videos on YOutube. Study them and I am very much sure you can make a REAL Katana in your style! An authentic KATANA, but not from Japan will be a spectacle for sure. Thanks!
@hassuntzu6523
@hassuntzu6523 3 жыл бұрын
No need to fold the metal multiple times. Those were the old days when metals needed to be folded in order to make it tough. These days spring steels such as the one used in this video don’t need folding. They are very tough
@leogamers7309
@leogamers7309 3 жыл бұрын
@@hassuntzu6523, In that case, I think, (It is only my thinking, please correct me if I am wrong), yous should fold the steel only for 2/3/4 times just to bring the Damascus texture on the blade?
@Karsliyu
@Karsliyu 2 жыл бұрын
@@leogamers7309 As no one answered, a late reply. Folding might make sense from an aesthetic point of few but not from one of performance. Even if welding the balls and case of the bearing together might have turned out interesting... we don't know if the steel types would be fit for this purpose. What you're doing if you fold modern steel is introducing impurities, variation and possible weak-points where it is not necessary. Folding was done to knead out and evenly distribute impurities and variation of bloomery-steel, this was done in many parts of the world prior to more industrialized steel production. (e.g. roman and viking-age swords used a similar steel production method) You begin with an inhomogeneous blob of raw steel and fold it to create more pure and homogeneous material. If you fold already homogeneous and pure modern steel you are moving in the opposite direction, it might end up looking more authentic, but it's actually faking a different production method at the expense of mechanical performance. It might be more aesthetically pleasing but is less honest. Deliberate use of different types of steel visible on the surface for aesthetic and mechanical properties would be called pattern-welding, this was however not really done in Japan and is more a European thing if applied in very complex and elaborate fashion. Most modern replica katana actually fall into this "fakeing" category, modern pattern-welded tool-steel pretending to be folded bloomery-steel. .. there is also a lot of confusion created by the therm "damascus"-steel being applied to describe almost anything with a visible pattern on the steel surface, may it be wootz, folded or pattern-welded.

Yeah, there's a lot wrong with this. The handle isn't fitted right, the Habaki doesn't wrap the blade. It's too short and it's not tempered. The big thing for me is that it doesn't slide into the scabbard easily which suggests the radius is wrong. I think there's a bit of a failing here to understand just how complex a katana actually is. The different parts of the blade should be tempered differently to create certain parts which are more flexible or rigid.
