How to remove rust from inside a motorcycle gas tank

It is a German manufacturer called "Tankdoc"
this video is just an example of how to do it (or not 0:44 ) :-D. If you choose this product, I absolutely recommend working exactly as described in the manufacturer's description.
TOOLS: Immersion heater, hairdryer, bucket, whisk with drill, funnel, thermometer, watering can, canister, rubber gloves, safety goggles... patience and time! ;-)

I hate tank liners of any type, they are trouble and generally, there is no need for them. If your tank is rusty shake nuts etc to remove the loose stuff, fill with Citric Acid dissolved in hot water and leave for about 24 hours, empty, dry as you did and put some oil diluted in petrol swirled about and leave till you are going to use it. once you start using it the fuel and fumes prevent it rusting. If there is pinholes, they will be underneath the tank, clean to bright metal and use body solder to seal them. That's a nice bike you have I'm not sure the make but guess its German, I own 3 german bikes. NSU Quickly, BMW T75/5 and NSU 500OSL ex Luftwaffe I need to know more about and hanker after a '50s-'60s Puch 175 - 250 split single. Though I don't like tank sealer you did a great vid for those that do and I have subscribed and will check out your other vids. Thanks.

Love the video. I didn't coat my tank after removing rust, which was a bad idea because it has started to rust again. But at least my bike runs now. I'll have to redo it completely in couple months.

Any tips for removing the petcock without breaking anything? Just bought a really hard to find tank that's not terrible maybe 7/10 but the petcock is just asking to break

oh that's really delicate. Maybe soak first with WD 40, or something similar. Then maybe warm up very carefully with a hair dryer. Sometimes heat can do a lot.

I had this both in my BMW R100 gastank (rust) and in my 2002 Harley Dyna gastank, rust AND lose paint/coating from the inside. That made the rust removal useless, coarse the coating kept coming lose and clogging the filters, lines and carburator. The old inside coating didn't dissolve in either Aceton or Thinner. I had to let the inside clean, sandblasted and coated by a specialized company. Huge pain in the . . . and costly. The specialist told me, that he gets this coatring problem more and more with newer motorcycles, due to the Bio-Ethanol in E10 gas. He advised to us 98 gas without Ethanol.

Wow 8 days drying.....use Red Kote tank sealer......much better ......on ebay for $24 dollars or $34 at O'Reilly's .....no mixing....1 can .....you can reuse what comes out of tank.... All tank sealers are not equal......vinegar is so much better to use in the beginning to clean.....safer ....

I used "Tankdoc" from Germany, It consists of a degreaser granules and a rust remover granules that needs to be mixed with hot water.

The paint coat inside will peal in few weeks due to petrol and get stuck in fuel filter beneath the fuel guage ? Otherwise all Auto manufacturers would have done this !

the two component paint is very thin right after mixing, and can flow into any bump. After drying, the coating is elastic so that no cracks can form.

the plugs were packaging waste, just happened to fit. But you can also try to find a screw with the right thread pitch.

Tank liners are the devil!! Never have or will put one in any tank I own. A shot of Isopropyl alcohol in each tank of fuel and you’ll never get a rusty tank.

Josh Max because 99.9% of the time they don’t adhere to the inner tank, and over time flake or peel off and clog up pet Vick’s, carburetors and everything else in the fuel system.

This coating has been in my tank for more than a year, so far nothing has peeled off! I am not paid by the manufacturer, I am not telling anyone to use it! I had no choice but to have a coating on my very thinly rusted tank.

@@JoshMaxPower If your tank is just slightly rusty, just remove the rust and don't seal it. If you park your motorcycle for a long time, fill the tank as full as possible. So there is less oxygen in your tank.
