Restoration of a rusty hammer from T.O.R., Sweden with some cool Nordic engravings. See the awesome recovery and outcome!
THE NORDIC HAMMER
This is a Swedish made TOR hammer from 2007. I got it from a barnyard flea market here in Sweden very cheap for only 1$
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I disassembled the hammer shaft from the head by removing a metal wedge and then I sandblasted the metal. I grinded the hammer and removed the old T.O.R. logo from the side of the hammer head. I decided to harden the metal and at the same time blacken the metal with oil. I did a fine little Nordic engraving on both sides of the hammer.
The Engraving is a Celtic Shield Knot and a symbol of protection. This knot was placed near sick people or on battle shields for warding off the evil spirits or any other danger. Now it is on my hammer!

I have a genuine question. What idiot decided to name this type of hammer " ball-peen"? I mean, a was just chilling and playing fallout 4, and lo and behold, i come across the most majestic of things. The ball peen hammer. I'm going to have a feild day with this for years to come.

Nice restoration - I particularly love the laser engraving / etching you did! If you are going to actually use the hammer to hammer in nails, you don't want the striking surface to be polished smooth - you want it rough / scuffed up eg 60 grit random orbital or something. Grips the nail head when striking.
@donnaer

Didn’t know that….in metalsmith ing jewelry, we keep the faces as clean as possible so as not to unnecessarily Martha metal. So I guess it depends on how you will use the hammer. Good to know.

I agree. I was really hoping he was joking when he said he was removing it. It kind of seemed like a joke at first right? Maybe i just assumed that because original logos/Decals are always a plus when doing restorations. I was kinda sad when he removed it. I think the hammer would have looked better left with the original logo instead of that big Celtic symbol. I mean on a cheap junk hammer who cares but if that brand is of value and truly vintage its a sad waste.
@drys007
@drys007 3 жыл бұрын
@@daviddaddy I know, my feelings exactly! For me it's not even most important if the brand is of value, although the hammer was probably old and the logo was the only thing that could ever allow to date it. Now it's pretty but it has lost all it's history and identity, so the same result could have been achieved with a cheapest ,brand new mass produced chinese hammer. I also hoped that he would at least incorporate the logo into the new design, ie. etch the decor around it on that side. Anyway, a lot of good work put into this, but some of it was wasted.
@FallenAngelHiroko

It's not really restoring if you change it. But that's a matter of semantics. And replacing the logo takes away from it too. It's a case of "less is more". Still like your videos.

My son restored an old hammer that his grandfather used that we found when cleaning out my mom's house. It's a Craftsman from the 50's. He kept the logo though. After watching, had to sub.

Awesome....of course! But the real attraction (for me) is your work table which looks like a hand-crafted, European (German/Austrian/Czech), turn-of-the-century (1915) work of pure art and utility. Another restorer, Radick of Veronika just re-finished one that is very similar. Best wishes and stay healthy my friend.
