I have a 1972 Harley Electra Glide that I bought from the police dept (ex-police bike) in 1979. It had a lot of rust in it. I poured some mineral spirits in it, about half a quart, if I remember correctly. Then I put in some medium size pebbles and shook it all around for about an hour or so. The rocks knocked the rust loose, then I cleaned it out with some fresh mineral spirits, emptied it and poured in some Kreem (didn't take much) and shook it all around and never had a problem. I didn't get the kit - only need a small bottle of it. You did a good job, though, of getting rid of the rust. Nice video!

I've used that method before with nuts and washers. It works but doesn't really get rid of all the rust, you're just knocking off the big flakes with that. Vinegar will actually dissolve the rust. My biggest concern is that I could have a really thin spot and after it dissolves the rust I'll have a pin hole in it.

Spirit vinegar is even more aggressive. I bought 15 liters of the stuff to de-rust a 91 honda cb1 tank. Don't forget to get as much of it back into the containers to reuse another time.

Do you know the ratio you used for the baking soda/ water mixture and how much rubbing alcohol you put in the tank? Trying to restore a 76 Yamaha and im worried about getting flash rust.

I'm using the apple cider vinegar in the tanks of 3 79-85 honda atcs. The vinegar took a majority of the rust out of the first tank I tried but there was still some big spots of rust in the bottom. Any ideas on how to further remove the rust? I was just considering a tank sealer at this point. The information I find is all over the place.

If you believe you were patient enough with the apple cider and it didn't come clean, I would probably go to a tank sealer kit too. At least your tank is now prepped and ready for it. Thanks for the like and subscribe.

I think electrolysis is the go, lotsa vids out there. If ya wanna keep with the vinegar try adding ball bearings or bolts and shake it around

"Metalprep" (phosphoric acid) will clean the tank. No neutralizing and no flash rust - treat the inside and after draining out and drying will be ready for coating with a good quality fuel tank internal preservative and you're done. Why aren't fuel tanks internally coated anyhow...? (dumb assed question!)

Please get a decent LED flashlight, the dark spot in the middle of the light from the flashlight was driving me crazy. I know it was probably a Maglite and could be focused but LEDs work so much better especially for videos. Thanks for the video anyway, I have a Honda Interceptor that ethanol fuel did a number on. My tank looks way worse than yours and I'm not sure what to do with it. I'm going to try the vinegar because although I have a quart of Evaporust I'm thinking it will be a lot of turning over and moving it around, then will it rust where I just turned it from?

It went back on the bike and it's been good ever since. No more problems with rust and I never used the tank kit but I'm keeping it just in case. Apple cider vinegar was enough, just probably not as fast as the tank kit.
