Күн бұрын

Broken and discarded, then found by Jim's grandson, this 1930s Swiss
A.S. watch is now ready for a new lease of life. Without any doubt this
was the most difficult restoration project so far.
A. Schild S.A. was a watch movement maker operating from the 1890s
through to the 1970s.
Adolph Schild began producing watch movements Grenchen, Solothurn after
1896. Schild produced many different movements and became one of the
largest movement makers in Switzerland by the 1920s. Schild movements
were used by many manufacturers in the 1950s through 1970s, including
such familiar names as Harwood, Fortis, Enicar, and even Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The quartz crisis of the 1970s hit Schild especially hard, as
inexpensive Japanese and quartz watches cut into the market for
volume-produced three-handed watches. By 1979, in order to survive the
Japanese onslaught, Schild merged with ETA.
What made this restoration painful is the fact that there was not a
single component that was not either affected by rust, broken, out of
shape or simply worn out. Thanks to two other AS554 donor movements, the
end result was luckily a success.
Make sure to watch until the very end to see what's coming next!

I'm having a career change and starting to learn historical Horology (two, three, four hundred years ago) in my mid fifties, and it's fun, relaxing stuff to do. Though I do concede I need more vision assistance than I would have in my twenties :) Cheers

Awesome job Nick. When the watches are this far gone, do you ever strip or shear screws during removal. At 1:54 it looked like that screw head might have sheared off? Around 2:19 kind of looks like the shaft remains in the hole.

I hate to be a know it all, but for a master watch maker, he should have known that in most Swiss watches, that screw has left handed treads. He turned it the wrong way and broke off the screw. I was thinking he's going to break that off if he keeps turning it that way. I really wanted to see how he got that out.
@StevenKeery
@StevenKeery 3 жыл бұрын
@@bauertime : What was the purpose of making some of the screws a left hand thread? I found that curious.
@bauertime
@bauertime 3 жыл бұрын
@@StevenKeery The winding rotation of the wheel gear is always tightening the screw. Even though the gear is keyed on the mainspring arbor with a square hole, it's just an extra measure to keep the screw tight. Since I've opened my big mouth about this, I've noticed it's probably not 90% of these screws, but it was one of the first things I was taught to watch out for when taking a watch apart.
@StevenKeery
@StevenKeery 3 жыл бұрын
@@bauertime : Thanks for the reply. I only noticed it on two of the screws and after a few moments thought, I felt it must be for the reasons you have explained. A fascinating process all the same, although kids nowadays seem to use their mobile phone to tell the time and watches seem to be going out of fashion. I had a number of old watches years ago that I threw away as being uneconomical to restore. I wish I had kept them now, as I have seen some beautiful restorations online. It must be a job of great satisfaction, knowing that a watch you design and create will live on for generations as a family heirloom. Not much you can say that about these days in our throw away society. Thanks again for the info.

A little tip when dealing with rusty bolt and screws. After spraying penetrating fluid loosen the screws quarter to half turn and tighten it back up again. Then remove the screw. The fluid will reach the threads and tightening it will force it further down. You might have to repeat a couple of times for the ones that are stubborn. Saves from stripping the threads on both ends.
