Yeah, watching Jon smite the NotThem definitely awoke something in Martin. The one main conflict is, isn’t Jon one of them? He’s just as monstrous, feeds off the same fear, brought about this world, and is just as terrifying to *everyone* else. So, did these people truly have a choice if we presume that Jon didn’t have one? Anyways, yeah, not!Sasha sucks and Jon’s great, but it’s interesting to think about!

Jon only has 5-ish direct victims I believe and, er, non-consentually brought about the end of the world. Considering how he’s also been marked by all of the fears, I think he’s felt enough suffering to balance out any he’s caused (other than the end of the world, which was really just Elias/Jonah’s doing-it’s like saying that a robot that is actively trying to resist the inputs of the controller is responsible for killing someone, not the one controlling it) I suppose you could say that that robot analogy is also true for the other avatars, but is it really? They get joy out of killing and hurting and harming and tormenting. They don’t resist. It’s evident from other avatars (eg. Daisy, who was going to die before the Hunt took her over) that it’s possible to keep some of your humanity. Jon and Martin are trying their hardest to not hurt innocent people. This is a really good topic for a moral debate though

I have been picturing the group getting lost in the chaos outside of reality and running into certain comic book ferocious sadistic spiritually empowered avatars of guilt--the intellectual ones who were seeking the power of forgiveness, so less violence prone. The conversation I imagine would include an exchange of origins, and discussion on Jon's guilt. Because he feels guilt, he's not really a target for these guilt monsters. They look for those who don't feel guilt, and become embodiments of your own buried conscience. Essentially, Erinyes, or Furies. (Which would be interesting to contrast that one Jewish psychologist fan's analysis who compared Jon to the scapegoat sacrifice.) The thing is, feeling guilty over something you had no choice in, is a way to avoid feeling guilty about something you *actually * decided to do. Our true sins are rationalized and accepted. Still, Jon is trying. "There's but three Furies in all of Hell, but in a great man's heart three thousand dwell"

Ok so I thought my biggest fear was The Dark because of how afraid of the dark I am in real life and because no sentence has caused me more fear and lost sleep than "The Blanket Never Did Anything" (I now realise it was the Fear itself protecting that guy so maybe I'd be fine because I'll never stop being scared lol) But The Buried is so much worse. It's a sadistic entity maybe more so even than The Desolation. The other powers kill or break you eventually, after their toying and tormenting. The buried uses Hope as a weapon to keep you just sane enough to suffer for every moment. It's a brutal endless torment and it's lack of Avatars makes it feel even less fightable. Also, Helen is so fucking funny and her relentless friendship with Martin no matter how much it annoys Jon is amazing.

This episode is SO good. I hate the Buried. Describes so much of, er, my situation at work and life, I suppose. I think it may describe a lot of people's, actually. So afraid of trying something new, going outside the predetermined path, even though that path crushes you. You fear whatever else there is might be worse. So we don't dare to dream or dare or try. We just are content to let ourselves get crushed while hoping something better eventually happens to us. The escape appears.

I was wondering about hope, just now. Hope is generally perceived to be a good thing-fear’s antithesis, even. But if there exist Powers that embody other feelings besides fear… if there is an entity such as the Hopeful, I am not convinced it isn’t either allied to or chained by the Dread Powers. It is easier to accept tragedy in the absence of hope; hope is what prolongs the terrified’s suffering. The stronger the hope, the more terrible the fear, I reckon. It is clear, at least, that these awful worms’ fates would be less sorrowful (or, well, in so far as one immeasurable amount of suffering can be measured up to another), if they didn’t see that beacon of skylight.
