A Wikia article had this to say about that other band: The Beatles were a Rutles parody band and the only one recognized by Rutle Corps. The Beatles are comprised of John Lennon(Nasty) Paul McCartney(Dirk) George Harrison(Stig) and Ringo Starr(Barry). All The Beatles, just as the Rutles, were born and raised in Liverpool. Although being praised by Dirk, Stig and Barry, Nasty has been quoted as saying "God do those idiots have nothing better to do." The Rutles considered suing the Beatles in 1966 for copyright infringement but were too tired that day.

More of a pastiche than a parody, I'd say. If it's a good thing in its own right, rather than solely a piss-take, then it's a pastiche. But, yeah, The Beatles did some decent stuff too.

I thought it was "I'm dancin' with Samantha Peel, cor ain't she surreal!" Samantha Peel was, of course, the early character name concept for who eventually became "Emma Peel" on 'The Avengers' (or was it 'The Offenders'?), Dirk and Nasty's favorite TV show in the 60s. Stig hated it, though. He used to turn the sound down on it and say rude things.

To be honest the first time I watched the Rutles I didn't really get it because it seemed to be a very accurate simulation of the actual Beatles rather than a parody. Didn't help that the actual Beatles were actually more often eccentric/weird/surreal than the Rutles.

I was going to the University of Cincinnati. It was either late and my freshman year or The beginning of my song my year in 1978. We had a new thing called a video room in the student union building where they would show a video on 3/4-in tape for the week. And one week, it was The Rutles. I got hooked immediately.

Saw The Rutles a couple of months back at The Komedia Bath. Still brilliant! Neil Innes is a genius. He was arguably The fifth Beatle, the seventh Python... and certainly a dog (called Bonzo).

A little known actual fact: one of the actual policemen who is actually dancing on the actual wall of this actual video is actually one of the original actual policemen who actually danced on the actual wall of the actual Magical Mystery Tour movie. Actually.

Apparently John and Yoko pissed themselves laughing - especially at the "shower scene". Paul, however, was not amused. Especially since Linda thought it was hilarious. (According to Eric Idle's commentary on the DVD).

Paul maybe had guilt and shame for patterning "Penny Lane"(1978) after Ther Rutles's "Doubleback Alley"(1967).
