RV Life - Tackling our Tacky RV Window Valances - Maintenance Monday

RVing to Alaska

6 жыл бұрын

We tackle our tacky RV window valance boxes in today's Maintenance Monday video series. When Gary was away from the coach one day Stacey removed the window shade covers over our dining room table to see just how much light was lost with these boxed valences. We learned the view was dramatically reduced on both sides and the top of the window. We find a way to open up the views and share with you how we made this simple DYI no-cost modification.

Another name for those window treatments is cornice boards, at least the top pieces.

I’m just going to remove mine and put up the blackout curtains instead in the color I want because I don’t like those ugly balances all over my rig

Were the dual roller shades attached to the wall, the cabinet or the valance box? I'm getting ready to remove mine and wondering what to expect.

To the balance box which was connected to the cabinet and the wall. It was a pain to remove but so glad we did.

@@RVingtoAlaska thank you for the quick reply. The back ground scenery in your video looks like Arizona. Were you filming down by Quartzsite by chance?

Thanks for watching. We are far from the desert this year. We moved to Alaska this year and today was our record lowest temps living in the motorhome still at -20.4°. Enjoy Q… we love it there.

Looks good! I think I Am going to do that to our Fleetwood too. I used to make those for windows in homes back in my upholsterer days.

My old Prowler camper looked better with just a valance curtain hung in place of the box.. it made the window look bigger even though it wasn't... Thanks for sharing your idea with me... love you... Be blessed... BBE..

We had valances like that in previous RV and I never liked how the blocked the window, which is why our new RV doesn't have any. Your solution definitely helps that issue. We went with the big bus style windows with the modern clean-line look so no valances. We don't care for earth tone decor in a RV and prefer light/bright designs.

Nice job guys, the valance definitely looks better, think the vertical trim on ours covers a fairly large gap that could actually be seen through by someone walking around the outside of the coach. Cheers, dave

That’s not a ya na. It’s a hell ya. That really came out good. I am wondering if the the shade clips had good solid wood to bite in to. The tos of the valance are usually the backer for the shades to bite. And the valance has a backer inside the cabinet bottom to hold it up in travel. Those side pieces are really just two thing. One decor. And two. When the shares are down. And some one is sleeping supposed to help keep the sun out of the unit. O by the way my names kevin. I’m friends with John and Laura and I’m work for Jayco’s factory service department as a tech. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures as you travel along.

Hi Kevin! We were actually just talking about you earlier today! All good talk too if you were wondering. The roller shades actually have a better mounting than before. They use to only bite into the part Gary took the saw too and then the whole roller box setup bit into the cabinet with only 3 screws. Now it’s held up by six screws.

Pau Hana Travels I love that. I might actually use this on our product if the customers have the same complaint. Of course that’s custom work which they frown on. But if the customer has an issue I see no reason we can’t do this at work. I might even look at our valance in our camper and see if ours do this as well. I know some of ours are just low because of over head cabinets. What I really like about our sides on our valances is we have the pleated shades and they mount at the top of the valances and the bottom sides. Easy to remove tha while valance and do what ever I need to the window.

It wasn't easy but there were screws that held the entire box assembly to the ceiling (cabinet). Once I found them all (I believe there were 4 total) it came all down together box, shades and all.

Too funny :) At 2:13 - Stacey begins, "Gary is going to retrofit (Gary, hammer in hand). At 2:20 with hammer in action, Stacey inquires, "What have you doing here, dear?" 3:20 - Stacey, "So this was a great way... because this (project I started) needs to be taken care of now." 5:47 - Stacey now embracing, "I just want to thank you for..." 5:50 - Gary, "Yeah, yeah, yeah" Hmm, I'm hoping Grace doesn't come across this video - Gary you set a high standard and are going to make trouble for the rest of us guys!
