The converter.... That information just saved me, just in time! I'm so glad I caught this video today. I have been looking for information like that and haven't seen it. I just bought a lithium battery, but didn't have the right cables so waited to hook it up to the house electrical (RV "house"), my cables are coming in the mail today, I was gonna hook it up tomorrow. I just checked with my RV shop, and the guy was very stern about the importance of the converter change, though he quoted $300-400, not your $70-200. Really wish I'd had this info sooner, definitely something that needs to be mentioned in more KZbin videos. Again, thank you for saying this and saving me!

Maybe I missed it. Have you talked about a battery isolation monitor (BIM) to prevent you from over taxing your vehicle alternator?

Consider this, The expense is NOT WORTH IT ! You WILL need : 1. New converter =$400 avg + Labor =$200 x $400. 2. 2 - 100AH lipo batts = $1200-$2000 + labor =$150-$250 3. Tax + S&H =$225 4. Battery monitor, Why? So you can see the battery’s ‘state of charge’ from no more than 30 feet away? You can’t change the parameters on the new converter. Total system upgrade = $2800 to $3200 to only double the run time ! This does not include the device ($750-$1000 ) for allowing your truck to charge the lipo’s $3200 = 1000 gallons of gasoline = 1500 hrs of run time on the Onan(approx 75% load) or 4 hrs run time per day for an entire year. Shall I go on ? BTW : 1 - 100 AH lipo will start your Onan but you’ll still need to replace the converter

What about the truck to Trailer 7 way connector with power from the truck, does the higher voltage from the trailer affect the truck batteries/alternator at all?

I wish someone would answer this. Do I need to Cut the 12v charge wire from the truck to the Trailer? This would prevent alternator to lithium battery connection. Burning up an alternator or the 12v wire in the 7way.

@@aolvaar8792 I found the answer finally. Yes this wire connection needs to be eliminatedon the rv side to prevent certain damage to the vehicles alternator. Need to wire up a DC-DC charger for vehicle charging.

I installed Relogy DC to DC charger. It prevents feedback from the lithium batteries to the trucks alternator, protecting it. It also boosts the incoming voltage on the 7 pin to charge the lithium batteries. Apparently, it monitors the batteries state of charge as well so as to not overcharge, or to draw to much power from the alternator. Does it really do all this.... I can't tell.... but if it does it's worth the cost.

I went to LiFePO4 and will never use anything else. DOD on a regular battery is just not worth the constant worry of what you have used. AGM typically gets 80% DOD but there is still that concern. I have a different brand but to each their own choice.

Why do people believe that you will damage a AGM if you go below 50%. Those batteries only have decreased cycle life. It is damaging the battery. They are a deep cycle battery. The UPS industry does full discharge and has been for over 30 years.

I agree about deep cycles being able to discharge below 50%. It’s actually more like 80%. But with any lead acid or AGM once you go below 50% charge your voltage is actually around 11.6v. The newer 12v appliances don’t like that. Lithium holds well over 12v until it’s discharged to 5%-10% charge. Also, there’s something called Peukerts Law. Lead acid and AGM have internal resistance and the further they’re discharged the faster they discharge more. Lithium iron batteries don’t have internal resistance.

Lipo’s are simply NOT needed by 98% of RVrs ! (7:10 - 7:35!)“ Boondockers “ are the only customers that would ever need this kind of reserve power. They didn’t even mention the upgrade needed to the tow vehicle (dc/dc inverter). Yes, most NEW hi-mid$ to hi-end$ RVs have lipo compatible converters.

I think you mean the converter. Your current converter will actually charge lithium batteries to about 80%. To get the rest of the way you’d need a new converter.
