the material the velcro is porous so water gets between the glue and the fabric. then the wind blew it off. the Shiney side being distorted is a effect of the atmosphere corroding the metal in the material. it will spread as you go. I reccomended getting a carport like structure leaving 12 inches between the rv and the botom of the roof. that's for air circulation and allowing moisture to evaporate.

I live in Las Vegas, it's very windy sometimes and super hot from May to October. I am thinking of using thin plywood sheets on the roof with thin rubber ribs between and harnessed by cargo nets.

I think the reflectix would have done a great job keeping the heat in for the winter. But Im unfamiliar with California winters. But the ware is very interesting thanks Pippi!
@fishhuntadventure

No. It will reflect heat, but with radiation merely laying it over the roof will conduct heat not insulate. If it were on the inside it would help retain heat.

You can get the old stickys off using WD-40. That will dissolve the glue and you can pull them off with no damage to the rubber roofing.

Being in maintanence, I've found that Goof-Off works far better than WD-40, especially for baked on glue.
@discerningmind

+Vader1957 I wouldn't use any product containing oil or Goof-Off. It could absorb and permeate the roof material and release the adhesive holding the roof on. Better just to leave these.

Just an FYI, there is a product called ' Cool Seal ' ck around it is a rubberized roof coat for RV's and it is silver. Easy too apply good for sound barrier too lasts a long time. When time to re coat you just fix any areas that need it and put another coat on.

I'm guessing you will be going back in with solar which will be pretty cool and I'm sure you will do an excellent job with it too. that az sun can do amazing things. I am sure you know but there is thermo paint made for rv roofs which makes a big difference in your rv... I was at an auction months back where one of the trailers they had painted the white thermo paint on the roof and sides and even though it was over 110 that day inside the trailer it was actually cool. no ac on people going in and out. not sure the cost.

Back when EPDM came into vogue, I think Liquid Roof was the only thing that was guaranteed to work. It is a 2-part epoxy, very expensive but I found it to be very effective. Coverage is about 40 sq.ft. per gallon and I only mixed a small amount at time for spot repairs.

Very smart review. I wish I'd known of this video when I asked you how you liked it on your old one. As for covering look for a UV stabilized product. That's what killed your reflecting cover. Good idea not to pull on the EPDM, you're spot on. Love your ingenuity!

Thanks Pippi! I've decided (zone 5/6 for now) to delete all my roofing penetrations, run the necessary ones out the top of walls, and go over the entire old epdm with corrugated silver roofing. I'm hoping for a comparatively maintenance free roof that has really good reflectivity for IR. Will use a minispit if necessary for cooling, though I personally tend to just make it with nature's flow as of now/ even in the humid 110F heat index PA summers it's not hard to find shade or get cool.

Interesting idea to use Reflectix on an RV roof. If you are concerned about holding moisture under the insulation, maybe Aluminet shade cloth would be a compromise. It is a knitted fabric with shiny aluminium looking stuff on one side that allows free air movement through the cloth. The highest shade factor is 70%, which would not be as effective as the solid Reflectix but the big advantage is that any rain or condensation from your a/c unit would evaporate right through it.

Dynamat Works Better is Similar but one Side Sticks I commented on Part One The Dynamat wont come off even if you drive on the Freeway! But Its Fine to Get the Knock off brand on Ebay the Entire Sheet Sticks on one Side And The other is the reflective side with the insulation in between the sticky side down but you would have to use a Scrapper to get it off It is designed to last the stuff you have does not.

not sure but they have a tech line or even ask if anything can be applied to the aluminum side to prevent discoloring I used it on the fuel tank above it on the truck bed underneath 5 years ago still looks new after washing over the years some water inevitably got on the Dynamat but shows no affects other than dust/dirt

Pippi, If you look around there are companies that seal roofs with a high density polyurethane foam. It is vary tough stuff. 1 inch thick is equal to 7 to 8 r insulation level. Seals out leaks like nothing else. It is used on stadium domes like the one in New Orleans. That dome stood up to hurricane Katrina (140-150mph) winds with only small damage to a 10 foot round spot on about 20,000 square foot of roof that is totally expose to wind, rain and anything else that nature can be thrown at it. Your RV would be unsafe to drive in 40mph winds combined with a travel speed of 65mph. That foam can handle that though.

If you run some tape along the middle joint the wind wont get underneath and tear away the side above the lower layer, also to save some coin on buying that material, go and visit a kayak reseller they have all watercraft shipped in that type of bubble wrap, it comes in 4'x10'to16' tubes that when you separate the seam turns into 8' wide, they usually end up in garbage dumps, in spring they get large shipments so you might walk away with some free rolls ,you just have to carefully remove the packing tape I insulated my entire furnace room using it (as seen in my post on your site)

I do not know if you know, there is a product called Snow Roof coating. It is rubberized and its made for RVS all you do is get a 5 GAL buckket for about $160.00 and just use a roller and put a couple of coats on and it will do what you need far as insulation and it will protect your bladder so you will not have to do a costly repair later on. The stuff is easy to put onb and lasts a long time

When I saw your 1st video on this I Knew it would be short lived as this product is not for exterior use.I hope you can recycle it so it don't end up in the landfill.I have used this material on the under side of my van camper roof where it is not exposed and it worked very well. Maybe you can re-purpose it inside your RV.. Look into a silver coating for you roof. I am sure someone makes one approved for a rubber EDPM roof.I think you are smart to let the velcro adhesive wear off as you might damage you roof.Thanks for the update.

Just a suggestion depending on what you are planning to do next summer: Is there a way to incorporate battens with the reflectix so you get a little more thermal protection and they will allow the trapped water to evaporate away? Your roof needs at least a coat of liquid fiberglass for RVs or even a new rubber membrane. That rubber membrane is expensive but really helps to resist the extreme temps of cold or hot. insulates & keeps you from having leaks. if you don't treat that roof will eventually leak.

I saw your first video and wasn’t quite sure if I missed how long it took you to put that up? I’m watching your second video and wondering how long did it last before the storm blew it down? Looks like the Velcro adhesive is not able to take the conditions of the roof. I wonder what the temperature rating is of the Velcro adhesive? But if it holds to the roof it wouldn’t be a temperature issue it would definitely be a manufacturing defect of the Velcro and it’s adhesive. The manufactured bond should never be the joint to fail in your application. I would notify them and ask for a refund on the purchase and find a better supplier. One other solution would be to bond the two sections together using a different method to piece them together. This way they could also support each other.

from just what I saw. I would get a canvas tarp slightly bigger than the rv. and glue and sew the insulation to the bottom side. then cover the roof. and tie it down . I haven't used this on such a large scale but it works very well on small scale. but a canvas tarp that size isn't cheap. I guess a cheaper plastic tarp maybe the silver ones would work. and around the AC. you could put something under it so it would cover it. but leave plenty of air circulation. or do it in multiple pieces. and just leave a gap. I know this video is a little old. but id like to know how it worked out. did you use it again?

I am not sure if this was posted, was there a huge difference in the inside temp after it was cover? Also difference in cooling cost?

As a fulltime RVer, do you move around or typically stay in one spot? When you move, is it easy to roll this insulation up? Also, what state is this in? Are you in one of those oppressively hot states, like Arizona? Thanks for the video.

why are half the comments on here telling this girl to use solvent on a rubber roof?.....the velcro doesn't need to be removed....and just because it bothers you .....trying to remove it with any type of solvent will weaken any type of adhesive under the barrier....and then you end up with bubbles ...soft spots and holes

I didn't think this material would last very long, back to the drawing board. I would go with interior insulation panels. Could be pricey though.

I have used reflective paint much like this on trailers in the past. www.amazon.com/COATINGS-KST063600-20-Elastomeric-Coating-5-Gallon/dp/B001B1CHLW We often get hurricane force winds spring and fall here in Missouri. Hard to keep the roof on. Let alone insulation.

Pippi did the reflectics material help with the insulation in the RV? Was it cooler in summer or was there a savings in utilities? Thx!

Cooler and savings for sure. I only have it up in the summer :)

You need to drop the head liner and put it between the roof and head liner away from the weather. This will block the radiant heat radiation and provide insulation R value, double bang for the buck and its intended usage.

+Pippi Peterson Go the disco look then and hang it on the inside. ;) I have that in my Jeep hard top to block the radiant heat here in Texas. Now the AC will cool it down on the number 2 setting. I am pretty sure you can drop the interior ceiling for installation though.

It is far better on the outside as a reflector as Pippi has done. That stuff has no insulation value at all. It's R value is zero, aluminium foil is a super conductor. Watch my insulation video for the facts.

If it helps - I used the industrial Velcro but also sealed the entire edges with industrial duct tape. After 3 years I thought I would tear the roof off trying to move my solar panels even though the tape was thread bare it still held so hard.
