*IMPORTANT NOTE* ~ This solar charger is not exactly the same one that I have. Unfortunately the one I have is not available on Amazon anymore. I think it's outdated because it only has USB and Micro USB. Most of the newer solar chargers have USBC! I did some digging, looked at reviews and such, and this is the one that I personally would purchase right now if I didn't already have one!

This is something that I, as a resident in a mobile home park that has no shelter, have to deal with every spring and every summer. I want to stress for those out on the road not only pay close attention to the weather, but DO YOUR HOMEWORK ahead of time. Some places may have public tornado shelters that are open 24/7 before the fact; the vast majority do not. Because I live in a mobile home park without a shelter, I have had to do quite a bit of research and the results are not encouraging. Many residents here assume they can go to the police or fire station when the siren goes off. That is not correct. Our village fire station is not set up to handle large amounts of people and it has no basement. The Office of Emergency Preparedness says they will open a shelter after the tornado has passed; otherwise there isn't any in the entire county (Van Buren, Michigan). Scout out potential sheltering sites, keeping in mind that if you choose something like a truck stop you will be dealing with others coming off the highway as well as locals who don't have anywhere else to go. Not trying to scare people, but, tornadoes are a fact of life and tornadoes do not keep a 9-5 schedule, they can occur any time of day or night, so you need to know what to do and where to go when that alert goes off at 2-3 AM. I am a certified NWS weather spotter who so far has only witnessed one tornado and I can tell you that when the NWS or anyone else says to take shelter and not try to go out and look for it, they mean it. Tornadoes can be rainwrapped. They can be transparent to the point of being almost invisible. The condensation funnel may not reach all the way to the ground or may not even be present so that the only indication that a tornado is on the ground may be a dust swirl. If you are on the road a lot during tornado season I really recommend taking NWS Skywarn classes; the schedule for your area can be found on your local NWS website, or they also offer these classes online (there are several excellent KZbin videos). Now, as for getting weather information, I am sorry, but I do not like The Weather Channel. I think they tend to sensationalize things. They are better than nothing, but still. For the big picture I like Ryan Hall Y'all and Evan Fryberger. For more local, because I live in Michigan, I turn to Michigan Storm Chasers. Other states may have their chaser/spotter groups. And of course the NWS, but I have learned from watching Ryan and Evan and MSC that often they are more aware of what is happening than the NWS, at least they seem to get the word out much more quickly than the NWS. And again, I cannot stress the importance of taking storm spotter training (Skywarn); especially with small spin-up tornadoes, YOU may be the first one to know what is happening. So don't rely solely on someone else telling you what is going on. Radar is wonderful but radar has drawbacks and there are documented cases of tornadoes literally slipping right under the radar and striking a community without warning. Finally, we all know that the NWS says you should not ride out a tornado in a mobile home or RV. We also all know that the NWS says you should not outrun a tornado in your vehicle. But, what you may not know, and I got this straight from the horse's mouth so to speak, is that if you have to choose between staying in a fixed mobile home and trying to flee in your RV or vehicle you are better off choosing to flee in your vehicle. Make sure that if you do you know where the storm is and what it is doing. There is an area around the tornado that chasers call the Bear's Cage. Believe me, you do not want to unknowingly enter the Bear's Cage. Chasers have been killed doing so. If you cannot see where you are going, do not continue in that direction!

@@MakingMyAbodeOTR Thank YOU for letting the RV/camping community know about the dangers of severe weather! You are so right when you talk about the locals. At the last Skywarn training I attended the representative from the Grand Rapids NWS said that one of his office's biggest fears is an outbreak like Palm Sunday 1965. He said "if that happened today the death toll would be in the hundreds." I was only 8 years old when that happened and it really made an impact on me. Here in Michigan we are long overdue for a really violent tornado outbreak (the last F5 was in 1956, the last F4 in 1977). So people hear tornado warning and they go meh, just another little EF0, EF1 spinup, nothing to worry about. But even those can be deadly under the right circumstances. Stay safe out there and be prepared, be weather aware.

I work with people on the west coast. We don’t get a ton of watches/ warnings but when we do I always send the meme with “Taco time!” “Tornado watch is like having all the ingredients in the fridge for tacos” “Tornado warning - WE ARE HAVING TACOS NOW!” Great tips! We have a dog and absolutely just assumed I could bring him with us- good to know to think of alternatives! We recently were in Houston and decided to get in the road early. 15 minutes later we got a tornado warning for the county we had just driving out of. Definitely a different feeling of being in an RV vs a house. Stay safe!

Most important Evacuate EARLY. I am staying in a mobile home with my family of 6 and 22 pets the last 2 years as we build a home. We used our local storage place as the place we could go to in an emergency, place had 24 hour access and a pull in cement garage so we could just pull in with animals and family and wait it out in there, plus we had access to our stuff in storage…clothes, etc in the event we needed things. Now that we are moving slowly into our house we just leave VERY early when any bad weather is coming. Never underestimate storms!

@@MakingMyAbodeOTR Yes! The last few days around the country have been awful for so many. We are in PA and weather blew in here fast. Our oldest son lives in a top floor apartment up high on a hill, so when weather turned..it was pretty scary for him living alone. He didn’t even realize there was a tornado warning till I called. His phone never even went off even though he has notifications turned on for weather updates. We told him, again to buy a weather radio like he grew up with as its what keeps us updated too.
