Route 66 is also know as "the mother road." It's history has helped shape that of America. Commissioned in 1926, it was the first highway to link Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 became America's main street. No longer necessary for cross-country travel, it has been replaced by interstates with no stoplights and no special places of interest, just a way to get from point A to point B in a hurry.
But as I've always reminded travelers, you don't learn anything on an interstate. Route 66 is special, it crosses the rivers, plains, mountains and deserts of eight states. Come along for the over 2,000 mile ride as we explore it's drive-inns, gas stations, museums, kitschy roadside attractions and most importantly, it's people. Americana at it's finest! This video shows its importance, so we shouldn't take it for granted. Us oldies but goodies are gettin' up there. You touched on a lot in a short time and did it well....thanks for the ride along.

I've just got back from America, me and three friends from the uk did Route 66 it was the most amazing holiday we ever had. Did as much of the original road as possible. The people you meet in America are great. We planned it really well and saw so many great things. I don't know where to start to tell anyone how great it was. Looking at this film reminds me of how it seems like a different holiday every day it's such an amazing place. The motels are really easy to find and are very good. It would be a great holiday for families too and is a really safe place to drive. I'd recommend it to anyone. The place is great the people are amazing and I've never felt safer. And I want to go back!

It took me some 46 years to see most of 66 since 1968. Some of the places that are abandoned buildings & ghost towns were still kickin' the first time I went through, since I40 was still under construction. It's a sad thing to see in my old age...

This was great. It helped me remember fond road-trips with my Grandparents down the colorful busy path. There was a home made of beer cans and bottle caps. There were colorful shops with all kinds of oddities. Thank you.

you forgot to mention about Merrimack Caverns that all the cave scenes from Lassie we're shot there as well as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn where they tried to escape from the Indian among countless other movies. gotta be nice inside the caverns though the Rangers have the Authority to beat you amongst the head and shoulders with their flashlights if you touch any of stalagmites or stalactites and they tell you that.

Teamster Pride I don't see my comment as negative, but simply rather factual. We were amazed at how deserted Route 66 was. We drove for 30 minutes before seeing another car traveling in the opposite direction. We never saw another car driving in the same direction. We did expect to see some old gas stations at least, but it was nothing but miles of open prairie blocked off by barbed wire fences. Not really negative, but more of surprise. I'm not sure negativity is a baseless emotion. It's hard to believe we have nothing to complain about while we still struggle with issues like pain and death, but I won't say it can't be baseless. I don't play the 1971 Super Lead much anymore. I'm now playing through a 1970 Fender Bassman head into a 1967 Gretsch Super Bass 2x12 cabinet. For effects I use nothing but a Boss ME-50 and my main guitar is an Ibanez SZ320. Everything is stock and original. I paid around $950 for everything. I've been playing nearly everyday for nearly 40 years. I'm in a local club band. I'm not proud or ashamed, but I do get a kick out of seeing jaws drop when musicians can't believe I get all my tone from such cheap gear. From Wicked Game to Sweet Child Of Mine, I've got the tone to die for.

Yeah it would be cool to go back in time and see 66 in it's peak. I've been asked to play in a few local bands but with my job I couldn't be reliable so I just play for fun and jam with friends. I think a club band would actually be the most fun. No grind of the road and non-stop touring.

In June I was able to drive from just west of Oatman to Williams (in a red Mustang convertible no less). Now I'm seriously thinking of flying to Chicago, renting another Mustang convertible, and doing all of old 66. I didn't realize so much of it was still out there. I noticed you totally ignored Kingman in this video, I assume it's shown in the longer version? I stayed at the El Travitore in Kingman and it's exactly the kind of place I like to stay on a trip like that.

I love route 66. I live in near Phoenix and always go up there in my RV With XR650R mounted on the back. if you take your dog traveling with you make sure to stop and Seligman and Williams in Arizona they are the most dog friendly towns I've ever been to you can walk right into the restaurant with your dog. I've been there so many times people know my dog's name but they don't know mine yet they just say oh yeah that's Thor the pitbulls owner. lol I plan on moving to Ash Fork soon. where you can buy 40 acre's for less then $20k. Just a few miles from Route 66.

Enjoyed the whole tour, perfectly explained within the narration! Love to see such Historical places are still intact and are telling their own good ol' story, and the best of all is that some (if it's not all) Museums and Memorials (or Historical heritages) are free to visit! That makes this trip even better to do as a Tourist! Wish I could make that trip one day, would propably be the best trip to take throughout Historical roads in the world! And just what the sign in Oatman, AZ says: the Ghost Town that refuses to die! And that counts for every single village or building among the '66! One more question though, are you ever coming to Europe? Germany is full of Historical (Medieval) places like in the Eifel, surrounded with many Schlosses (Castles) which are left intact. Could also been found throughout Europe like Ireland, Great Britain and Scotland and also in Belgium and France (in French language named a Château), but especially more up North in the Nordic Countries like Finland, Norway, Sweden and Luxembourgh. It's really a must if you want to learn a bit more about the Medieval times, you should also come for the beautiful green nature, which the forests are surrounded with only (black) spruces and pines! Just like in Canada, but even greener! If you want to learn more about the Roman and Germanic Culture, you should visit Italy (especially Tuscane), where the infrastructure of that time is in it's full glory! Also for the weather and silence (sleepy mountain villages) a must for a Tourist.

That segment features the best campgrounds, dinners, museums, etc.....that I found. John Holod Hi John! I just did the same! From Chicago to LA and back, but I did it in 23 days. It was a challenge not because of the distance, but because I was filming every day and editing videos which as you can appreciate is very time consuming. I wish I had found your video before I set off, it would have helped me plan my itinerary.

Is Barstow near Death Valley, and close to Calico Ghost Town? We travelled through there back in October 1981, heading for Vegas. It was a truly magical experience, one I will never forget. I loved the desert landscape, so far away from the dull cold UK. I'm listening to "Horse with no name" on the radio right now, and it takes my mind back to that trip.

At this point you might want to consider just putting the entire video on utube. You might make more money than selling the dvds. Other utubers have the entire trip on utube. Just a thought if no one is buying the dvd. I plan on doing parts of the route 66. Like I said, I have seen pretty much the entire route from several different tubers.

John Ratko You must have missed Oklahoma. 66 goes right thru OKC. Downtown is amazing. It's all been rebuilt and is a mix of old and new with the ball parks, Bricktown and state capital. Motorcycle owners groups and clubs ride in and out of the area constantly to play on Route 66 several hundred miles in each direction. I'd call OKC the Mother Lode of the Mother Road.
