Susan and I have been RVing for over 5 years now, and we have tried many ways to get internet while traveling in our RV. After a lot of trial and error, we are finally ready to reveal how we get internet in our RV while traveling.
We found some great RV internet solutions that give us reliable internet speed and connectivity while we travel around the country almost full-time.
If you need full-time RV internet access or you are a full-time digital nomad who needs a good internet connection, we have some great solutions. And some of our internet solutions are great for weekend RVers, too, who need a good signal to stream TV shows, KZbin videos, or games.
0:00 Intro
3:17 Starlink Roam
15:12 T-Mobile Home
20:43 Verizon with Winegard

Thanks Mike and Susan! Y’all were the first KZbin channel we subscribed to after getting our travel trailer April 2022. We replaced the cardboard StarLink box with a plastic box that holds everything just like the cardboard box - From The Container Store 61 Liter Premium Stacking Tote … Clear 17-1/2” x 27-1/4” x 12-1/4”h. It works great and the lid locks down (unless I forgot to stow the antenna properly 😜)

OMG thank you so much for this demo on hooking up Starlink! I was just trying to figure out an easier way to hook it up without going through the slide. I have a class C and had settled on using the upper bunk window-BUT now I realized I have a nice little hole where my electric cord fits through the bottom of the cargo area (in order to keep the door closed) and I totally can hook it up through there! I will just need to figure out the power. I am going to play around with it as it seems that I could just run an outdoor cord from the 120 outlet on the side into the cabinet...:) At least temporarily. Thanks again!!!!

Great Video, thanks for sharing. I have both StarLink and At&T service with a Winegard. Both have served us well. I put my Winegard in a cabinet with a cigarette lighter plug. this makes it accessible and easy to reboot. it works extremely well in the cabinet and does not need to be on the roof. This also simplified wiring it. It works so well that when we park it inside a full metal storage building with the doors closed, we still have great internet service. when there is no cell service, we use the starlink and we connect the Winegard to it like it is the park wifi and all devices connect to the Winegard.

@@RVBlogger the T-Mobile has been good from Wisconsin down to New Mexico! We did have issues with it while at the Balloon Fiesta during the day, and guess it was because of the large amount of people there clogging up the cell towers. That is a great idea! One of the other problems with a Winegard with a Verizon chip is when you change the Verizon plan mid month to get more Gigs you have to power down the Winegard after changing your plan online. Great video. It's nice to hear from real life experiences rather than what the manufacturers want you to hear. At the beginning of the video you talked about upload/download speeds being important to you, but you never mentioned what you were getting on each of the three options. Can you share? And while you never said it, it seemed pretty clear to me that you were excited about TMobile Home as being your favorite. Yes? Keep up the good work. Patti and Johnnie

Thank you Patti and Johnnie! Sorry we didn't share speed test values. Unfortunately they are different everywhere. Today we are in Orlando at a site where T-Mobile isn't a great signal. People have actually moved to a different site to get a better signal. Our Starlink is 129.7 upload and 10.9 download. I have upload several videos to KZbin with no problem. Our T-Mobile was only 10.8 U and .3 D. If all we had was T-Mobile we probably would have moved too and got a better signal. I do love the service with T-Mobile but it does have it's limitations for service. Please feel free to ask any other questions. Thank you for watching Our Internet Solution video and commenting!

Great question. How is your internet service at home? Both Starlink and T-Mobile can be used at home or on the road. So there is the possibility of eliminating a cost at home when you are traveling. We love that we can pause Starlink and we love the affordability of TM. A lot depends on where you are traveling and how often you need internet. There is no contract with TM so you could certainly try that first and see how it works vs the $600 start up cost of Starlink. Thank you so much for your support. We truly appreciate it!@@johnniedonnelly1334

Interesting and helpful. Thanks! We are newbies, and definently not full timers. So far we have relied on our AT&T hot spot on my cell phone, mostly just to check our emails. I wonder how that compares? We recently stayed at Ft. Davis Mountains State Park, and currently, there is no internet, wifi, or TV signals available in the campgrounds. Supposedly available after January. We sat and read the owners manual. ;)

Excellent video, you're right Starlink is stupid expensive, but I was unaware it could be turned off and back on. Thanks for sharing. Verizon update: We have an unlimited Verizon "home" Internet in our RV just like your T-mobile setup. The Verizon box is a cube a little fatter than the T-mobile tower, and about 1/2 the height. And speaking of 1/2, it's $25 a month. See you on the road. 😊

We have a Verizon MiFi jet pack that works pretty well and we don’t have to climb on the roof. We can also use it in the truck but our T-Mobile Home Internet covers us there as well, in the truck. The MiFi cost $111.00 which I think is still too expensive for 150GB (and throttled back as well). Like I said though, no climbing up on the roof. -Pete & Lisa

Adding a Peplink B One to your Internet hardware list would be ideal it sounds like after watching your Video. This would allow you combine all of your internet sources in the RV into a singular router and have a singular SSID that your devices would then connect to. You can even prioritize which connection to use as the primary and if needed bond multiple connections together in a SpeedFusion tunnel for connectivity resiliency.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze for us. If we suddenly loose internet while we are working it's not a big deal. And it rarely happens. We either have a good signal or if not. And if not, we just switch to another of our sources. Easy as can be.
@RonHarrisMe

If you are paying for all three, you should combine them. You would get some awesome speed, and it would be uninterruptible Internet. If one service goes down, the other two would continue to run without missing a beat. It might be a bit costly upfront, but it's a one time setup. Excellent topic!! Would you recommend Starlink to those us who are NOT in need of the Internet to run a business such as your KZbin channel?? As you say, $150/month is A LOT OF MONEY! Just as a ballpark estimate... What percent of the time when you are on the road was Starlink the ONLY method for getting online (ie., when neither T-Mobile or Verizon worked)?? And if you didn't have your online business, would Starlink be worth the price FOR YOU? Thx in advance for your answer. ❤😊
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! All great questions! We love Starlink and it is very reliable but....depending on where we are staying it isn't always necessary. Places where it is hard to get a cellular signal it has been a blessing! When we were in the mid-west it was 100% necessary for us. In Colorado we couldn't even make a cellphone call. Starlink allowed us to make a cellular connection. On the east coast not as important. TBH we use T-Mobile more than Starlink but that's only our current situation. The nice thing about Starlink is that you can pause service. So if we find ourselves in a dead zone we just reactive service for that month. I think if we were not remote workers we would probably just use T-Mobile. The lack of need for internet and the cost might rule out Starlink. (But my answer could change if my location changed 🤣) Hope that was helpful. Thank you for watching our internet video and commenting!

I don't think you can pause T-Mobile. It wasn't designed for travel so I doubt that is something they offer. But you could check with them. Thank you for watching our Internet While RVing video and commenting! We appreciate your support.

So as i see it you spend $150 a month for starlink, $50 a month for t-mobile, and $20 a month for Verizon in a winegurd system, is this correct?
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 2 ай бұрын
We actually "pause" our Starlink account. We only turn it back on if we are in an area where the T-Mobile signal is week and we might have to upload a video. But you are correct that would be the cost if all 3 are up and running. It's the cost of doing business🤦‍♀️! Thank you for watching our RV internet solution video and commenting. @@RVBlogger so what are the reoccurring charges? I have been living in a camper for 11years. I have a newer camper. And 15 days from full time on down the road. And starting a you tube channel. Phone only to start and see where it goes. My first trip is to Gilbert AZ for used solar panels. I have bought lifepo4 batteries, and solar controller, charger, inverter. All in one. So I am thinking, I have AT&T, wife has Verizon and I am looking at the T-Mobile for internet. I hope it works. I don't want to pay all that money for an Elan Musk Monopoly. Is T-mobile good for the south west? New Mexico, Airazona, Nevada Texas?

@@On-down-the-road I can't speak for the southwest area unfortunately. We haven't been there yet. But in my opinion I would start out with T-Mobile Home and see how the service is before committing to Starlink. You are not bound by contract and can cancel at any time. I have heard people say that T-Mobile Home reps/sales people say you can't use this service as a nomad but we have not had any issues...yet!

Tried to get mobile and it is not available in our area. We want it for our rv

That's a bummer! Would you only camp in your area? In other words, would you travel to locations where T-Mobile is available? If you only camp close to home it wouldn't be a good option until TM is offered in your area but if you are a traveler it might still be beneficial on the road. Hope it comes to your town soon. Sadly, T-Mobile Home won’t be allowed for travel after May 8th. However, you can purchase their Away plan for 110 or 150 a month and they cannot be used in the home Sad!

Yeah, we feel Starlink is the better play once T-Mobile is no longer available. You can pause Starlink when you aren't using it and save some money.

TMobile told us we cannot get this because our home address is not in their service area. They also said we cannot use this away from our home ☹️

Why not put the T-Mobile sim in the device in the roof?
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 2 ай бұрын
Great question. The T-Mobile SIM card would cost $50/monthly for only 100G of data or "internet". Where as with the T-Mobile Home we pay $50/monthly for unlimited internet. We chose to keep the Verizon SIM card so that we can have up to 3 internet options in the event we are in an area with bad coverage. Not to mention, Adding and removing a SIM in the Winegard requires getting on the roof and installing the card, not something you want to do on a regular basis. Hope that helps answer your question.
