Seen a chain ladder this last weekend for the 1st time and a few weeks back, dropped my S2 flashlight for the 1st time as well, about 50 ft . it survived with a few scratches. Interesting to see that ladder indeed a rare find
@TomandJulieMineExploring2 жыл бұрын
That ladder is pretty useless. I don't think it was actually the original miners who put it there. I've dropped pretty much all the things I carry at one time or another. Light, camera, radio, air monitor, water bottle. I try to tether as many of those as I can now, but you still end up dropping stuff. I dropped my $120 flashlight down an 80 foot shaft while coming up on rope. I didn't realize it until we got to the next mine we were checking out and couldn't find it. We went back, hiked back up to the shaft, rappelled down 80 feet and found it. Then of course you have to jug back up the line for the second time that day. All because I didn't tether my light. Thanks for the comment, Ken!

On the bottle, I may have a maybe. I'm thinking of old bottles of pop. They had a soft marble, some type of wood, in the neck for the seal. They also came with a stick to poke into the bottle neck in order to drive the wooden marble down to open it. Mabe the rope or string was attached to the stick in order to stay with the bottle? Cool mine! The chain ladder looks like a much newer addition. Quite an impressive climb up Julie! Thanks for bringing us along Tom and Julie!

We've seen bottles like that in several mines. Some of them had oil in them so that might be a clue as to what they were used for. Many have been wine bottles. That ladder is definitely not part of the original mine. Thanks for the nice comment and for your input on the bottle, William!

I can understand, after watching Julie try to work that chain ladder, why that is the first one I have ever seen in a mine. You think they would have cut those bolts off flush to the nuts, great way to slash your wrist open and bleed out trying to get back up it. On your comment, Tom, about the lumber in the mine being almost without knots, the old timers thought lumber with knots was stove wood! Salvaged an old warehouse in Portland Oregon for the wood in it, the rafters were 30 feet long 3x12's and all clear vertical grain Douglas Fir !
@TomandJulieMineExploring2 жыл бұрын
That ladder is pretty bad. Those bolt ends were ready to shred your forearms if you weren't careful. The lumber they used back in the day is nuts. You can't even buy that type of quality today for any price. That's funny about the wood with knots in it being stove wood. I don't doubt it. I hope that wood you salvaged got put to good use. Maybe this one's on a return roster? I've noticed a lack of miner graffiti from most of the recent videos. Maybe up in the vast stopes of this one? I can imagine they did a bunch of digging above that timbering? Seeing the collapse makes me think so. Nice portal guardian 🦎

Thanks for the great comment, Rick! I think we will return to this one to at least check out the shaft we skipped. There must be some big stopes up above, maybe we can check those out, too. There were so many we gave up on that pretty quick, and were just shocked by the amount of previous human activity, in the most desolate places. Many with no roads, perceptible trails, nothing. Is this place on usgs?

I always wonder the same thing. I can understand an animal living near the entrance to a mine, taking advantage of the shelter while still being able to go out and forage for food and water. It's another thing when they are so far into the mine, and down a vertical shaft, that it would be impossible to regularly go outside to get food and water.
