I remember the mini-van breaking down on our family vacation. We were on I90 in the middle of nowhere South Dakota. And this was back before everyone had a cell phone. (Like early 1990’s). A tractor trailer pulled over to see if we needed help and him and the other trucks were able to find out there was a repair shop 20 miles down the road. After limping the van there for 2 hours we spent 2 days at Wall Drug waiting on parts and repairs. Overall it turned out to be a pretty cool hiccup in our trip.

I lived near Death Valley for 4 years and it felt like it got hotter every year. It’s one of the reasons I had to leave because I couldn’t take one more summer. It truly was a spiritual and beautiful experience living there but it’s too close to hell hot for me. Now I’m in your neck of the woods in Tennessee heading to the east coast and it’s beautiful here too. Enjoy the benefits of Death Valley. I really miss it.

Just plain fantastic as always. Bad luck on the jeep. Hopefully it's something simple. First thing I'd do is check the trans/clutch fluid levels. I can't remember if manual or auto. Autos can act up when voltage gets low. Wish I was there to help. Travel safe and thanks for the stickers!

You joke about fuel prices but I used to be able to fill the gas tank on my first car, a 1966 Rambler American, for less than $4. Now I can't even buy a gallon of gas for that. But on the flip side I was making $1.35 an hour at McDonalds so it's all relative. Keep the good stuff coming guys and give the kids a hug for me they're precious.

Many years ago, I drove through the Bonneville Salt Flats, a loooong, straight road. It was in the middle of the night while my husband slept. He woke up, astonished that I was so wide awake and commented on how boring the drive must’ve been with him snoozing. “No problem, honey! I just aimed the car on the road, put on cruise control and took a nap too!” He nearly had a heart attack for an instant until he realized that I’m not an idiot!🤣

Excellent photography! We were there in March. It was pretty warm but we didn't stay just drove thru to get to Lone Pine that night. Shoulda stayed there for a few nights though. Did stop for 10 g of gas @ $6.50 g then. Going up & down those long steep hills plays havoc on your mpg's. I wasn't sure what we'd be facing after that so erred on the side of safety.

When you are surrounded by mountains the sun sets before actual sunset time. I learned that the hard way too. Always fill up on gas before hitting the CA border, especially when you are going somewhere remote. When I was a kid I walked barefoot on the salt flats at bad water. Big huge mistake. My feet cracked and shriveled up. Imagine the early pioneers reaching that area and the excitement when they saw the puddle of water only to be disappointed that it wasn’t drinkable. Deserts are beautiful! Usually the green areas on the hills are good places to find fossils. I’m not sure if that’s true in Death Valley but it is in the Mojave. You guys should totally check out eastern Oregon as well.

We went through California for the first time in our life last fall. 2021. It was a wonderful experience to say the least, we came from the north and went south and east. The main goal we had was to see the redwood forest and the Sequoia national park which we did. My wife got to drive through the only drive through tree in the world, lol. We went to see the General Sherman Sequoia, but the forest fires in the area meant the park was closed, but the rangers were really cool and let us walk around the park entrance and collect some giant pine cones and hang out for a while.

Hensleys question, "Why is everything bad?" Really describes the distance in time between tourists and settlers. We go there in a car with food and water and airconditioning after driving a few hours. Settlers got there not knowing what was ahead of them and possibly at the end of their provisions after months of unimaginable hardship. The valley was truly death to many. And the water was bad. Not a fun story for kids, but something I think they need to know and appreciate at some age, since those that gave their lives finding a way to the west are in part why we're here.
